Hi, I am graduating in biotechnology and my professors discussed this in class. The main points they brought up were:
1: the technique used for gene editing in those test subjects was and still is not 100% specific. With the correct primers you can still have incorrect breaks in the DNA and incorrect adhesion of your gene of interest, pair of bases can be lost and/or introduced indirectly, causing mutations that range from luckily encoding the same aminoacid to a sequence break, altering all of the following aminoacids and resulting in either a truncated protein that luckily does nothing to a protein that results in who knows what damage to the cell. This is ok in situations where you're changing just a few calls inside or outside of the body, but when you're changing the genome of an entire person, that is extremely dangerous for no real gain because
2: the gene he edited was still being studied and was not guaranteed to give them immunity and it turned out they didn't gain immunity to HIV.
3: there are better ways to guarantee a baby is not born with HIV that are better known, do not involve possibly giving ultra cancer to babies and have been throughout tested before, they did not advance our scientific knowledge and put people's lives in danger for no guaranteed benefit besides his own ego.
There's a reason why the entire scientific community was against his actions, especially those who work with genetic editing.

The thing is, sometimes you need Microsoft not of your own volition but because of bureaucracy. When I was signing a contract recently, the government required me to fill in a office word document and it would not work at all on libre, I had to scramble around the house, went through 3 different computers trying to get any of them to have office working after I just recently uninstalled it from all of them to use libre only, but in the end I had to use a university computer to fill in the doc.

Sugar is horrible for concrete, it completely stops it from setting in the right amount (which is very little for a lot of concrete) and even if it's too little, the concrete is definitely weakened, so whatever you do, please do not add any sugar to the concrete in your protests, no soda thrown into the liquid concrete or anything of the sort, we don't want to cause damage to those buildings, right?

Local hospital wants to make it *really* sure nobody is taking the shortcut to the morgue in the basement...
Reply in thread
Very american point of view. My first thought was "oh dam, someone in a disturbed mental state (tbh I thought suicidal) attempted to jump/jumped and the hospital wants to make sure no one else hurts themselves that way! That's good care!" But we can also look through the extremely negative POV of no one does anything good ever unless there's money on the line, right?

Sanders: Democratic Party ‘has abandoned working class people’
I wonder why Bernie and other progressives don't band together and announce their own party. With enough big names (especially Bernie) they could gather enough attention to be a viable third party that actually represents progressive and more left leaning ideas than the democrats. They have two years until the next local elections to get their foot on the race, I think they could get done traction if they actually go for that

This is the fifth person I see misinterpreting what Steve said about doing Linux performance testing, they aren't going to start doing this soon, they will only start doing it WHEN SteamOS is released for desktops! It was very clear on the video FFS
I'm also really fucking excited for that tho, I recently switched to mint and helldivers 2 actually feels smoother than on windows, it has been such a good experience!! I cannot imagine how much better things will get with more people jumping to Linux and thus game makers actually pay attention to us

Nah we don't have a common enemy, you couldn't accept my taste for pineapples, I will not start being best buddies with you just because you think there's someone with a worse taste, you'll just use me to attack them and when there are no more kiwi pizza lovers you'll go back to attacking me, the pineapple pizza lover. Either grow up and accept people like different flavors than you, or the pineapple kiwi pizza alliance will make you'll taste flavor combos you wish could go back to hell where they came (this is an allegory to queers who want to exclude queers more "flamboyant" than them so that the heteros can leave them alone)

Trump’s Pathetic Excuse Why He Can’t Debate Kamala Just Disappeared
Reply in thread
That is actually a freaking phenomenal idea! Making it like one of those videos of "expert x reacts to" with Kamala watching some of trump's promises and just destroying them not only makes her able to simultaneously explain why he's a terrible person and terrible president and show how she's a good pick, it would also make it accessible to younger demographic, increasing her base from not just taking the indecisive voters but from getting more people to vote!

LegalEagle Suing PayPal's Honey

You didn't even watch the video, did you? This was not affecting only those who were a sponsor for honey, they affected EVERYONE who had an affiliate link, from the Mrbeast youtubers to people who actually check their sponsors because honey.
What honey would do is take away any affiliate commission for themselves, not only taking that money but by changing the cookie from others to theirs, so if a person with an affiliate link that did everything right, got a good sponsor with integrity and did a proper video showing the good and bad side of their product would still lose because instead of the sales showing that people came from the good creator, honey would change to their tracking, making the business not want to sponsor the good creator and the good creator wouldn't even get their commission from the sales they made because honey stole them
