Part of cyberpunk is that the gilded corporations in the sky have white labs and clean computers, but the other part is that street people find their own uses for the leftover hunks of technology considered to be not pretty enough for sale.

In less convoluted terms, nobody fucking needs cloud computing. We used to write software on things that were half as powerful just a decade ago, and software capabilities have stagnated even as computing power has increased because the focus is more on stupid corporate bullshit than...you know? actually solving problems?

The phone you have in your pocket (or even posted this post on) is likely more powerful than anything that was even available 10 or 15 years ago. The joke computers that they'll sell you right now for $200 with an adware-ridden crap OS like Chromebooks are capable of running and even building better software than anything that was available during the first software boom in the late 90s (they just might need a good wiping first).

I am much more interested in the part of cyberpunk we haven't seen much of....where people take down Flock cameras and make them into free wifi repeaters or other types of servers and hobbyists take over again. Corporate software sucks nuts.

Yep, no idea which is which. Maybe everyone's software scammers at this point, couldn't tell you. Seemed a little me-centric to assume that was the case, but could be. 🤷

Most produced products seem like production labor is very low cost (they outsource to somewhere to have "very grateful" five year olds do it) and the majority of the "in-house" labor is things like sales and marketing (which aren't even usually in-house which is why I put it in scare-quotes). But all of this is admittedly anecdata.

I kinda doubt this is true for most businesses to be honest. It's just the expense that most pisses them off.

It's kinda like if you ever get into an argument with someone about US government spending. Many people believe military personnel is the biggest ticket item for the pentagon when it is not even close.

Many companies spend more on marketing (in house or more often outsourced) than they do on labor. But for some reason, labor is always what pisses them off.

I think there can be some application of these things, but becoming cripplingly dependent upon AI when it remains to be seen whether or not the products will continue to be made or updated seems reckless.

There is nothing saying that AI in its current form will continue to exist. The main risk is that the companies providing the models today, as well as those providing open weight models, have been in serious need of a functional business model for years now.

Without the continued investment, on which I don't know what the return even is, even local run models will go stale.

There's a frenzy right now that is scrambling everyone's brains, and tokens are supremely subsidized. I'm asking what happens when the subsidies end.

It's quite possible to use these things to produce code you are capable of maintaining without them, but it's just as possible (if not much more likely) to create mountains of shit that nobody understands, in which case we'll all be pretty fucked the day the models go dark.
