Washington wants your 3D printer to spy on you - here's the bill

So reading the commentary in the first link, if you flash your printer with new GPL firmware that bypasses these restrictions, you're now in violation.

And what if I move (back) to WA with my printer purchased out of state that I've already modded?

I see what they're trying to do, make ghost gun production illegal, but turning makers into criminals for flashing their printers with new firmware seems the wrong way.

Is there really no viable alternative for Photoshop on Linux?

Reply in thread

If you want to use gimp as an ALTERNATIVE and go in without the bias, you’ll likely learn your way around a LOT faster.

I think this is the key phrase -- do you want an alternative (where you might have to learn new ways of doing things), or do you want a clone? GIMP is not a clone, but an alternative.

I also think this gets to something I was told loooooooooong ago, when I was a young lad asking what was the best computer to buy. Someone told me, "Find all the software you want/need to run, and get the computer that will run it all."

In other words, if you need to use Photoshop, then maybe you don't use Linux -- maybe stick with Mac or (shudder) Windows.

Avoid over-commenting in Python

Meh.

I'll agree, docstrings are better for documenting a function than just a comment.

However, the author seems to jump through hoops in the next example to break one function into four, just to avoid some single line comments. Unless those code blocks make sense as functions (they're used/duplicated elsewhere), you're just making work for yourself. Why not turn it into 12 functions? One for each line of code?

I'm reminded of the admonition that there are only two hard problems^*^ in computer science -- cache invalidation, and naming things. The more functions you have, the more things you have to name.

The rest of it -- name your magic numbers, use tuple unpacking, comment "why" instead of "what" -- is good practice. I'm just not a fan of making functions just to avoid writing a comment.

^*^ And off by one errors.

Study shows many American atheists hide their non-belief

I had this same experience when I moved from Seattle to rural Iliinois a few years ago. Two of my neighbors invited me to their church, and another neighbor is a church. Luckily, my MIL who lived here (and is the reason we moved here) was a member of a different church, so I could beg off by mentioning that and avoid the whole atheism discussion completely.

To this day, I've never mentioned it to any of my neighbors.

In the winter, I wear an atheist pin on my coat, and I have a science-y t-shirt I wear occasionally. I've gotten some looks, but no obvious confrontations. Compared to the ubiquitous religious-wear I see everywhere, I'm actually surprised by that - I would have expected by now to have been accused of persecuting the Xtians with my brazen display of heresy.
