Olive oil scams are proliferating: How do you spot a fake extra-virgin?
I know it's not the point of this post but holy cow is that an atrocious AI image.

Are there any instances that disable downvoting?
Yes, I think Beehaw for example has no downvotes (or doesn't show them).

Reactionaries and inconsistency are a match made in heaven

There's an estimation done in Germany every year. And the result is always that only around 4% of the the people on welfare abuse it. Compared to the damage that is done to the state by clever tax evasion of super rich people, these are peanuts. But going after these 4% of welfare abusers is of course easier so that's why they put a lot effort into it.

Sublinks Aims to Be a Drop-In Replacement for Lemmy
Reply in thread
I'm not saying that rewriting he backend is a good choice, but for me specifically, I'd like Lemmy to be written in Java. Why? I'm a Java software engineer for nearly 7 years now and I'd like to contribute. Yes, I could learn Rust, like I did learn Go, C, C++ and other languages during my cs studies. But I really don't have the free time and motivation to do that after I already worked 8-10 hours at my computer. If I could use my existing Java knowledge to quickly fix some small bugs or whatever, I'd love to do that. But the hurdle to learn a new language (including other paradigms and best practices) just to contribute to this one project is just too high for me.

Windows 11 will reportedly display a watermark if your PC does not support AI requirements
Reply in thread
My PC has a i7-4790k overclocked to 4.5 GHz. It runs smoothly since I got it when it came out and it is still not a bottleneck in any of the games I play. But if I wanted to upgrade to Windows 11 I would need to buy a new CPU, new main board and new RAM, and it would not improve my gaming experience at all. It was my last machine running windows which I changed to Linux 2 months ago and I haven't looked back.

Das tut mir sehr Leid, sowas sollten Eltern niemals sagen.

My new favourite password manager
Reply in thread
I have a different password for each service I use. Each password is 30+ characters long and completely random with letters, numbers and special characters. There's no way I could remember any of them and they'd be a hell to type out manually. I use KeePass on every device I own and it's synced over my NAS. So it's super convenient and no risk for leaks.

Gamechanger for me was automation with home assistant. I attached sensors everywhere and wrote scripts that nag me with notifications on my phone. For example I have a smart wall plug where the washer is attached to. If the power draw first rises over a threshold it means, that I started the washer. If it goes below a theeshold that means it's finished and it sends a notification. To make sure I don't ignore it, I attached a door/window sensor to the washer's door. So it reminds me every 5 minutes until I open that fucking door.
And I tried to identify as many situations like these as possible so it takes care of reminding me. It's not perfect and many things are not feasible to automate. But it helps me a lot!

Is feddit.de working?
Reply in thread
As wgbirne already said, the admin has more important real life stuff to do unfortunately. If I understood it correctly, the lack of storage also killed the database, leaving it in an inconsistent state. In addition to that there seems to be an issue with the backups so no easy rollback and probably a lot of manual fixing needed.

I have also been looking for a while. You have to open the sandwich menu in the upper left corner. Then there is a dropdown at the top and when you open that, you can click on "Add account".

Thoughts on how to take your library out of audible?
Yes, you can download your audiobooks on your PC with the Audible App and then use this tool to convert it. If you use M4A, the chapters should stay intact.

Hallo zusammen :) ging sehr schnell.
