What's the worst present you've ever received?

My mom's boyfriend got me this huge present that just fit under the tree that was pretty heavy. I racked my brain trying to figure out what it was, had no idea. Got to be honest i was a little hyped up to open this thing, even though my opinion of the boyfriend was average

Christmas day I finally get to find out what it is. open the box and it was a Microwave; a second hand microwave. He had replaced his, wasn't even a good microwave (5 minutes to boil a cup of water) Mom already had a microwave and i was 14 years old.

Final Report on Loss of HMNZS Manawanui | Timeline of Grounding, Abandonment and Sinking

Reply in thread

The main thing covered is the actual chain of events from the "black box" (my word for it) transcribed from the voice recordings from the report. Basically there was a lack of training, the crew didn't figure out that the ship was still on autopilot until it was way too late.

The Crew had control of the throttle but not control of the helm direction. So when the crew thought they were doing a full reverse they were actually making the problem worse. The crew went up to 100% throttle because they thought they had changed helm direction but in reality they we're just getting to the reef quicker because autopilot still was in control of the direction of the ship.

They didn't follow procedure didn't check if the autopilot was off and didn't discover this until after they had hit the reef. There is way more detail then that but basically that is the TLDR.

Beautiful, isolated and expensive: US expats on life in New Zealand

The Americans who moved to NZ before COVID and haven't visited the US in awhile, may not appreciate how much prices have gone up there.

Prices in NZ have gone up, but in % terms a lot of other countries prices have gone up more %wise.

Other countries prices started lower then NZ prices but the pricing is now closer then it ever has been.

Although I would prefer if everyone's prices went down rather then all of us paying a Kings Ransom for groceries.

Why do the majority of women still take their partner's last name?

After we were married wife kept her last name, partially for professional reasons partially because she didn't like my last name :-) When we had kids we decided that the kids would have my last name to avoid hyphen hell and her last name is super generic so any time she has to search for an account at the bank or anything like that she almost always has someone else with the same first and last name it can be a pain to find the correct "her"

My longest was when i went 100% Full time on my main machine (no dual boot), I stopped distro-hoppping. I Installed Debian stable when it first came out (Jessie) and stayed with it until it shifted to "old-stable" which was a little bit over 3 years.

A lot of people give Debian stable a hard time but i found it worked well. Most software that i needed to be a little bit newer i could get from the backports repository. It was only at the end of it's lifecycle that i noticed started running in to software being a little to old for what i wanted to do. Then i went back to distro-hopping for a while until i found my next home. :-)

After opposing climate action for decades, Federated Farmers wants the govt to foot the bill for storm-damaged roads to their farms

Not throwing shade here, but i don't know a single person (farmer or not) in a disaster situation that would not want the government to fix the roads, maybe a road is not fixable... but if i had a apartment, house, cottage, batch, farm at the end of a road i would like the council/government to fix the road to my place, if they couldn't that would be a big deal and i would be unhappy. The individuals affected by this may have supported or opposed climate action, it doesn't change their current situation that they are still in.

Why not spend $2.7b on solar & batteries instead?

This makes me furious that they can do this without a cost comparison of the other options on the market (renewable and non-renewable)

I could live with this if I knew they had compared all the options on the table showed their math and they gave some solid reasons for this choice; But they did none of this. At best commercial users will get their power price a bit more predictable. Residential users will be paying the “levy” so commercial users have more certainty about power cost.

I won’t start on how we are 100% reliant on offshore companies to supply LNG.

"All" button not working from lemmy.nz homepage, Android.

first things first i really appreciate the effort. going to be honest i wasn't really expecting a response. to answer you questions.

  • I only had bromite installed so i tried some other lemmy instances to test, but not another browser. I did check it on the desktop as well (which worked fine).
  • i use f-droid to install most software on Android.
  • i had recently re-installed my phone and assumed everything was up to date.. i guess it was, doesn't help when the repo hasn't been updated in 2 years.
  • i just learned that bromite's main developer got bored and basically left. so yes, i was using a 2 year old browser 😳

So i installed Cromite and Firefox and all works well. I do appreciate having the lemmy.nz instance so thank you. and apologies if i created any work for you.
