Its no probs. This one was all volunteer contributions by skilled android developers who just want to make the fediverse better. I'm extremely grateful to all of them.
It is extremely impressive how much money these large tech companies throw at an app and it turns out to be shitty as fuck. I wonder what bullshit features they pack in to make it like that.
You have to check "Show content for collapsed comments". The default is actually Apollo/ Alien Blue style. Also I would recommend unchecking "show action bar for comments" so the vote buttons are hidden until the comment is long pressed.
That decision to lay a solid foundation for an Android app really bearing fruit right now. Thanks for all the hard work and thanks to all the new contributors.
I've been incredibly impressed at how fast the Jerboa team is working to catch up with the influx of new users and issues. Massive thanks for all the work getting done!
Only thing missing for now is the ability to sort comments in posts (as in new/popular/best,etc) like in the browser version, which has been sorely missing for the main community of one of my instances. Any info on when is that going to be implemented?
The login feature is not really intuitive. When not logged in and pressing on any of the icons below, instead of displaying a "login first" notification, bring the user to the login screen?
Possibility to collapse and expand comment threads (as @[email protected] pointed out this already works by touching the comment)
When I click on a link and it for example opens an image, allow me to press the Android back button to go back to the discussion. Right now the only option is to press the back arrow hovering over the image.
If there's a better place to post these requests let me know and I'll post it there
Comment threads are collapsible afaik, just touch and hold onea comment and release again. Admittedly there are no visual hints that this is possible, there a tutorial or something like that might help.
Same, I did have to remove the older version installed via f-droid before installation of the apk from GitHub would succeed though. That was when I updated from 0.0.31 to 0.0.32.
Updating to 0.0.33 then worked without uninstalling anything. Liking it so far!
Apps on Android 13 can support dynamic icons that adapt their background color based on the Monet coloring scheme.
This means if I set a blue wallpaper, all my apps become uniform with a white logo and blue background. Apps that do not support this immediately become an eye sore, as you get a perfectly uniform screen... And suddenly that bright red Netflix logo, for instance.
Are you asking about Jerboa or Android in general? It depends on your vendor's Android version and skin. For Samsung devices, it's found within the Color Palette options in the Settings app. On Realme and Oppo devices, it's a beta feature in the home screen customization tab.
I was looking for Samsung - thank you! Unfortunately it appears that a large percentage of my apps on my home screen don't support it, so it looks pretty funky.
The one feature I desperately want that Relay For Reddit has was a "Clear Seen Posts" button. You tapped it and it removed every post that I'd already viewed. There was another option to auto mark posts as "seen" if you just scrolled past them. I'd love for Jerboa to add that.
I just downloaded the APK from GitHub and it let me update it from the .32 version I installed via Izzyondroid - from the limited knowledge I have it's because the fingerprint of the apps are the same.
Does this mean it won't be an issue when Izzyondroid has .33, i.e. it will detect I've already installed it?
Thanks for all your hard work by the way. A good quality app is such an important thing to have in place to get people to use Lemmy. Reddit works perfectly fine on desktop via RES but the reality is most people browse it on their phone, hence all the drama at the moment.
I get it from f-droid rather than the play store and I did see the 0.0.33-alpha changelog on update earlier today so I would have expected to be on that version. Having said that the "What's new" link still says 0.0.32 which could be just a bad processing of the version number but maybe the f-droid version isn't right. Not sure. Still getting th flashes basically all the time.
So far it is amazing, thank you for the hard work making such cool app. One thing, it tooks me quite some time to find the add account button and change instance, maybe i'm dumb ๐คก
Same, honestly. From a UX perspective that should really be the most prominent function for a new user but it's tucked behind a swipe menu and a button press.
I'm actually curious to see how well GPT-4 could handle translations. Particularly because each translatable string has an identifier key in camel case English which gives clues about the context of the line to the translator, so I suspect it would do quite well compared to a naive "Google Translate all the strings" approach.
I'm looking forward to using the app! It's a bit too alpha for me to consistently use atm but I'll keep checking in. Thanks for making such an awesome project!
I have also been looking for a while. You have to open the sandwich menu in the upper left corner. Then there is a dropdown at the top and when you open that, you can click on "Add account".
Is there also a way to switch accounts or to add a new one?
Edit: figures it out. Apparently I had to click on my username, all the way at the top of the screen. Not on profile settings, where I had been looking for it. It's actually quite easy and works quite well in hindsight, but I'm leaving up this comment and this edit in case other people have issues finding it too.
Try a long tap on the comment body. If that doesn't work, try a tap or long tap on the comment header. It's possible there's a few bugs with some of the new comment interactions.
If you have an account on the other instance it's very easy, add the account and you can switch between them in like two button presses, if you want to migrate your account to a new instance, it's currently not possible
I don't even get the login prompt to show up. It just says "login first"
Edit: lol i just found out that it's under the hamburger menu when you click on anonymous. So might I suggest if you press any of the button below, especially the profile one that you get a login prompt? :)
It's not obvious where you are supposed to login; I struggled to find it at first too. Open your hamburger menu on the left, and at the top you should see a little arrow pointing down. Click it, and a new button should appear called "Add Account", and click it.
There, you can select what Lemmy instance you want to login with, then put your E-mail and password.
Yep thank you. I replied and then I actually found it. I edited my post and it seems I'm not the only one who thinks it's not really intuitive :) App's great though!
Top left, click anonymous then the add account and login option pops up, you need to make the account on the instance first though it's webpage on a browser
It might be the server you're using. For example, lemmy.ml has been completely down for me. Switching to another account on different server made the app work instantly ๐ค
Oh, so if lemmy.ml is slow then that affects the app as well?
However, it's slight stuttering when scrolling that's affect my app, like it's not smooth. I'm not too sure if that has anything to do with lemmy.ml. Apart from the stutters, Jerboa is decent for where it's at.
Ah, I see what you mean! I thought that the content was not being retrieved quickly. Might be something wrong in the app, as phil just mentioned. For me, it works well on EMUI 12.
I think there is definitely some scrolling lag and performance issues from all the new stuff going in. Some good fixes bring proposed on GitHub so hopefully it's better in the next release or so.
I appreciate the blur nsfw. I'd like to make a suggestion. Can we have an option to black out nsfw posts. You can still make out what the images are with the blur.
Blacking out the image would help with avoiding meetings with hr.
Thanks for all the hard work! Jerboa is better in alpha than the official Reddit app ever was (or likely will be).
Its no probs. This one was all volunteer contributions by skilled android developers who just want to make the fediverse better. I'm extremely grateful to all of them.
a few days i use jerboa daily : it's not perfect but i can deal with all the restrictions
But i really miss an option to make all post as 'read' with a single button Just a suggestion for the next release. Thank you for your great work
Open up an issue on the github if there isn't one already if you would.
I'm not even joking when I say that this app, despite being in alpha, is a more pleasant experience than the official Reddit app.
It is extremely impressive how much money these large tech companies throw at an app and it turns out to be shitty as fuck. I wonder what bullshit features they pack in to make it like that.
a considerable amount of code is used for "telemetry" and tracking.
This app is like... a soft fluffy blanket. Love it.
It's amazing what devs can accomplish when they don't have a bunch of greedy MBAs breathing down their necks
that first time committer list is fire!
Yeah, the number of skilled android devs contributing now is unreal. We're gonna loop past A LOT of reddit apps in two weeks at this rate.
The in-app image viewer is such a welcome feature!
thank you all for your hard work and contributions to making our experience on Lemmy so nice
Much easier to collapse comments now. Thanks!
I actually hate it, I keep doing it by accident.
Yeah, in Boost, I used a long press to hide comment, it was harder to do accidentally.
I wish it only hid the children comments, like Relay does, but this is better than it was.
There's a toggle for that in the settings.
You have to check "Show content for collapsed comments". The default is actually Apollo/ Alien Blue style. Also I would recommend unchecking "show action bar for comments" so the vote buttons are hidden until the comment is long pressed.
Hmm, I don't see that setting...
That decision to lay a solid foundation for an Android app really bearing fruit right now. Thanks for all the hard work and thanks to all the new contributors.

