What’s the worst date you’ve ever had, and why was it so awful?

A first date was already not going well, and I said I needed to go. He decided that wasn't happening. Ended up having to run away from him, literally, through a park area while wearing heels to reach my car. It was daytime and many people saw what was happening, but no one did a thing to help. But I'm sure if it hadn't been daytime, he wouldn't have "let me" get away after catching me. There were just too many eyes on him.

I wore comfortable shoes I can run in to all first dates after that.

What have you heard people say that screams "I have lived my life in a Westernised bubble and have no idea how the world is" ?

Their attitudes towards elderly parents. I've been told I shouldn't worry about helping them in their old age because they had their chance to work and save for retirement and so it's their responsibility of it's not enough. Except... They didn't. They migrated here with nothing, provided for THEIR parents their whole lives, and did the best they could for me, which left them with next to nothing. Westerners assume everyone boomer aged or so had the same opportunities that their parents had. The nuclear family is also very hands-off about caring for the elderly. That's not how most of the world operates. Plus, it's so sad!

Except that people do a lot of growing in their late 20s and early 30s. Both parties likely changed in personalities, priorities, and experience. The man she rejected years ago is likely not the same man she is attracted to now, nor is she the same person as her priorities have likely changed during that time too.

Bedtime

Our cat kneads my husband's arm when it's bedtime. Right arm, never the left one. It must remain outside the covers and easily accessible, but not moving, until said cat has decided he's done kneading it. This usually takes about ten minutes. No one is allowed to pet the cat while this is happening, or interrupt the kneading in any way.

He's the worst

As much as I like escape rooms, I'd definitely reject the idea of having a first date with a man be somewhere where I'm locked in with him for at least x amount of time and I'm being judged on my actions. All I would be thinking about is "get me out of here!"

I know there are people monitoring the situation but I still would never agree to be so dependent on strangers on a first date.

Maybe go to a board game cafe instead and play some skill based games?

That's it. That's the joke.

I'm a woman and my first IUD insertion really didn't hurt me very much. Uncomfortable, but quick and not too bad.

But when my friends complained about the pain during theirs, I believed them. Because we are all different people with wildly different bodies. I have empathy.

It's not a difficult concept, but I think a lot of people struggle with it. "It was fine for me so anyone who complaints is making it up!"

Anyway, when I went to get my IUD replaced, the second insertion was absolute hell, so now I really get it. But I didn't need to go through it myself to believe people when they say they experience pain. There's so much evidence out there indicating that women experience pain. Is it really so hard to just believe the evidence?

As a woman, and having known many other women, I can promise you that none of what is mentioned is particularly far fetched. It's sad, but we all have multiple stories like this. Almost any woman could put together a similar paragraph of incidents she has personally experienced.

Edit to add: she didn't even name anyone! No one is harmed, except the people who know they should be ashamed of themselves.

What was the most embarrassing thing that you or your friend did while drunk or on drugs?

Reply in thread

You should have probably gone to HR about that. Without an explanation, the behaviour reflects poorly on you for something your coworker did which was not only illegal, but extremely immoral. You do not give someone drugs without their knowledge or consent! Wtf! You know he only took you to the hospital to protect himself. I would not feel safe working in the same space as him.

YSK there is a massive Google Doc of U.S. gynecologists that will tie your tubes without asking about your kids, marital status or age.

I was thirteen years old when I went to the doctor by myself because a cut on my eyelid wasn't healing. I was asked about my birth control, sexual activity, and whether I thought I could be pregnant (after saying I've never had sex) then pushed out of the examination room after NOT having my eye examined at all.

As an adult, I realize now how terrible that was and I would have done something about it if it had happened to me today. But at the time I was so embarrassed and hurt, I just pushed all thought of it away until years later.

What do you feel optimistic about?

The next generation. They seem to be standing up for themselves more, they're speaking up about their issues, they're refusing to just roll over and be obedient little wage slaves. Millenials like me might be beyond hope, but the next generation gives me hope.

Yes but the purpose of the date isn't just to go through the motions of a typical date. It's to get to know each other. I expect a person to suggest a place they like, and that tells me something useful and opens the conversation.
