Homeowner shoots, kills 2 men in ski masks claiming to be officers, HPD says
Schrödinger’s cop. Every masked creep with a power complex is simultaneously a dangerous criminal you should shoot on sight for your own protection and a police officer with qualified immunity. The waveform collapses when you get tried for murder, if you win it was a criminal all along, but if you get the electric chair it was a cop.

Y’all remember the computer room? Like that guest bedroom or whatever that wasn’t really used for anything other than housing The Computer?

what’s your best “nitric acid acts upon trousers” moment?
Early in my career I did tensile testing on adhesive coupons. I was running an experiment to simulate heating and cooling cycles on a bond. I had a nice big thermal chamber from the 1960’s, lined with heating elements (and undoubtedly asbestos), a big old dewar of liquid nitrogen, some thermocouples, and a PID controller the size of a German Shepherd.
Problem is, cold air sinks. My samples are sitting on the bottom of this huge chamber and their temperature is fluctuating wildly every time a bit of LN2 is added. The ancient PID controller cannot cope with my shitty test setup, it’s trying to turn on the damned heaters to control the temperature when I’m trying to go cold and this is a multi-hour test and I just want to go home.
But… I have a cardboard box. Nice, insulative cardboard, just the right height to get my samples off the floor of the chamber and into a zone where the temperature is more stable. I am brilliant! Cardboard box deployed, I can finally begin my thermal cycling.
I learned a few things that day:

Texas can ban emergency abortions despite federal guidance, court rules
Why the fuck would anyone want to ban medical emergency abortions? How would any sane person think this is a moral stance? The only goal is to kill women. How is this a mainstream political party’s stance?
Just declare open season on women already. Jesus Christ these people are fucking sick.

What is something that most people normally do that you find weird?
I kiss my parrot because it is a cultural ritual we have built together. I make smoochy noises at him and he mimics them back to me because he wants to communicate. I kiss his little beak and he supposes this is a thing I must like doing so he starts doing it back. It makes me smile and make happy noises, which he recognizes. Now we have a fun thing we do that means we’re buddies. He trains me to offer up my nose for him to smooch if he makes a specific little whispery sound. His only reward is the opportunity to boop me on the nose with his beak but he evidently finds this incredibly amusing and will occasionally whisper at me relentlessly until I give in. He will let me smooch the back of his head at nighttime because it means he gets to stay up later. His feathers are soft and he smells nice so I like it too.

There are a lot of people with impossible fantasies. They want their partner to be spontaneous but only when it’s convenient, they want a sense of danger but no real danger (but they want to believe there is real danger). It leads people to do stupid stuff like under negotiating kink scenes in the interest of “realism”. People get hurt.
You did the right thing. Some goth girl will be lucky to have you tie her up someday.

speedometers
A thermometer is like if we measured speed by crashing a car into a barrier and gauging how much it made the barrier shake.

Bat Drip
I worked at a pet store in college. There was a really chill baby king snake there that I’d hang out with when I was working the cash register. He’d loop around my neck and just hang out like a little snake necklace for hours. Scared the shit out of a few customers who thought he was a piece of jewelry until he moved 😅

Meanwhile Ball
Funnily, they no longer make either of these products. The glass jar division was sold decades ago, and the aerospace sector was purchased by BAE last year. Ball is still the largest manufacturer of aluminum cans, however. They also make plastic bottles.

The more you know
Before Avril, we called it rollerboarding. The boards were considerably larger and you would propel yourself along with a long pole, like a gondola. Only the wealthy could afford true rollerboards, however, we would make our own with scrap wood. I had one that was a modified old door that I had attached bicycle wheels to the sides of. That board would FLY down hills but you needed the whole neighborhood to pull the damn thing back up again.

Let me have a little schadenfreude, as a treat
I feel for all the people who will have to live with the fear and trauma of witnessing this. I’m glad nobody else was hurt. This type of violence is a consequence of our gun-obsessed and highly politically polarized culture, which Kirk had a massive hand in making worse. I hope we can focus on the damage his rhetoric has caused and those who were taken in by him can use this as a learning moment.
