+1 to everything you said. Another funny thing I noticed: I looked at my steam catalog on a family member’s Macbook. Many of the games aren’t available on Mac, plus they dropped 32 bit executable support.

I never thought that only ~15 years later (from when I first tried Linux) we would start booting into linux from a mainstream OS for gaming. How the times have changed.

I may have missed it, but does he (or anyone else) have recommendations for options to simply pay for content and get high quality DRM free files (edit: I mean legally)?

And how much of a pain in the ass is it to buy DVD box sets and rip them? Presumably that’s legal for personal use? Is that the only way? :(

I have some additional frustrations with Netflix:

• they have removed some shows that I like
• if you travel to another country, you can’t always watch the same shows— even if you downloaded them within the app
• they completely remove some episodes: the episode of community where they play Dungeons and Dragons, and (other streaming services) remove the Michael Jackson Simpsons episode.
• extremely user hostile way to browse content. They always move your list around and show the same show in multiple places
• I absolutely hate how all these streaming services auto play to the next episode. You can often change this behaviour. But my partner sometimes casts it to our TV and the damn app (Disney+ in this case, I think) changes the interface just as you get to the credits. I want to sit in peace and let the credits play, and discuss the episode. But it tries to shove another one down your throat, presumably to “maximize engagement”. (I get it for content that you’re binging or are re watching. But this is horrible if you’re just watching an episode during dinner and don’t want to have to scramble to stop the autoplay as soon as it ends)

I couldn’t understand why this would be anything besides good news, but I guess they’re worried that the hardware won’t get as much focus?

(I’m out of the loop, I play PC games now and haven’t bought a console since the Xbox 360 back in… 2008 or so? I forget)

It still seems like an over reaction to me. Exclusives have always seemed bad. I’m just glad games are getting released on PC, though I haven’t played many AAA games in a while.

This would have been so exciting like 9 years ago when they first released the FPS thing. I would also be excited if they said the game is fun now, instead of some random superficial animation thing that probably doesn’t add much to the gameplay.

I love the idea of this game, but even after a few years I lost hope. I can’t believe it’s still in development like 10 years later. Does anyone know if it’s more playable now? They had some ship racing and the FPS thing before, why haven’t they just thrown together a basic world yet?

Edit: it sounds like they have thrown together a basic world. Maybe it’s worth another try now? Can you have fun for more than a few hours and actually accomplish meaningful stuff?

I already basically get that half the time I boot into windows after an update. They say “let’s finish setting up your PC” and try to get you to pay for one drive, office, even game pass.

I’m so glad gaming on Linux has gotten to such a good state. I barely ever boot into windows now. (The “ad” on boot up is probably only once every few months, but that’s about as often as I boot into windows).

Has anyone compared this to a PinePhone?

I bought a PinePhone and it works great as a mini laptop to do light programming. But as a phone I don’t think I could trust it, and the interface seemed to need some work. It was cool (though awkward to control) running full desktop apps like VLC though.

Perhaps I should have tried a different OS though. I couldn’t tell how much of it was software vs hardware limitations.

Also pre boiling the water helps. I used to find it tasted burnt, but now I like it.

Aeropress is less of a hassle to clean, but I do like the taste of moka pot coffee when I have time. Chemex (pourover) is for my daily cup though.

A thousand times, yes. I love Factorio and want to get my partner into it, but she finds the logistics tedious and doesn’t like the gritty art style. We love Cities Skylines (the original, I haven’t tried this new one yet). There aren’t enough city builders (or games focused on building and without much combat) that have good multiplayer.

Does anyone have any recommendations for that? We loved Stardew Valley but I want something with more building. The multiplayer mod for Rimworld works pretty well. I considered vanilla Minecraft but it seems like the buildings don’t feel important enough without mods like FTB.

OpenTTD seems like it should be exactly what we want (also it’s free! And runs on weak hardware, and mobile), but maybe we were playing it wrong. Airports seem to give way too much easy money. And when we first played through we only made transportation for passengers, and I think we should have focused more on industry. I tried it again myself later and did better after focusing on industry, but it still seemed like airports were better money (and way easier).

I’d be interested to hear any recommendations for how to easily access my UPnP server from outside my network from my phone. I’m sure there’s some way to do it with a VPN, but I’d rather only route the media streaming traffic through my home network, not all my phone’s traffic.

Does anyone know why they don’t have a headphone jack?

The fact that even they don’t include one actually makes me respect the existing phone manufacturers a lot more. I always assumed that Apple did it to sell airpods, and then the others did it just to copy Apple or sell their own dongles/headphones.

But if even an organization like this chose not to include one, then maybe not including it really does make the phone a lot smaller or cheaper or waterproof or whatever.

That being said, I can’t believe cars don’t have aux ports anymore. Surely the cost and size isn’t significant on that scale.

Disclaimer: both for cars and my phone, I’m generally happy with Bluetooth. But I want the option to use a headphone jack without needing to buy or remember a dongle. My first phone was this “dual flip” Samsung U740 (I don’t remember the model number, I just looked up “dual flip”). It could be used like a normal phone when talking, but you could also open it sideways to text and use a QWERTY keyboard. I could easily text without looking, I loved it.

After that I had some moto droid with a slide out keyboard, but it was bigger and less comfortable to use.

I find that stove top popcorn is even less convenient (so less tempting to eat all the time), but much cheaper, and maybe tastier in some ways.

Get a ~500 g (1 lb or so?) bag of whole kernels for $3-ish, some oil that you use for cooking other stuff anyway, and salt. Heat the oil on the stove with a few kernels, then when those pop, briefly remove from heat and add more. Make sure the pot has a lid. Keep shaking it side to side to keep the popcorn from burning.

