Proton 2024 Lifetime account fundraiser for online freedom | Ends on January 5th

I remember one time I criticized proton for positioning itself as community oriented while still being a for-profit corporation. I pointed out that as long as it’s a for-profit corporation, it would have not have any financial or legal incentive to continue pursuing its mission if it ever achieved a certain level of market share. But then several months later, they actually announced that they were going to put their money where their mouth is, and transition to a nonprofit structure.

I think that proton is perhaps the greatest example at the moment that to oppose capitalism does not mean you have to be opposed to free enterprise, and people should always think about this sort of thing when they listen to any kind of business leader try to convince them that it’s actually really important that they be allowed to cash out whenever they want.

I can’t imagine that their set up is perfect, but I definitely am going to have to give this offer serious consideration.

OpenAI to remove non-profit control and give Sam Altman equity

When you organize a nonprofit, you dedicate it to the public benefit. it’s not supposed to ever have owners, everything it does it supposed to be for me and you. as far as I’m concerned, this is a multi billion dollar larceny against the general public and we really need better laws that preserve our nonprofit institutions. Just even trying to plan this out is a crime against humanity

In regard to Hyprland and Fascism

I think it’s really funny how in proprietary software, if you download stuff without asking, you’re presumed to have economically harmed a business. But in free and open source software, if you download stuff without asking, you’re presumed to have economically benefited the random individual that made the project.

is there any particular reason you’re saying that besides cynicism? I am having trouble finding specifics, but there’s a lot of reporting that the MTA is expecting to raise $15 billion from congestion tolling to fund public transportation repairs and improvements and pretty much all of the proposals for this in the past required all of the revenues to be earmarked for use by the MTA

Fox News’ host Brian Kilmeade says ‘just kill ‘em’ about mentally ill homeless people

Fox & Friends co-host Brian Kilmeade endorsed euthanizing unhoused people suffering from mental health issues who decline getting help.

Why do journalists do this sort of thing where a guy will literally say that we should murder homeless people and then they try to dress down their language to the point of dishonesty? Euthanasia is when you help something die that is in horrible unyielding pain. Not when you kill something because you don’t know how to take care of it.

$25 million UnitedHealth CEO whines about social media trashing his industry

Never forget that when a business owner tells you that they put consumers first, nothing is stopping them from converting their business into either a cooperative or a nonprofit organization dedicated to the public benefit. Even if it’s the case that at some given moment, the business really is putting consumers first, there is no benefit to the consumer for the business to continue operating as a privately owned for-profit institution. The only benefit a for-profit institution provides that a cooperative or nonprofit cannot, is the power for leadership to prioritize their own interests above all other stakeholders whenever it suits them.

America is in danger of experiencing an academic brain drain

I think at this point, the danger has crystallized pretty thoroughly. Even if you somehow stopped everything that was currently happening, I don’t really know why anybody would want to come here anymore for university. Getting a degree is already stressful enough without having to worry about whether or not the institution will legally be allowed to keep you enrolled for the entire duration of your program.

Stocks and your 401(k) may surge now that Fed rate hikes seem to be over, history shows

Don’t forget that when someone is talking about the average American “owning stocks” what they really mean is “has a retirement account that works in a way they don’t fully understand, which includes securities such as stocks, that they are not legally allowed to touch until they are 60”.

Anyone who tries to insinuate that the way average Americans “own stocks” is in any manner comparable to the way the wealthiest do, should honestly literally be put in the stocks where commoners can hurl tomatoes at them.

Musk’s X posts on ketamine, Putin spur release of his security clearances

Any regular person who needs security clearance for work feels like they are walking on eggshells if they smoked weed in the past two years when they apply for it and are technically committing a federal crime if they haven’t abstained from basically everything besides nicotine and alcohol. Elon Musk getting TS while talking about recreational drug use on twitter, he might as well be rubbing his penis on the face of every American, but this country is so cucked every citizen might as well be begging for the next turn.

Modern Stoic Philosophy

This is a funny comic, but I dislike how it perpetuates a common misunderstanding of stoicism that it’s about suppressing or ignoring your feelings, when it’s actually about engaging with your feelings as deeply, mindfully, and intentionally as possible. It’s about trying to understand why you feel the way you do, and also trying to understand how your feelings can lead you to acting in a manner which contradicts your values. A stoic master wouldn’t ignore their anger, especially if their anger is the result of witnessing their own teachings being misrepresented and used to further injustice. They would just be careful not to let their anger lead them to acting rashly and doing something which will ultimately undermine the virtues they want to cultivate in themselves and in the world.
