Are people still referring to the US as the land of the free? Been seeing a lot less of that lately. Edit: Stupid autocorrect

14

Free of what? Free to what?

It's certainly not the bastion of liberty and democracy it's purported to be on all the posters, no. At the best of times, it never was.

Still, I'd rather that be the motto hanging over us and printed on our money rather than "Fuck it, all minorities go to prison," even if it's more hypocritical - it sets a goal in the sky for us to reach for.

4

What else would they do, not brutally assault someone? C'mon now.

6
lemmy.world

Even if she was breaking some sort of law, I doubt the consequences was being slammed head first on tile.

Everything coming from a cop is basically their own personal punishment toward the person they don't like for exercising their rights.

21
lemmy.ca

and the good news is she can hire a lawyer and they can have the cop face a judge and jury on a lawsuit.

4

"Qualified Immunity" -- I think most judges would grant a motion to dismiss before jury selection; most judges grant a lot of deference to police and prosecutors.

6

I suppose that is better than nothing. If he had killed her, which based on the force was entirely possible, she would not be be able to sue. Also, lawsuits are time consuming and expensive. They are not the panacea people think they are.

3
lemmy.world

Even if she was breaking some sort of law, I doubt the consequences was being slammed head first on tile.

I bet the mindset was something like "I'm going to end this fight now and if you get injured I don't care (beyond calling for a paramedic)." That's pretty common among cops in my personal experience.

We'll obviously never know what would've happened if she'd cooperated, but just from this clip I doubt it would've been a legal arrest and I hope she wins in court.

Everything coming from a cop is basically their own personal punishment toward the person they don’t like for exercising their rights.

Often times, yes; if people want to do something and they think they can get away with it, they will often do it. Cops are no more virtuous than anyone else in this regard, but the list of things they can get away with is longer and more dangerous.

Are you seriously insinuating that tiny ass woman was going to hurt that big fat ass cop? You telling me that he was scared for his life that he needed a face plant her?

As long as she's not striking him or has a weapon, her voice should mean fuck all. Fuck that cop in his neck with a rusty pipe

2

No.

You telling me that he was scared for his life that he needed a face plant her?

No.

For all the mass shooters the states have, can just one of them shoot up a police station? Please? Why do you dumb fuck yanks always choose schools, as a people you literally would rather kill kids than Nazis.

Everyone knows they only hit soft targets like gun free zones. The only person more cowardly in Uvalde than the cops was the shooter.

17

Usually because it's kids (or students in college) shooting up schools, not necessarily 3rd party adults.

As a reaction to things like bullying and injustice within their life and within school.

3

I'm not in favor of anyone getting shot but your logic makes a ton of sense.

3

Easy targets, they want a high kill count, its not about right and wrong for them

Found an article from the Salt Lake Tribune.

Azalea was booked into the Utah County Jail, the statement said, charged with disrupting a meeting, a class A misdemeanor, and interference with a police officer and assault on a police officer, both class B misdemeanors. The two people who left the meeting with her were given citations, the statement said.

...

After she was released, Azalea told The Tribune she got a CT scan because of “intense jaw pain.” While her jaw was not broken, she said she has a concussion and bruises on her jaw, shoulder and knee.

So they fucked her up and then charged her with assault.

162

So they fucked her up and then charged her with assault.

It's very common for the police in this country to use DARVO techniques.

9

That’s the cop playbook because they are little administrative bitches

He needs to be tried and hanged. He premeditated that. He took her to open space and away from witnesses to do that. Tried, convicted, hanged.

39

Watch his right foot just as he rounds the railing, right at the beginning of the video. That foot stopped and he pulled with his hips.

4

I think ICE, as a class, should be trialed and hung. Nuremberg only killed about 210 Nazis. We shouldn't make the mistake of being restrained against such monsters.

16

I mean, a few years in prison being someones cum dumpster would be fine with me. I think hanging him is very slightly excessive and too short of a punishment as well. Why not go about it slowly and methodically? By the way, the terrorist's name is Utah County Sheriff's Deputy Phillip (Phil) Crawford.

