Where was her husband assassinated?

Reply in thread

I'm not the person who commented earlier, but I think they were referring specifically to "mass shootings," which are more associated (at least, the perspective is) with being somewhat random. I think most Americans are more afraid of being shot at random in a mass shooting by mistake, as it would be out of their control.

Separately, gun violence as a whole is a huge problem. It is typically more associated with gang and criminal activity (which are of course big problems), but many Americans feel if you avoid dangerous areas you should more or less avoid gun violence, as the mass shootings tend to (but don't always) get an incredible amount of news coverage. Additionally, many of those mass shootings are gang shootings. It's really the school shootings, mall shootings church shootings, etc that people are afraid of. And those are a real problem, though the numbers are smaller than the hype would make it seem.

That being said, other countries don't seem to have the same issue, so it's still wild to have to try downplaying the violence.

‘DOMMED TO FAIL’ [OC]

Reply in thread

I think the joke is that a dominatrix is meant to, well, dominate their client (sexually). Think like with whips and chains, for example. Unfortunately, everything in her house, even the ficus, dominates her. It's a bad first impression and she appears to be unfit for the role.

PMS

I'm a guy, so maybe it's because I'm not a woman, but I definitely don't understand the joke here. Does anyone actually expect the left side? I've quite literally never once heard anything to suggest that pms is some sort of a positive experience (definitely not a "sexy" one).

Argue!

Reply in thread

I think that's exactly what that person is saying though. There is plenty of opportunity for good public infrastructure, but bad policy and auto lobbies have prevented them from happening. A good example is how most neighborhoods are not allowed to be located with businesses/shops/restaurants, and vice versa. This simple change would make so much more of the country more walkable

While everything you said is valid, sometimes that question is pure curiosity. "Because i want to" is completely valid, though I'd love to know what the inspiration for that desire was. Did you hear a really cool battle song? Some orchestral piece that sounded great? A friend recommended it? Couldn't find an ocarina? Jamming to some folk metal?

I swear I'm inquisitive!

A conservative billionaire had some things to say

Compared to the other Uber wealthy, he at least seems to have some sort of a code of ethics from what i can see, which is obviously limited. He's still in it to make money (obviously), but his actions seem to suggest that he won't go to the extreme of hurting everyone else just for money.

I started liking Mark more when he opened cost plus drugs. It's a pretty decent endeavor to try to reduce pharmaceutical costs for the consumer

De-escalation

In the post, someone replied that they get fired if they don't deescalate properly. It sounds like the person you referenced did get fired. So i think that does add up?

Driving direction in Europe, 1922

Reply in thread

Comments like these remind me that so many maps are super unfriendly to the color blind, which has to be annoying to so many people

Edit:

Didn't realize this was specifically in 1922, so it looks like it is probably due to a combination of war/control and legal changes.

Austria was apparently split based on which part of the country was controlled by Napoleon, and this lasted for quite awhile, though a few sources cite different lengths of time for the mixed driving laws. I wanted to use a local source here but it was paywalled.

Also, apparently Italy and Spain (and Canada?) changed from left side to right side drive in the 1920s, so this probably reflects that change in Europe.

Anon dates a 19 y/o

Reply in thread

Just for a little context, the minimum age being ((your age / 2)+7) is meant to be "this is the minimum age of someone you can date without it being creepy" (i believe it originated from the TV show how i met your mother)

If you were born in 1994 you are either 30 or 31. Let's call it 30 for easy math.

30/2 = 15 15+7=22

So anyone who is 22 or older fits the minimum age concept, which is anyone born in approx 2002/2003 or earlier. If you decided to include that, the extra 4-5 years does increase the dating pool quite a bit.

I'm not telling you who to date, just giving a little context to the math since that's what was brought up in the original comment.

Edit: Lots of folks chiming in with some really good insight about the history of the math. Thank you all for that!

Although the historical accounts seem to be math for the "ideal age" in a (probably female) partner and not "minimum age before it's creepy" as it was presented in HIMYM, it's really interesting to see how that equation has been used for over 100 years!

The implication is that he's buying a lot of large condoms because he has a large penis and has a lot of sex.

In reality, he is so addicted to gaming and drinking mountain dew that he can't be bothered to go to the bathroom, so he pees in the condoms.

I genuinely feel like I wouldn't live that differently even if I suddenly became ultra-wealthy. Am I kidding myself?

I feel like the wealthy people you see are the ones who either get excitement from flaunting it or from lying about it (for example, mtv cribs was all fake). There are plenty of stories (yes i know they're just stories) about multi millionaires who drive the same old truck, wear regular blue jeans, and have a nice quiet (albeit larger than average) home.

It's not crazy at all. I just think we see the outliers more frequently than not because they want us to see them.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is "underperforming", says industry analyst

Reply in thread

This is a really weird and unnecessarily aggressive take. I think that the other person is saying is that the communication about the games has been pretty poor, and it really isn't clear what the right move is. Other games make a lot more sense in both continuity and playing order. I'm not sure why that's such a difficult concept to grasp.

For example , FF7 remake isn't actually a remake. It's only the first act of ff7. Rebirth is somehow act 2? I don't understand why. Some people seem to think rebirth is DLC instead of part 2 and a standalone game at that.

I'm personally an og ff7 purist, and I'm rather annoyed that they split this up into multiple games. I'll just wait until all 3 are released and then... admittedly probably not play them unless they go on sale

Spanish woman killed by elephant while bathing the animal at popular sanctuary in Thailand

Reply in thread

I found a little bit more info just for your awareness. It looks like she was studying at University in Spain, and was on a student exchange program living in Taiwan. She took a holiday trip from Taiwan, which a quick google search suggests can be as cheap as $80 in off season (i.e right now).

I don't think it's fair to assume she was rich even by global standards. The average individual or family can absolutely save money for an $80 flight for a weekend vacation. According to Statista, the global average take home (net income) is equal to $8700 per year. An $80 plane ticket would be a little less than 1% of said income. That is a substantial amount of money for a vacation for some people, but still not an insurmountable amount to save up for. Considering this, it's more likely that she was enticed to take a weekend vacation by the low cost flight (but of course i don't know if that is actually what happened).

As a side note, it is completely disingenuous to classify someone who might possibly be living in poverty in one country (under 14,580 per year in the USA, or 9535 euros in Spain, for example), of being rich on a global scale. Those kinds of comparisons are not helpful, as you cannot necessarily use your 14580 in the USA in a country where that income would be considered high income (in thailand, $20,000 per year is high income. Doesn't quite overlap, but it's surprisingly close). Everything costs more in a high income country, including the cost of emigrating from that country. A comparably lower income earner in thailand might be considered a middle class earner and be able to enjoy more vacations and more leisure than most Americans.

I will agree that elephant related tourism is a huge problem, but that's a different discussion entirely.
