I've never liked this saying.

I usually hear it as "if your friends [...], would you do so too?" If my friends—who I feel are quite level-headed—were jumping off of a bridge, I think they would probably have a pretty good reason. Is there a bear charging us from behind and they've noticed but I haven't? Is it because the bridge is short and they're safely jumping into some water for fun? (I've done this before. If the conditions are right, it's perfectly safe for those who can swim.)

Surround yourself with good, level-headed people. If your friends are arrogant/ignorant or not all that bright, you can't assume they're right to jump. If you've built up a sensible group of peers and they all are or are not doing something, you should at least consider why you are the outlier.

Then again, I just wanted to dispute this saying. I'm not saying I agree with OP here.

You need context from the show to get this meme. This episode is a satire on how women who molest minors are treated differently and how some people are inclined to congratulate the molested instead of seeing them as victims.

It's not nice, and we need to view the attitude of situations like this being "nice" as messed up. Hence the meme.

I'm sure for anyone who has real work to do, GIMP will hold them back compared to Photoshop.

But I grew up using GIMP and got some pretty impressive results with it. Now that I have Adobe CC access and have been using Photoshop through that, I am perpetually confused on how to do x, which I know how to do in a couple clicks in GIMP.

To be fair, I'm sure that'd go doubly so for someone who started with Photoshop since it does have an objectively cleaner UI.

Uh, no. Almost everything you can do for logical security only requires free software. Something as easy as ticking the box "encrypt my drive" and putting in a good password when installing Ubuntu or whatever is about as easy as it gets and is LUKS2 ("actual security", as far as at-rest data encryption is concerned).

I love me some bullet trains, but there is a certain distance that makes planes way more viable.

There should be a lot more (and higher quality) high speed rail between cities of moderate distance, however.

Japanese folklore, as Shinto, puts forth the idea that inanimate objects can have (or develop?) their own (personified) spirits. This has carried over to modern behaviour and beliefs, where personification of objects is quite common.

Even if most Japanese don't identify as being of Shinto faith/spirituality, and probably don't believe that random inanimate object X has a living spirit within it, items are often treated with great care as though they were to have a spirit. (theory time: maybe this plays a part in why you can often find used items in such good condition in Japan...)

In Japanese, 面 is indeed men but I haven't seen it used for noodles. It is usually used for face, mask, (rarely) man.

麺 is the kanji for noodles (notice that 面 is a radical). But, noodle is also often just written in kana as either めん or メン.

Note I am not a native speaker, so not totally confident.

I believe 面 is used for noodles in Mandarin...?
