Automation

Reminds me of an early application of AI where scientists were training an AI to tell the difference between a wolf and a dog. It got really good at it in the training data, but it wasn't working correctly in actual application. So they got the AI to give them a heatmap of which pixels it was using more than any other to determine if a canine is a dog or a wolf and they discovered that the AI wasn't even looking at the animal, it was looking at the surrounding environment. If there was snow on the ground, it said "wolf", otherwise it said "dog".

It's odd that razor sharp teeth is kind of the gold standard for a scary animal, but honestly, getting swallowed whole and slowly digested by stomach acid sounds so much more horrific. I'd so much rather a T-Rex eat me than that.

Baldur's Gate 3 actors reveal the darker side of success fuelled by AI voice cloning [official actress's voice cloned to read very nasty stuff]

Everyone's gonna act like they don't care until scammers are calling your loved ones with your face and your voice and stealing your life savings. Or people are working remote jobs using your voice and face and government ID and you have to pay the taxes for it. Or whatever.

This is a new front of identity theft. The laws that are crafted now are going to decide how awful this new technology will be able to be exploited. You may not care about a voice actor from a video game having her voice stolen, but the impact of decisions surrounding this stuff is going to affect us all at some point very soon.

Original Fallout lead Tim Cain loves the new show, but remains baffled by how 'destructive' fans can act toward 'people who are trying to create things'

I read a review that said the show was "too woke". I haven't seen anything that's woke except that a non-binary character exists and is referred to as "them", and the shopkeepers in Filly seem to be lesbians but it's not explicitly stated. It's annoying seeing the word "woke" but it's also kind of nice that it's easy to spot the dipshits. Anyone using the word "woke" probably sucks big time.

Yeah I was gonna say that. He was famously single his entire life and is speculated to be one of the first historical examples of an asexual and aromantic person.

Lord of the SCIENCE

Elves in LOTR have technically infinite vision because the world used to be flat and illuminated by two glowing trees that resided in Valinor. Because the world was flat, and Elves have essentially perfect vision at any distance, they could actually see things that were on the opposite side of the world.

After Morgoth (aka Melkor, aka the evil god that Sauron worships) and Ungoliant (the mother of Shelob, the spider that nearly kills Frodo) destroyed the trees then the world was made into a globe and Elves infinite vision ability, while still useful, wasn't quite as powerful as before.

Elon Musk condemns the use of electronic voting machines (EVMs) used in general elections in some countries.

Wow. I actually agree with Elon Musk about something for once, what a shock!

Tom Scott has a very good video explaining why electronic voting is terrible all around and it will probably never be secure.

Huh??

They're talking about determining the origin of a sound. They're saying if a sound originates from anywhere on the line of the cone shape it becomes impossible to decipher where it originated accurately. Humans actually have decent vertical echolocation, but just like dogs do when they're trying to vertically echolocate we can also just face the approximate sound origin and tilt our heads to improve echolocation accuracy because our brains use the difference in elevation between our left and right ears to pinpoint the sound's location.

What ridiculous history fact is your favorite?

That North and South Korea maintain a fax line between their countries... which they use almost exclusively to send threats and insults to each other.

Also related to North Korea, the hilarious fact that Dennis Rodman, former NBA player, is so well liked by the Kim family that he's basically a diplomat to North Korea, or at least the one they turn to when things really start going badly.