I find it adds just enough oil to taste good, but not so much that I’m eating something super awful for me. (And it’s much tastier than air popped). And I assume you could still add melted butter if you want an extra treat.

I want to get one of those movie theatre style things where the popcorn can fly out of the pot.

What do you recommend? I love LibreOffice on Windows and Linux, and it still works well on macOS but the GUI seems weird on it, the buttons are really large. I still use it but my partner is put off by it.

I don’t think it’s only you. I remember him saying (and even tweeting) that 2015 will be the last FPTP election if the liberals were elected. I was younger at the time but I remember a lot of people reluctantly voted for him instead of the NDP just to finally end FPTP and be able to choose the NDP as their first choice in the next election (but still choose the liberals as their second choice, to keep the conservatives out). My problem may be related: how do you find people to follow? I wish I could just follow communities like on Lemmy. I’ve tried following hastags I’m interested in, but it seems like they aren’t always used.

I’ve instead searched for topics that I’m interested in, followed a bunch of people, then unfollowed the ones that post too much stuff I’m not interested in. But this seems like a pain.

I also don’t necessarily want to see everything that a single person posts.

What sort of numbers are people expecting for this? I read somewhere that the NDP proposed a tax of 1-2% on assets above $10M, does that sound right?

That being said, I’ve only played the base game so far, and I think I’ve always played on the difficulty that is just one above peaceful, and I found it really hard near the end. But I’ve never bothered with killboxes, and I keep my colony wealth high I guess, I like to hoard food, silver, and everything. I also build floors (some people skip them to keep their wealth low). Perhaps I should have added: raid strength depends on your colony wealth (I think).

hi, I haven't used your project, but I saw this thread linked elsewhere, read it, and I just wanted to express two things:

I agree with a lot of what you've said about people on Lemmy. It's sad, it really seemed promising a few years ago. There are still some good people it seems, but I feel like there is a large (but diminishing) silent majority of people who, like me, don't want to bother engaging because of the people who are too extreme. If you (or anyone else) is aware of some community that is a bit better in this respect, I'd be very interested in joining. (Mostly to lurk and read comments, but perhaps to participate when I have something to add).

Also I wanted to say how sad it is that you can put a ton of work into something and eventually have the community let you down. It's hard enough to build anything, let alone something that becomes popular, and I can't imagine how disappointing it is to still have to deal with a toxic community despite contributing like that.

If you have an RSS feed or mastodon account or something then you should let me know, I'd be interested in following it to see what you develop next, or if you have something you want to share. In addition to the technical side, it seems like you have a lot of valuable insight on what is needed to keep a community from going downhill like Lemmy has.

Aside: I started dumping some thoughts on how to make moderation more flexible, allowing more people to report obviously bad stuff, but also maybe having different "moderation lists" that people can contribute to, to reduce the visibility of (but not necessarily hide entirely) more aggressive comments. If the moderators of these lists seem to become too extreme, users can always find a different list, and instance/community admins/moderators could choose different ones to apply by default. Maybe these lists could be made up of smaller groups of people (to keep each other accountable) and peer together to form larger groups, but the others could vote for or against including other groups.

I realize this probably isn't the right place to ask this sort of question (apologies, you probably just want a break from all of this)... so I'd be happy to be pointed towards somewhere where people discuss this sort of thing.

I don't have any experience with this stuff at all, but I've often wondered about different technical solutions for content moderation that could make everyone happy. Is there any way to have co-existing moderation philosophies? Some way to allow some people to filter out kinds of content that they don't enjoy, leveraging community contributions to different "moderation lists" that people can choose to opt-in to (and possibly opt-out from). Maybe some of these lists wouldn't hide the content completely but simply push it down into a less visible area, or hide it behind a "too aggressive" button that you can only press if you are interested and in the mood to read comments like that. Then if you feel the comment is reasonable, you can choose to apply different moderation lists that better align with your own feelings, or possibly some sort of "I think this comment was incorrectly tagged, people may be misusing this moderation list". Maybe people who don't administer these lists can have those sorts of reports highlighted, so they can re-consider whether or not they agree with the moderators of that list. But worst case if you disagree with their philosophy, you can just find a different list to use to filter the comments you see.

This might help take some of the moderation burden off of instance admins, and also allow for a greater spectrum of people to be able to co-exist on the same platform. The instance admin could simply choose what groups of people they trust as sort of default moderators, and users could even adjust that somewhat if they disagree. I don't think I could handle the full burden of being a moderator, but I wouldn't mind occasionally reporting content that I feel is overly hostile or rude, or even unreasonable (though this would be a different list). And I would be okay with my submissions to that list being reviewed by others and perhaps gradually being given more permission, but at the risk of having that permission taken away if I abuse it, perhaps with the chance of being steered in the right direction by a more senior moderator (e.g. use list "aggressive" rather than list "flag for removal"). Also perhaps my submissions to these lists don't have any effect unless some other number of users agree or make the same submission.

Ideally people would be aware of these lists, and try to be more polite and civil if they really want to engage with many different people and try to change their minds. If they (sometimes) just want to rant and be aggressive, that's fine, but they can be contained and limited to other people who want to engage in that sort of thing. Maybe they could even voluntarily tag their own comments if they know that it's not for everyone.

I'll add that on Lemmy I am sometimes afraid of even downvoting comment that I consider too hostile, at least if others seem to upvote it. This is because I vaguely recall that votes are public, at least to instance admins, and I figure some instance admins could be irrational and doxx me or something.