Conservatives are inherently violent and are biologically unable to experience empathy. This is why they support and celebrate this kind of violence on their victims.

Conservatives do not see normal people as humans. They never will.

22

This might be the real answer. No one cares about our rights or safety, but when utilities get inconvenient for coporations, things get handled. Its the most American solution to this violence.

4

Inside, outside yeah, just preferably without screwing anything up in surrounding neighborhoods that are already suffering from these parasites.

10

This shit needs to be shut down. This cop is the one that belongs in a cage. He's a fucking inhuman animal.

Unreported? So who compiled the stats? General Armstrong pulling them out of his ass? Like I know what you're saying and I agree but I'm trying to figure out how to get "rates" from something that's unreported and therefore unobserved. If you mean self-reported in anonymous surveys as opposed to reported to the state, then no shit. Why would you report to your own abusers. "Hey yeah so my husband who is also your colleague beats me" "tough luck" "oh ok bye"

-2

Currently the records reflect 40% of all LEO’s have been reported for DV versus the 10% of other professions. So yeah that’s what’s reported/documented. I assume it’s much higher due to what you pointed out, they are probably not reporting it to their abusers and probably at a much lower rate than the average population does because of this.

The actual reported numbers are from 911 calls about DV.

220,000 last year involving LEOs.

The government wants you to support datacenters. By force if necessary. The owners of the datacenters running AI on them are hemorrhaging money. The wealthy don't stand to make very much on them at all.

One day this cop will be dropped as part of mass layoffs, and will rage-protest until his Boston Dynamics replacement face-slams him into the floor.

That's not a good thing.

11

This is a bit of a hot take, but I think security services are going to be the absolute last thing that will be replaced.

Looking how much money was dumped into ICE and attempts at federalizing local PDs, I think they need the human element of brutality.

16
lemmy.world

Just a quick poll, has anyone ever had an interaction with a police officer where you're grateful they exist?

Like has a cop ever done anything that's actually helped you(not including 'going easy' on you, or letting something side)?

I've had one good interaction with a police officer who put his lights on and parked behind me while I had to change a flat tire on the interstate in a section with no real shoulder.

Other than that I've been harassed several times by cops, pulled over for BS reasons as an excuse for them to search my car for weed, which they did so illegally, and the charges were later dropped. I've also had a cop pull a gun on me when I was like 16 because my friends and I were play fencing with sticks in a parking lot.

But seriously, they have huge budgets, all sorts of Kit, and walk around in body armor trying to display an intimidating presence, but what do they actually do? They have military weaponry and yet can't be bothered to stop school shootings, or hold rich pedophiles and literal traitors accountable, and they'll assault you for trying to use rights that you're guaranteed to have per the constitution.

They're basically society's equivalent of Walmart greeters. They stand around hoping their presence will deter people from committing crimes, but really they just exist to keep property safe.

lemmy.world

My son was choking to death and a police officer saved his life.

My brother died in a car accident and they caught the guy who did it.

There are many decent police officers and they serve a real function in society.

THIS DOES NOT EXCUSE THE ACTIONS OF THOSE WHO DO WRONG.

THIS DOES NOT EXCUSE THE - INACTION - OF THOSE WHO ARE TURNING A BLIND EYE TO BEHAVIOR LIKE THIS

Also, another side note. The police helped me convince my local parks and rec board to get signage for no fishing on a bike trail that was around a blind corner where people would crash their bikes all the time due to bags, coolers, poles, etc.. they advocated for this with me which I found commendable.

I try to keep an open mind while also admonishing what I see is bad. I'm hoping that someday somehow they'll remove the stigma of reporting bad apples from police departments and prioritize real oversight

40
lemmy.world

Sounds amazing. I was assaulted and the cops refused to do anything, despite knowing exactly who did it. I've also been harassed by the police. I would personally submit almost 100% of them to Nuremberg 2.0. The system needs to be 100% dismantled and rebuilt.

3

The problem is the system and structures in place that attract, create, and protect all the bad ones. Of course there are some well-intentioned people who are cops.

