The Good Old Days

The sad thing is what they really miss is reasonable restrictions on industry and capitalism, a viable chance to support a family on a single full-time salary, and upward mobility, but rather than getting mad at the greedy capitalist assholes that have stolen these things from them, instead they let these exact same greedy assholes trick them into thinking that minorities and disempowered peoples are somehow the ones stifling progress.

The yearning for better days isn't inherently wrong, it's the conclusions they draw where they go astray.

‘We are losing our kids to a satanic cult,’ Sen. Tommy Tuberville warns during Utah campaign stop

This is just a quiet part out loud thing again. Remember, to most American evangelicals, anything less than a devotion to evangelical Christianity is satanism. It's a binary thing to them, so whether you're actually Jewish, or Hindu, or atheist, or whatever, it doesn't matter; if you aren't American evangelical Christian, then you are Satanist. I'm not being hyperbolic, this is a core tenet of American evangelical Christianity.

Human breast milk is the only naturally occurring food specifically designed for human consumption.

I'm waiting for somebody brave enough to promote the all-breast milk diet.

I've been to Mexico like 6 times.

The first 5 times were all excellent trips, wonderful places, wonderful people.

The sixth time, we were all literally robbed by Mexican police officers at the airport who claimed we couldn't leave the country without paying an "exit tax" of $200 USD each, and told us we either paid and got on our flight home or we didn't pay and they took us to prison.

I don't go back to Mexico now.

oh snap.

Snapping half the life forms also snaps half of the world's gut bacteria. If we removed half of the gut bacteria from those who weren't snapped, that would be removing 75% of the universe's gut bacteria, not 50%.

Age range

Why are we infantilizing adults? Interpersonal relationships are complex and nuanced; we can acknowledge and even warn against the potential dangers of severe age-gap relationships without insulting the autonomy and choices of those involved. These neo-puritanical bullshit tendencies creeping in on the left needs to stop; it's a trojan horse for the next generation of conservatives. Reject non-nuanced conservative-bate thinking.

I once worked a 12 hour shift at a MarketPro computer show booth where, I shit you not, the booth next to us was selling computer speakers and the guy running it let his child play Around The World on repeat all day.

No other songs

No break

No reprieve

Just almost 12 straight hours of Around The World.

I loved that song, but to this day I can't tolerate hearing it without triggering something akin to PTSD

I understand your desire, but life does not exist in a vacuum. While death of the artist may be easy for you, it is not as simple of an equation for others, especially when said author still lives and benefits monetarily from their creation. And yes, I think we have some culpability even in what we share for free, as keeping them culturally relevant allows their benefits and influence to continue.

Personally, I was a big Dilbert fan; my parents used to gift me a new Dilbert calendar annually and I subscribed to the Washington Post for years in no small part so I could read the weekly Dilbert strip. So I'll admit it, I take this particular betrayal a little personally. Finding out that Scott Adams was a racist bag of shit felt like hearing that my favorite uncle was actually an non-convicted rapist.

For what it's worth though, I am sorry that Scott Adam's gross personal abhorrent opinions get in the way of enjoying your silly office humor comic strip, sincerely.

Dark Brandon strikes again!

I don't understand the appeal of fake political tweets, especially those that serve to make out-of-touch politicians appear cooler or more in touch than they are in reality

Edit:

And for clarity I say this as somebody who is voting for Biden and thinks he has on the level done a vastly better-than-average job as President. Still don't wanna see "relatable Joe memes"

DEI or DIE

People still have no idea how bad it's going to get. People are still acting like this is just normal bad, a unfortunate moment in our otherwise decent system and society. This is not the reality. Things are going to get bad. This isn't doomerism, this is reality.

Please, take the necessary steps to secure and provide for you and your loved ones, and genuinely consider developing some kind of exit strategy. Do not downplay this until it's too late; be prepared before the sky turns red.

One day 👏

I still don't get this; who wants to log onto twitter and see reddit? Or log onto reddit and see twitter?

As somebody who never understood the appeal of twitter, I'm glad my Lemmy isn't clogged up with a bunch of Mastadon content, personally

edit: the likelihood that I'm missing some salient point here is high, so genuinely please educate me on what I'm not understanding

edit 2: Okay, I've read the replies and I get it a little bit more, especially the point about additional ease in growing the Lemmy userbase during this building phase. I'm not sure I'll ever really "get" the appeal, but you all have helped me understand the value to some degree, so thank you.

The future is a branching path

Make no mistake, that is the future that we were entitled to, but which was stolen from us by capitalists and despots.

The old sci-fi writers weren't wrong in their aspirations for us, we were wrong for letting our futures be taken away from us.
