That threw me for a loop as well. Finally figured out that they meant "exert".

As a young American, how do I motivate myself to work? It feels like the entire system is a scam and it's pointless to even try.
Reply in thread
Just my 2 cents, but the logistics part is substantial. Our jails and prisons are already overflowing (with the highest incarceration rate of the global north) so there's no quick process that is feasible. We should have plenty of warning as to what's coming down the works... as for having the means and ability to do anything about it? We shall see.
You're not helpless unless you don't take action. Build your community and celebrate the small wins. Find meaningful work(even volunteering) and build more connections to others. Having some of that to fall back on has kept me saner lately, and now I'm driven to focus more on that, least for the short term.

Homemade granola with yogurt, fresh berries, and mint from the garden
I know it's fairly simple to make but I haven't taken a stab yet. Do you mind sharing your recipe for the granola?

The American Justice System
Reply in thread
Wow... thanks for more context! So a state agency error results in the judge and prosecutor not having the correct information, but how does the defense attorney not look that up? Maybe overworked, but I would hope for more... And Harris should've spoken up himself that the suspension was lifted on this date by this agency! He could've also just said- I'm driving legally right now. That would have allowed the lawyers to look into it more.

Considering how under-funded and understaffed the IRS has been/is, they do a pretty amazing job with what they have to work with. Simplifying or redoing our tax codes again is a huge task that will take time. There does need to be some sort of progress though! We'll see what type of government we'll have shortly.

While I can concede your point that it's feasible and possibly even more practical to open from the stem, I gotta say that since switching to the other end years ago(because I saw a similar thread on reddit), it's been super easy and I've had zero issues. The stem just has a higher rate of fucking up, but it's not like either end will fully decimate the banana. Peeling properly after it's opened is an easy fix either way.

John Oliver promoted alternatives to big tech in last night's episode, including Mastodon and Pixelfed

Haha, yeah Cody has definitely made me cringe out of discomfort before. I haven't watched that guy in awhile! Appreciate the reminder. And Oliver can get close to that level too, for sure.

Biden worries ‘extreme’ supreme court can’t be relied on to uphold rule of law

But how long would those appointments be? Many justices have written about how long it took to adjust sitting on Scotus, even if they had plenty of experience on the court of appeals(Sotomayor I think?). So like a 10 year period might work. Scalia and RBG voted together a surprising number of times... So there is something to the experience brought to the table. Thomas's corruption is just nuts and Alito is frustrating, but the other justices at least have substantiating arguments mostly.

Rice and beans erryday
Reply in thread
I've experimented with this a little as my rice and bean consumption has also risen dramatically in the last few years. When using canned beans, it's easy to just add rice and either water, stock, or undrained cans of diced tomatoes(and always onion!) and pressure cook it all together.
When making the beans from dry, I'll just pressure cook for 30 min after soaking all night, then add the other ingredients and pressure cooker another 10-15 minutes, depending on type of rice. I'll usually simmer it for awhile after the pressure releases. It's a staple in our house! Mix up the seasonings and/or hot sauces and it's so satisfying.

Amazon Teams Up With Plan B for Epic Sci-Fi Series Adaptation of 'Consider Phlebas'
Reply in thread
Obligatory fuck amazon of course, but Reacher and Jack Ryan are both excellent adaptations imho. And Goliath is superb, not just because of Billy Bob Thornton, the supporting cast and writing is fantastic. None of these are sci-fi though, so maybe the genre matters? Ugh, now I feel weird defending amazon...

I've tried a few types of coconut-based yogurts that were tasty. I'm not a fan of almond milk, so didn't like those varieties as much. On the cheeses though, completely agree! I had one that was tolerable, but definitely falls in the "not good" category.

No politics inteded: Why isn't Trump after leaving office in any way or shape involved in politics say as member of congress or senate?

In addition to the veto power mentioned above, there's also the power to issue executive orders and to nominate judges, including supreme justices. Those are fairly significant. There's also the influence they have over foreign policy.

Cards Against Humanity offers payouts to new swing-state voters, responding to Musk's PAC

I could see the point being to spread the information on what is happening so that (hopefully) we could elect more people who would do something about it. There are some elections coming up where, theoretically, the power could shift. There's also lobbying our congresspeople, which can have an effect if enough people do it. The power of incumbency, uninformed voters, etc... make this a shitty situation, to be sure. I'm still trying to have hope that enough people pushing for change can find success. If not, I'll just be cynical at the bleak prospects of life.
I say all that to say, we should fight however we can, but definitely keep pushing forward!