There were also some American slave owners who educated their slaves, allowed them to have personal property, and even left them a portion of their inheritance after they were freed. This doesn't make slavery good or moral, and it doesn't excuse the fact that those slave owners willingly participated in a horrific, unethical system, even if they individually were (relatively) kind to their slaves.

The entire structure of modern policing is fundamentally intended to protect the rich and powerful and enforce the social stratification between them and the working class.

It's wonderful that that your son's life was saved by a cop, but it should've been a paramedic. It's great that some cops helped you advocate for better signage on that trail, but it should've been a pedestrian community group or public transportation organization.

The healthy, constructive functions of the police should be provided by a host of publicly accountable services and organizations that specialize in specific things like mental health crisis response, suicide intervention, traffic safety, etc.

And as a society, we need to figure out how we ought to deal with the one class of emergency that cops actually are supposed to deal with, extreme violent threats. Somebody with a weapon who has killed or is trying to kill other people.

But make no mistake, there is no way to "reform" modern policing. The only long term solution is to dismantle that system completely, piece by piece, and replace each part with a well-funded, accountable, and worker/community based alternative. It's not about replacing "bad cops" with "good cops" anymore than fixing organized crime would be about getting more honorable mobsters into power.

7

Yes.

My little brother (17 years old) was in some danger from my mother who had kicked in his door because she was mad and is known to throw things in her anger. Fearing he would be injured from whatever caused this, I drove over and picked him up (with her blessing... She screeched he was never welcome to return). The next morning I went to the police to report the incident, and get advice on what to do next. I knew she would change her mind the next day and I wanted to be prepared.

The police officer took the time to talk to me about the relevant laws and what to do should she try to retaliate. That night she called the police on me and that officer was AWFUL. He did everything he could to escalate the situation, threatening to charge me with "a crime", yelling at me, etc. I told him his colleague had informed me of the relevant laws, and unless a judge intervened, we were allowed to wait for CPS to weigh in on the matter. He persisted with his threatening, so I asked who his Sargent was, and asked to speak with them. He said he would have him call me. Not liking his tone, I called the headquarters myself and reported the situation, and where we were with a different Sargent. His called later, but when he found out she was involved, quickly disengaged himself from everything.

She was also quite nice, and let us know the best way to safely handle the situation. Thanks to her and the first police officer, we were eventually able to make amends with everything and no future incidents occurred. My little brother was returned to my mother's care, and she never repeated the behavior. In the end, it's a good story of how it SHOULD work.

But imagine if I had never called. If I continued to feel like the aggressive cop was going to be putting my little brother into an unsafe environment, and I felt like I had to protect him. THAT cop would have loved to use force, and what would our family be like today?

I guess the moral of the story is, if you suspect an issue will arise, be proactive in finding the best solution. If you wait, there are a lot of bad solutions with the cops that will probably happen.

15

i grew up in the hood, cops were always late and often made the situation worse

13

My ex was being assaulted coming out of her car to walk inside. 5 cop cars were there in less than 60 seconds, suspect fled and they chased him down. Brought every charge against him they could find. We did NOT live in a great area.

That would be the only time.

10

I don’t know if this counts but the “community safety officer” (police officer) assigned to my kid’s elementary school helped get the town to clear their own damn sidewalks so my kids could safely walk to school even after it snowed.

20 years later they are still doing it!

5

The police as an institution make sense when viewed from the paradigm that they're a right-wing paramilitary charged with protecting capital and suppressing left-wing action.

6

Cops have never improved someone's day. Unless you're wealthy and they were working for you.

The cops violent aggressors in this video are working for the data centers, not the people.

1

If conservatives were removed from policing, there would be no more racism or bigotry in policing. There would be no more overt bad shootings, no more dishonest warrants, no more bullying, no more targeting of the vulnerable and no more shitty cops.

There are countries where people actually get along fine with their cops. Those are countries that don't allow conservative bigot dickbags to have such a job.

-4

In all seriousness, yes. I sometimes call for noise (music, shouting, banging noises (not that kind)) during late hours, they show up and help.

