I have completed an entire month of self care and being sensible. The biggest reward for this is that I haven't thrown up in a month, but one of my goals had a specific reward - if I don't have an alcoholic drink for 1 month I can reward myself with Sky Sports Cricket, for the Ashes. I only went and did it!
48 hr blackout passed and no commitments from Reddit = I finally braved-up and deleted my post history, my comment history, and my account. Feeling liberated.
I'm almost done building my first web site! I had almost no technical know-how prior to this, but I'm also beginning with JavaScript at the same time. It's not amazing but I've learned so much. It's immensely rewarding. While that probably is kiddie pool stuff to others even my junior, I'm really proud.
That's awesome! I got my start just from self-teaching how to make a basic website then going from there, it's a fun hobby in its own right but also a super marketable skill if you decide to take it further. Would love to see what you make, if you ever fancy sharing it DM me :)
I deffo will! :) I've thought about what it would be like doing this professionally, but that would be a ways away. For now, I just like making things!
Kids are off to school and I'm sitting in the sunny back garden listening to trains and having a fantastic homemade espresso. Perfect. All downhill from here.
I bought an air purifier to deal with the pollens - seeing as I had my first asthma-like symptoms ever the night before last - and I could not be more excited for it to arrive.
I popped over to the site that shall not be named for a look, and was dissappointed to see so much of it was back open, with users posting away. But well done CasualUK for sticking it out.
Good on them to have stuck to their principles. For what it's worth I messaged the mods over there asking them nicely to give us a link here. You can only ask.
I've felt pretty good this week mental health wise, so I'm taking that as a win. Glad the sunshine is finally upon us, even if it does turn the country into a special kind of sweaty hell. It's our sweaty hell.
I sympathise on the mental health front. I've had my own struggles for a long while, but today has been a good week relatively speaking like yours. I hope you keep up the good fight, and enjoy the sweaty hell :)
Yeah, I run a Mastodon instance for the my city. It only has double digits of active users but that suits me because it's not too expensive to run and I want to prioritse the user experience over growth for growth's sake. I'd like to do the same thing with this Lemmy instance.
I think it's one of the real strengths of the fediverse that you can be on a tiny, friendly instance and still play a part in a huge community.
I'm new to all this. Would you be able to explain the benefits of having your own instance? How does that work with regards to federations?
Any info would be much appreciated 👍
I think the power of the fediverse is in there being more, smaller servers. It makes moderation easier and should scale better. It prevents one person or group getting control over the whole network.
The advantages of having your own server are about having control over the instance. I can choose which servers I do it don't federate with. Also I know my data isn't being misused. Plus, to be honest, I've got lots of experience running this sort of thing and I like the idea of offering the benefits of that to the community.
In my case I decided to base my Mastodon server and Lemmy server on my local area. I like the idea that the local timelines and local posts would be relevant for that geographic community.
Running your own server isn't for everyone though. It takes a certain amount of commitment and money. I get some donations - which are lovely - but I'm still basically funding it out of my own pocket.
Building a garage. Concrete pour went well, which is what I was stressing the most about. Not I'm just gradually laying blocks on evening and lunchtimes. It's exhausting doing a day's work then cooking, then spending hours building walls - but it's very rewarding seeing it slowly turn into a garage.
6 day weekend for me starting tomorrow with a three night stay at Center Parcs. Excited for it as my son is a little older this time we visit so he might enjoy more of it.
Planning to buy a house next year, it's much cheaper over there. I also believe it'll provide the most long term value, While sticking around cardiff provides enough job security.
I've barely stopped all day as it's monthly reporting time but this is the first time I've managed to produce the 4 different reports in time on my own, so I'm calling that a win. Going to see Sigur Ros on Friday so that will be my treat for not having a breakdown
Procrastinated finishing off an annoying work project and now it's due today, but I've made good progress this morning so shall hopefully be back later to report in that I actually managed to get it done. Fingers crossed!
Just got back from a bottom-to-top tour of your lovely country in preparation for my only child applying to post-grad university programs. Every place had its beauty, but we all kind of fell in love with Aberdeen. I feel pretty good about leaving her in your hands next year.
Its Thursday now, but my friendica instance has just synced this one post and a single comment from this community. I dont know what it causing everything else not to work though
I've had a successful week soo far! Got through huge amounts of work today considering my workload and the heat. Got a nice drive down south tomorrow. The Mrs is going to Ghana for University placement for 3 weeks! House to myself until she returns! Soo many things to do, the possibilities are endless! (I'll probably just browse Lemmy and binge TV 😂)
Absolutely worthy of posting in the Wednesday thread on a Friday lol, that's awesome well done! Presenting is hard at the best of times so seriously, congrats.
I won a small victory in Sainsbury's today. There were no checkouts open and a gaggle of shop assistants just standing around chatting. I dislike using the self service so I stood by a checkout and glared meaningfully at the assistants until one backed down and opened the checkout.

