The decline of sex in films
as an asexual person i find other people's opinions on this interesting. the sex scenes do nothing for me and i'm usually just waiting for them to end but i understand my circumstances are not common. i can only assume that someone who is into sex gets something out of sex scenes, otherwise they wouldn't exist.
what i don't understand is the demonizing of sex scenes in movies. like does everyone only watch movies with their parents/kids? i don't like sex scenes due to my asexuality and i'm glad that there are few of them because this cultural shift benefits me specifically (who has never been in the target demographic) in a roundabout way. but i wouldn't say they are all gross/unnecessary/graphic/etc as a blanket statement like i see people in this thread and other places online say. art doesn't need to be for everyone.

not so much that they like to be used by companies, but that they don't care enough to change or learn how to stop it. for most people, the idea of giving up their favorite online service because of ads or whatever other predatory anti consumer shit it implements is a little extreme.
as long as it works, the vast majority of people who are not tech-literate will just use it regardless.

i wouldn't trust a company who would enable this by default to allow users to TRULY completely disable it. much like how you can only opt out of the telemetry options they allow you to.

We can't even talk in this community dedicated to vegans without someone coming along and meatsplaining.
yeah the hardest part of being vegan is interacting with non vegans. gotta love how the default response to veganism (you know that thing we do to try to better the planet and animal rights and shit) is to argue as if doing something about the issues you care about is a negative trait.
mfs always got something to say and love attacking a thing that as far as i'm aware is proven to be better for personal health, the environment, your wallet, and animals.

Knowledge
been battling impostor syndrome for my whole career, and today i learned that one of the new (not new to the field) people on my team doesn't know how to use excel, the thing i spend like 50% of my working hours using.
worrying for my team and maybe the industry, but very comforting personally lol

😂 Elon Musk just crawled from under a rock and discovered something that has been bothering people for years. It is just too funny not to share this one.
local man who wants to own the internet experiences what that would be like for users, doesn’t like it, learns nothing. more at 11

Binary search
Reply in thread
not the commenter you asked but i use a binary search when i'm playing a modded game that is having issues to pinpoint which mod(s) cause the issue. beats launching the game over and over to test each mod by a long shot.
a recent example: i put together a mod list for risk of rain 2 to play with some friends, but the game crashed on launch when all the mods were installed. so i disabled half the mods (in order, alphabetically or other) and tried to launch the game again - still crashing. disabled half the remaining enabled mods, test, repeated as necessary. with only a few cycles of booting the game, i was able to determine the specific mod causing a crash on startup out of my list of 50 something mods.

What’s something on your mind lately that nobody else would understand?
why doesn't Radiohead put out an entire album of songs like pulk/pull revolving doors? they had a really unique and cohesive idm sound going and kinda dropped it to the side

Trump says he ‘shouldn’t have left’ the White House as he closes campaign with increasingly dark message
“Arnold Palmer was all man, and I say that in all due respect to women, I love women,” Trump said. “This man was strong and tough, and I refused to say it, but when he took showers with the other pros they came out of there, they said, ‘Oh, my God. That’s unbelievable.’”

this is the correct response.
get it in writing that they accept the risk that comes with not upgrading so it can't come back on you. all you can do is CYA and make recommendations - if management does not agree with your recommendations make sure you have it documented that you informed whoever is making the decision of the risk.
if you think your employer will somehow still try to hold you accountable for this, save the aforementioned correspondence using something your employer does not manage i.e. a personal device. you could also let other people than this specific individual know about this so it isn't just your word vs his.

it's important to mention wherever that incorrect point is brought up:
the only reason people say there are no viruses on linux (which is wrong from the get go) is because there just isn't enough market share for lots of malware to be written and distributed with a linux target in mind. it is out there and it is a risk, just much rarer than windows malware. if more people start using linux, user-targeted linux malware in the wild will likely become just as common (and effective) as the stuff targeting windows.
never assume your system is safe by default and requires no hardening or awareness from the user/org.

you can't honestly be saying that there are no issues with hosting documentation/support for a project exclusively on discord as opposed to a classic forum or wiki.
even ignoring the issues that you are dismissing (and would not exist on a better suited platform), the people using the discord server do not own it. discord servers have no backup functionality. what happens when an admin goes rogue or gets hacked etc? what happens when people get tired of discord for the next chat app?
you shouldn't have to use a burner email to download a videogame mod or view documentation for an open source project.

Fallout London's project lead is not taking the surprise drop of Fallout 4's update well: 'That has, for a lack of a better term, screwed us over'

but this is a game that basically lives and dies by its mods, and this is an update that (arguably) changed nothing anyone who is still playing the game cares about after years of stability. why fix what isn't broken?
