How does it make you feel when people use LLMs like search engines and then hand you extruded text as though it is factual? Have you seen IRL or just on boards?

Slightly different, but I've had people insist on slop.

A higher up at work asked the difference between i.e. e.g. and ex. I answered, they weren't satisfied and made their assistant ask the large language model. Their assistant reads the reply out loud and it's near verbatim to what I just told them. Ugh

This is not the only time this has happened

Reddit Refugees on Lemmy, how are you guys liking lemmy so far?

It seems fine, with a few concerns.

The federated nature could become confusing, especially for new users. For example, I'm not sure how a new user is supposed to distinguish between: [email protected] and [email protected] This seems like a potentially worse version of reddit's games vs gaming vs truegaming.

Also the lack of filtering options. Until I build up a reasonable amount of communities I'm subscribed to, I suspect I'll be using All more, which doesn't seem to have a simple way to do things like filter out all memes or just focus on text.

I've definitely been there quite a few times. I can get by romantically, but sometimes I just don't have the energy. Finding someone you mesh with can be exhausting.

I have a handful friends of varying genders who seem to be in similar boats. I can't be sure as I haven't asked. It seems like the current options are inadequate for a good chunk of people.

Heathcliff without Heathcliff 4/26/2024

Reply in thread

I think that's part of the point. It's someone's job to make the original comic.

Removing the titular protagonist should ruin a work. Removing them here does absolutely nothing. It makes no more or less sense, despite losing a core component. One would hope a comic in widespread syndication would fare better.

At least with memes when they're inevitably bad, it's probably someone fucking around, not a paid professional.

What's something you just learned, that you should have known for a while?

That's a wonderful eggcorn.

I was watching a video talking about how eggcorns are an unusual category of error because they require intelligence and creativity to make. The argument was that the process goes like this:

A new word or phrase is heard, but not understood. The brain makes sense of it using existing vocabulary that has sounds that are close enough. This is accompanied an explanation for why those specific words make sense in this new context.

For example: the original eggcorn was a mishearing of acorn. Egg because it's roughly egg shaped, and corn is sometimes used to describe small objects similar to how grain can be.

All this to say, it's maybe not something to feel dumb about. Your brain did something neat.

YSK that apart from not having a car and voting, the single greatest thing you can do for the climate is simply eating less red meat.

If I'm remembering right, transportation of a food item makes up no more than 2% of the total carbon emissions for that food item.

Eating local produce can have a big impact on the quality and freshness of food, but has comparatively small environmental impacts. It won't make beef greener than beans, no matter where you choose to get each from.

Trump launches fresh attacks on US abortion rights

Even in fairly sensible states and for egg freezing, they may want you to jump through hoops.

As part of the process my significant other apparently had to either tell them I didn't exist, or they'd want to talk to me for permission to freeze her eggs. Even if we were married, they're her eggs not mine. It's completely inappropriate to need to talk to me.

Not OP, but maybe it's better phrased as "white Americans have a limited shared cultural heritage."

Waves of immigration make it hard to tell what of that 5 centuries is actually shared. It's also viewed as tacky to try and lay claim to the bit before your ancestors arrived.

If your ancestors were Irish and Italian immigrants from around 1850, going off about the Mayflower can be viewed as similar putting on airs

Why do Americans measure everything in cups?

It really depends what sort of recipes you're making, but for cooking very loose approximations are often fine.

I often have to convert to weight/mass in order to find out how much of an ingredient to buy. I have no idea how many cups an eggplant is. But once I get it home the recipe might as well say "however much eggplant you have."

If I'm truly off, I will typically scale up the recipe adjusting for the extra meat or vegetable content. I'll more or less assume that 1lb of meat is interchangeable with 1lb of veggies. That's not quite true, in particular with salt.

Your mileage may vary though. Some recipes and ingredients are much more sensitive to deviations.

What weird food or dishes do you eat regularly at home that you would never serve to someone else?

Variant on your dish: bake sweet potato, add cottage cheese and eat immediately. Add sweet or savory seasonings to taste. It's not something I'd bring to share, but it's definitely not something I'll hide. As far as quick and dirty meals, it's reasonably healthy, and probably not the worst suggestion for someone who struggles to cook for themselves.

Actual goblin food: canned black olives between two slices of bread, smush down to prevent them from rolling out.