Thanks to everyone who has opened issues or submitted PRs! 14 new contributors this round!
Thank you devs, great release.
Might I add some remarks?
Possibility to collapse and expand comment threads(as @[email protected] pointed out this already works by touching the comment)If there's a better place to post these requests let me know and I'll post it there
This!
I started using Jerboa today and the login confused me. Jerboa demands login but I couldn:'t find out how to login first
I remember Slide for Reddit having similar issues with their UX but their error message is more informative IIRC
Comment threads are collapsible afaik, just touch and hold onea comment and release again. Admittedly there are no visual hints that this is possible, there a tutorial or something like that might help.
Holy shit you're right how did I miss this? haha ohwell ONE DOWN!
How long does FDroid usually take to show the update?
F-droid can be like a week, but izzyondroid should take less than a day.
I don't have patience, I just grabbed the apk from the github page...
Same, I did have to remove the older version installed via f-droid before installation of the apk from GitHub would succeed though. That was when I updated from 0.0.31 to 0.0.32. Updating to 0.0.33 then worked without uninstalling anything. Liking it so far!
The user experience is great for me. Terrific app even in alpha.
https://github.com/dessalines/jerboa/pull/528
Pull request is open.
Fantastic - thanks for your contribution!
Could you please explain this to me? I have no idea what you're talking about
Apps on Android 13 can support dynamic icons that adapt their background color based on the Monet coloring scheme.
This means if I set a blue wallpaper, all my apps become uniform with a white logo and blue background. Apps that do not support this immediately become an eye sore, as you get a perfectly uniform screen... And suddenly that bright red Netflix logo, for instance.
Where is this setting?
Are you asking about Jerboa or Android in general? It depends on your vendor's Android version and skin. For Samsung devices, it's found within the Color Palette options in the Settings app. On Realme and Oppo devices, it's a beta feature in the home screen customization tab.
I was looking for Samsung - thank you! Unfortunately it appears that a large percentage of my apps on my home screen don't support it, so it looks pretty funky.
Thanks for all your and contributors hard work. I've signed up for your Patreon and hope to see this platform flourish.
Oh wow it's looking so much more polished and that annoying white flash is gone.
Yay. Good job guys.
Congrats to everyone involved on this awesome massive new release! ๐ค
This is great. Just installed and the image viewer is great along with the fonts being consistent.
The one feature I desperately want that Relay For Reddit has was a "Clear Seen Posts" button. You tapped it and it removed every post that I'd already viewed. There was another option to auto mark posts as "seen" if you just scrolled past them. I'd love for Jerboa to add that.
Thanks to everyone involved!
Nice update. I'm glad I can now login to any community from any instance regardless of if it's in the list or not.
How long does it take for new versions to show up in Fdroid?
F-droid, about a week. Izzyondroid, about a day.
I just downloaded the APK from GitHub and it let me update it from the .32 version I installed via Izzyondroid - from the limited knowledge I have it's because the fingerprint of the apps are the same.