Well done you. Take my updoot (do we call them updoots on here?).
Call them whatever the heck you like 🙂
Nice one! Be proud of yourself and enjoy the cricket. Hope you can continue on this positive path.
Congratulations that's amazing work!

Nice! Welcome to the party
Got a verbal offer of a new job last night. Hopefully today I'll receive the contract, then I can hand my notice in!
Congratulations. What's the new job?
CEO of Reddit
Maybe a pilot?

Also, jam on toast for breakfast.
Jam on toast or jam on toast tea?
What's your thinking there? Are you getting hay-fever symptoms just from being inside? That's brutal.
7 months of the year, baby!
Having a post work pint in the sun. Its actually heaven after being ill for the last month
Glad you're feeling better! Being ill in the heat is horrendous, glad you can enjoy yourself a bit
Logged on to casualuk just try and promote Lemmy and this community but it's now read only.
Part of me thinks it's a shame and the other part is happy they just haven't returned to normal.
I popped over to the site that shall not be named for a look, and was dissappointed to see so much of it was back open, with users posting away. But well done CasualUK for sticking it out.

Ah cheers
I was thinking of doing the same thing. Probably by far the sub I will miss the most and was hoping to migrate to lemmy

I'm very glad to hear you're having a good week too, we gotta try and roll with the punches.
A cheeky mid-week day off work and a fat lie-in for me. I'm 100% content at doing nothing of value today just enjoying the summer vibes.
I just set up a Lemmy site and am basically posting here to try out how federation works! Other than that... stressy meeting-filled work week!
Well at least this posting thing worked out ok for you 👍

I’m wondering if I can move my bed into the office, can’t sleep in this hot weather, but the air con here is amazing

Welp, as the UK economically struggles, I've never been so economically stable. Seems like opposite day. Getting ready to move to Wales.
That's my secret cap, I'm always winning.
Nice one! Why the move to Wales if you don't mind me asking?
Planning to buy a house next year, it's much cheaper over there. I also believe it'll provide the most long term value, While sticking around cardiff provides enough job security.
Awesome, hope things go well and the move isnae too painful!
Thank you 🙏
Cardiff is lovely, we lived in the Bay for 18 months and it was great. Best flat I've ever rented.
Very nice! Ive only heard good things about the bay area. What made you move?
Wanted to be closer to family and work on the other side of the water. At the time I was driving over the bridge three times a week.
My week has been absolute shit so far, but my dog has been very well-behaved which helps my stress ease up.
Going onto nightshift tomorrow so making the best of the weather, garden, book and a homemade frappacino.
Smoked a J and resisted the munchies tonight. Might seem small but a big win for me as I am about 20 lbs overweight
Sat in the garden having a burger for lunch. Still employed, so no al fresco beer - but I'll cope.

Hopefully being able to post and comment across instances!
Edit: that’s worked so now we’re cooking!
I've noticed some issues with that too, hopefully fixed now!
Edit: same here too!
Test comment, curious to see whether I can commwnt on lemmy world
Nope, nothing to see here.
I had to take my cat to the vet for an ingrown claw. They managed to remove it and she is recovering really well
Procrastinated finishing off an annoying work project and now it's due today, but I've made good progress this morning so shall hopefully be back later to report in that I actually managed to get it done. Fingers crossed!
Update to this, yeah, nah 😎
Good update!

I got the job I wanted! It's nothing special. I am just happy to feel useful again!
Also have plans to work towards so overall I feel a lot happier!
Awesome, well done :-)
where is the goal? jk dc
I completed a huge work project on my own, and presented it as a panelist at a summit in front of a bunch of people twice my age and salary.
I absolutely crushed it!!
