Walmart exec: ‘I’ve never believed in the term work-life balance’—this is the mantra that made her highly successful instead

Reply in thread

you've clearly never had the sort of job she's talking about.

I have. These people act like "sending a text outside of work hours to a boss" is such a heavy lift, while their time in the office is often spent just throwing wrenches into already working machinery.

What is a "new exciting service" that Walmart has provided? Nothing. All this woman does is spend time in meetings with other execs trying to figure out ways to increase their bottom line (read: bonuses) and pass the work of doing that off on people who then have to handle the weight of making these ideas of theirs a reality.

As others have said, the C-suite is the most replaceable use-case for AI. Just people that throw shit at the wall and see what sticks.

Apparently Canadians are notorius cheaters in the sport of Curling

Reply in thread

I've been watching the curling through these Olympics, and after this was done there were reports that other nations teams also have claimed to have done this before, and that they don't think it requires extreme policing like the Swedish team suggested. The latter half of their argument led me to believe it happens a lot more than we knew before this incident and they'd rather this not become a constant issue. Sounds like the Swedish team has been trying to accuse the Canadian team of this for a few years now, and have gotten a reputation internationally about it as sore losers.

So it's only "what the Canadian team is known for" because of the swearing response, and the fact it was broadcast everywhere after Swedish media blew up about it, and why they only had umpires watching as of the next day. It seems like the rest of the world doesn't care about this, and is more upset about the aggressive response (which I think everyone can agree with)

no borders

Reply in thread

Counterpoint, Europe has its own borders and you can't cross those if you're not from inside of the EU. And even that is a specific subset of EU countries.

Akin to inter-provincial/across state line travel. I think a lot of people outside of Europe just view it the same as a provincial setup.

Canadians say U.S. no longer an ally, is bigger threat than Russia: poll

Reply in thread

All of their points were very true and have absolutely been considered by all Canadians lately. Some feel more strongly than others, but a lot have expressed their hatred towards the US.

Russia never made targeted threats at our sovereignty. The US has been doing nothing but that for over a year now.

If you want to use an LLM and waste a bunch of energy to respond to someone making a valid point, go for it, just kind of ends up being another reminder of how ignorant Americans can be to anything they don't have the capacity to understand.

The final NDP Leadership debate is tonight - Feb 19 5pm PT, 8pm ET - Link to RSVP

I was hopeful for Rob at first but starting his candidacy with an AI AMA on Reddit was a bad look. They even hit him on that point at the end of the debate.

He also didn't much charisma on the stage. I guess I understand why he had his helpers do the AMA with AI, because he had to keep looking at his notes last night, and it makes me wonder how much he believes and how much he's just parroting.

I actually do this

I often say "that number again is," but I had to find someone in here that knows how to do it right. First number let's them know you're hitting them with the deets. The second pause is crucial. Gives them the chance to write down the first numbers before having to remember the last ones.

now hoarding

I believe it's a matter of time until people start becoming radicalized enough to attack billionaire assets like Yachts. I was reading the ministry for the future and a section of the book dives into the possibilities of average citizens making drones to take out things like their private jets.

With something like a yacht, it's stationed in the middle of the water with very little in the line of defences. You'd have to imagine they must have something to handle torpedos or underwater drones, but if the armies are having trouble with anti-UAV technologies, why would anyone expect a yacht to have one?

BUT I'm not sure I'm comfortable opening Jellyfin to the internet, even behind nginx, and I don't want to have to spend time setting things up for them or troubleshooting their issues w/ Jellyfin. I put enough labor into this thing already.

This is still where I'm at too. It's a great service, but the fear of messing something up when opening it up to the internet is too worrying. I'm usually pretty good picking up new tech with easier setups, but when there are 4 different networking techniques with their own pros and cons, at that point it's just easier to just run as a local service.