Will this update show up in PlayStore? Don't seem to have it yet
Play store usually takes about a day for them to approve it.
Nice. Thanks for the response ๐
It's there now, just updated :)
Play store update went live for me just now!
Oh nice, thank you for letting me know
Love the app! Thank you for being RiF's spiritual successor.
I'm so glad that white flash you used to get when switcing tabs is gone. Thank you for all your hardwork!
That's weird, still happens for when switching to basically anything. Like starting this comment for example!
Could it have something to do with your phone being set to light/dark mode? I'm not seeing the white flash.
Are you sure you're on the latest version (0.0.33)? Maybe it wasn't updated yet. You can go to the play store and check.
I get it from f-droid rather than the play store and I did see the 0.0.33-alpha changelog on update earlier today so I would have expected to be on that version. Having said that the "What's new" link still says 0.0.32 which could be just a bad processing of the version number but maybe the f-droid version isn't right. Not sure. Should I raise an issue to resolve?

Impressive update, I love the upvote/downvote on the side!
A great update!
Wish the image viewer would work in small card and list view. Is this a bug, or intentional?
Thanks to all the contributors!
That's definitely a bug, I opened an issue here: https://github.com/dessalines/jerboa/issues/513
Thanks for this! I just got into Lemmy/jerboa recently and was about to file some issues on github. But you fixed my them already :D

How can we help with localization?
Yep, instructions in the release notes.

Nvm. I was dumb. Loving the update!
Just downloaded earlier today after seeing the app mentioned in a comment - thanks for your work!
I'm looking forward to using the app! It's a bit too alpha for me to consistently use atm but I'll keep checking in. Thanks for making such an awesome project!
I still haven't figured out how to log in...
I have also been looking for a while. You have to open the sandwich menu in the upper left corner. Then there is a dropdown at the top and when you open that, you can click on "Add account".

I'm not sure but is there a bug of buttons not showing under comments in the inbox? I can't manage to open comments in their context
Try a long tap on the comment body. If that doesn't work, try a tap or long tap on the comment header. It's possible there's a few bugs with some of the new comment interactions.
Is there any way to change instance on Jerboa?
If you have an account on the other instance it's very easy, add the account and you can switch between them in like two button presses, if you want to migrate your account to a new instance, it's currently not possible
Hamburger in the upper left > click the username drop-down (night say anonymous if you're not signed in) > Add Account
Just did that to add Beehaw.
Click the top left to log in.
This update is incredible!!! Thank you devs!!!
Hi, for some reason after I log in Jerboa seems to forget who I am and asks me to login again.
I can't seem to login with Jerboa but I can with Firefox. Any help would be appreciated.
What exactly happens when you try to login?
I don't even get the login prompt to show up. It just says "login first"
Edit: lol i just found out that it's under the hamburger menu when you click on anonymous. So might I suggest if you press any of the button below, especially the profile one that you get a login prompt? :)
Gonna copy from a previous comment I posted
Yep thank you. I replied and then I actually found it. I edited my post and it seems I'm not the only one who thinks it's not really intuitive :) App's great though!
Top left, click anonymous then the add account and login option pops up, you need to make the account on the instance first though it's webpage on a browser
On my iOS device in Mlem. Canโt find any way to save. Commenting to access on my Android device later lol
You can just click save comment, it'll show up in jerboa.
I wasn't finding the option to save within Mlem lol. Regardless, I'm back on the Android device and updated to the github release
Thank you!
Just got the update, so many great changes! Thank you devs โฅ๏ธ
Thank you so much to all the contributors. This new user is very pleased with his new home on Jerboa/Lemmy !!
Anybody else experiencing lag on this app?
It might be the server you're using. For example, lemmy.ml has been completely down for me. Switching to another account on different server made the app work instantly ๐ค
Oh, so if lemmy.ml is slow then that affects the app as well?

No that's very likely not the server, I'm experiencing it too. Maybe I'll check out, if I can help optimize it.
Ah, I see what you mean! I thought that the content was not being retrieved quickly. Might be something wrong in the app, as phil just mentioned. For me, it works well on EMUI 12.