They also make me feel relatively safe in my god awful neighbourhood.

But... I do see how that isn't very much..

Edit: who tf downvotes this? This is the most lukewarm thing I've posted that day. TIL this community hates all cops indiscriminately, no matter if the cops are good or bad. Great way to alienate good people.

8

I'm not going to comment on the legality of this because I'm no lawyer and my SOP/statute knowledge is rusty, but here's my insider info I can state with certainty:

  1. Large cops doing quick takedowns like this are respected/valued by cops because they end (potential) fights quickly.

  2. The proper, ideal takedown for a resisting subject is called a "bent-wrist takedown," which looks a lot like an Aikido takedown known as "ikkyō ura."

Generally speaking, an improper takedown like this is going to be decided with the following sequence:

  1. Was it legal? (If so, skip reviews of the technique or injury to the subject) (Believe it or not, other than big picture influence on legislators, unions have no effect here other than paying for a defense attorney)

  2. Was it within SOP/training? (This is where the technique gets picked apart and - if there's a union - the union rep steps in to defend the accused)

The only hope of a negative outcome for this officer is Step 1, as Step 2 is almost certainly going to not result in adverse action for him.

He didn't move, his leg was stretched and pulled him down because he skips leg day. He's got a weak foundation and only went for looks.

Weak base + big top = heavy slam because most of the mass was holding her.

Sure, I normally trip a few seconds after I brush lightly into something with the center my body. Makes total sense.

I also like to wind up whatever I'm holding so that I can accidentally slam it into the ground.

Look at his left arm: you can see him putting force into it. This wasn't an accident, it was 100% intentional.

26
lathreply
lemmy.world

You're not looking at the video. Dude trips on the bar with his foot as he cuts the corner. Because he's turning, he nicks the upper corner with his hip, gets dragged forward, muscles stretch, he loses control, goes down tensing and slams with everything because that's what you do when you fall, you tense the muscles to cushion the damage.

It's standard physics and biology. You take a fall and see if you welcome it. And don't try to convince me otherwise, just saw a lady yesterday at the recovery who tripped on the corner of the stairs and she fell on her hand like this dumbass slams his, because that's our basic instinct. Only this guy had someone else attached to it, to their misfortune.

-29

"Don't try to convince me otherwise," truly an open-minded approach to viewing evidence.

I've never once tripped and spasm'd into the floor, but I guess you're just built different.

While at first blink it might seem like the railing catches onto his gear and he trips because of that... look at the other (left) leg. His leg is out to trip her already before he "falls".

Also the force used to slam her into the floor is NOT "man falling with full weight". No, based on the speed and sound alone I can tell you the force was 2-3x larger at least.

What are you even talking about. Go rewatch the vid at 0.25 the speed, the guard rail isn't even moving when it get passed by. But he does put his left leg outside her legs before twisting his shoulders on the opposite direction and going full judo practice on concrete to a woman half his weight.

19

Yeah it’s extremely obvious if you scrub through that part even a little bit slowly.

What a big strong man, has to do a fucking leg sweep or whatever to overpower this girl

5
lathreply
lemmy.world

Alright, i reviewed the video more times, zoomed in. I checked each section and here's the correction of my initial, mistaken view.

The dude doesn't trip on the metal bar with his foot. He's taking long strides and tries to go over or around the metal bar mid stride, while also changing direction. I still think his legs are weak and he lost strength when turning because he overstretched himself. His head was directed at her, then turned when he was changing direction and went down.

I can't say it's intentional because to me he didn't seem to look at where he was going to throw and his face/nose was very close to the floor, which i think spooked him after.

Did he care he was slamming her? I doubt that. It was probably a case of 'better her than me'. But I still don't think it was an intentional move in this case.

People who do judo or know police martial moves can completely shut me down on this. I will accept their judgement.

-22

Her body completely left the ground. She was physically completely in the air because of the leg sweep and tugging on her. Then he has her by the neck. Nothing in this motion indicates an oopsie, I slipped and forcibly tugged her to the ground and got lucky that she landed in my control.

FYI cops will kill you boot lickers too.
