Amazon accuses customer of racism & shuts down their smart home

Not everyone has the same level of mobility that you do.
Incidentally, do you get off your arse to change the volume on your TV?

Which is the most satisfying IO connector system, in your opinion?
Magnets. (How do they work?)
I replaced all my USB-C and Micro-USB connectors with magnetic ones. No more orientation worries, no more fumbling in the dark, no more not-inserting-it-hard-enough. Just bring the two into proximity and them magically snap together.
Bliss.

Showoff sunday: what did you map or create with OpenStreetMap?
Six years ago today we launched https://openbenches.org/ - it is a crowdsourced map of memorial benches from around the world.
Uses OSM for displaying the maps and letting uploaders pick the exact right spot.
There's an API and data-dump so it can be incorporated into OSM - but our data isn't always as precise as needed. I'm still trying to work out a way to map an OSM bench ID to our ID.
If you're out mapping and spot a memorial bench, please do submit a geotagged photo to our site :-)

Did you know there’s no emoji for the cool S? Please add your name to this petition for change
You don't need a petition. You can just submit a proposal to Unicode.
I did it for https://unicodepowersymbol.com/
Seriously, these petition sites are just data harvesters.

Casual Sunday
I ate too much pizza yesterday and stayed up until 2am gaming.
I am going to spend today designing watch faces for my new eInk watch. This will be a challenge as I'm a terrible artist and an even worse C++ programmer.
Luckily ChatGPT is slightly better than me 😀

Saudi Arabia makes USB-C mandatory for electronic devices

All my gadgets use USB-C. Bluetooth headphones, eReader, laptop, printer, power bank, 360 camera, they all charge via USB-C.
Hell, even my neck cooler runs off it.

Killing Community
One underrated thing that keeps the village going is the police. Or, in our case, the mods.
I know, I know! Everyone hates the mods - with their over-inflated egos and unaccountable practices and their capricious banning of innocuous subjects.
But life without the mods means a village where rioters run rampant.

A good open source sms app?
Reply in thread
I also use Simple SMS. Works fine for text messaging - but I use Signal, Telegram, and WhatsApp for everything else.
It is excellent at extracting OTP codes for easy copying and pasting.

Sat in the garden having a burger for lunch. Still employed, so no al fresco beer - but I'll cope.

I think that's a lovely idea - which doesn't work in reality. At some point someone will need to be cast out. That can't be done by peer pressure, because scammers, spammers, and griefers don't care about that.
Individual blocks also don't work because they leave unaware users open to being abused.
Sure, you could have a town council vote on a block, or have software which blocks a user for all if they have been blocked >=N times, but that's still moderation.

Happy Monday, whats the craic?
Spent the weekend watching my wife grind through all the TOTK side quests.
Meanwhile I plowed through two ebooks.
Win for both of us!

If you are planning to put a memorial bench there - or anywhere - you can add it to our crowdsourced list at https://openbenches.org :-)

Do you use a separate knife for the Marmite?
I use the blade of the knife for the butter, and then use the handle of the knife for the marmite.
Foolproof!

Alternative to Google Pay
In the UK, you can use Curve. That gives you a physical or virtual card which proxies your existing Visa / MasterCards (not Amex).
But it doesn't have an NFC app you can use on Android. As far as I can tell, there are no other virtual NFC payment apps.
And, of course, it doesn't really improve your privacy posture. Your bank still knows who you spent with - as does Curve.
If you want a free fiver, you can use my Curve referral link - http://curve.app/join#D4MK9ZKN

How would using Silent.Link data-only plan affect my privacy?
There is no difference. You have a SIM with a unique ID. It connects to the network with that ID.
I suppose you could pay cash for a pre-pay SIM and then top it up by paying cash for vouchers. That would make it hard (but not impossible) to link you to the SIM.
But it depends on your threat model. From who are you trying to protect your privacy?

Whats a game that everybody seems to love that you cant stand for one reason or another?
That stupid Goose game. Pissed me off how simple and repetitive it was. Completed it in a few hours and felt like a total rip off. I still get angry when I see the memes.

I reverse-engineered all Timex Datalink watches and devices, the Notebook Adapter, and the CRT graphics in Ruby!
OMG! I still have my DataLink watch somewhere. I remember thinking it was amazing and showing off all the phone numbers I'd programmed into it.
Will your code work with any flashing LED? Or does it need special hardware?

mindustry?
Yes! I finished the original one. Slowly working my way through the new campaigns. Great on Android.
I also built this very silly schematic for turning scrap into EVERYTHING! https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2022/02/mindustry-scrap-to-everything-schematic/
