What's your superpower?
I have a blurry photographic memory.
What I mean is that I can remember where/what an item looks like but can’t read it. This was especially lame and stressful in nursing school because during a test I could recall exactly where in the textbook or PowerPoint slide the answer was, but couldn’t “read” it from said memory. Stuff like “it was in the yellow shaded an the lower inner quarter of the page, second and third billet points” or “halfway down the page, highlighted in pink, and next to it was a graphic of the Krebs cycle” Not as helpful as you might think.

What's a true fact that is so misleading it's borderline misinformation?
The large percent of traffic accidents that take place within 5 miles of home. Most people only cover a fairly small radius on a day to day basis so it makes sense if there is an accident, it’s close to home and not 80 miles away… just on average of how far how often you drive. Makes it seem like neighbourhoods are more dangerous than highways or something.

Ex patriot is a whitewashing term for immigrant. Because immigrants has a negative connotation so whites had to make up another term so they could differentiate themselves.

How many Lemmy users are non-technical background?
I work in a bakery. I used to be a nurse. But my husband is in tech otherwise I wouldn’t know about Lemmy more than likely.

US Expats(or hopeful expats), what countries do you consider your good home away from home?
The term ExPat has a pretty classist/racist undertone (we are immigrants, but that has a negative connotation so let’s not use that word), but having said my peace on that, Norway. Hands down. Best place. Safe, no one bothers you, etc etc. Taxes are high, but I can start a business without worrying about losing my health insurance so, yeah.

How does this scam work?
No one has a broken webcam in 2026. Especially if ahes supposedly a company CEO, like that is a solved-today problem if it was ever true.
Also unless your dad is also loaded, there’s not a ton of incentive for a successful woman in her early forties to start a romance with someone nearly twice her age, I mean that may sound awful but I’m a woman and that’s just pragmatic. A long distance gamble on a set of old balls? If she’s just in to older men, I’m sure there are plenty in a 10 minute vicinity, she doesn’t need to fw men on the other side of the country.

It's my 54th BD, left a $83K IT job last summer, interviewing at Lowe's tomorrow. Is it weird I'm looking forward to it?
Nah, not crazy. In my view anyway. In 2020 I left nursing in CA making close to $100k and paid zero for actually amazing insurance… to work part time at a bakery for roughly $23/hr in Norway. I was 39.
Sometimes we just have enough and we don’t need to keep chasing the dollars in favor of a simpler, cozier life.

Universal Coronavirus Vaccine Breakthrough: A Single Shot That Could Protect You From COVID, MERS, and the Common Cold

Just an interesting thing to share… I lived in the US until I was 40 and moved to Norway. They just don’t sell “cold remedy” meds here, or at least not even close to the extent the US does. We have sore throat drops, and OTC pain relief. Some cough medicine but it’s pretty weak imo. I suspect this is because the expectation here is that if you’re sick, you take sick time off work. You can rest and recover. Going to the doc to get sick time approved is at most like $20 and if you and your doc have a good relationship, you can do this via email. In the US, you're expected to power through unless contagious and even then, just try to pretend you’re okay.

If you could be any age for the rest of your life, which would you choose?
Anywhere between 28-32. Old enough that people take you mostly seriously but young enough that the world still feels like it’s set up with you specifically in mind.

The reality of life-saving measures in health care, and why a having a DNR (that isn’t a surprise to your loved ones) is so important.

What character from a movie/show/game/anything did you think you were going to hate, but ended up liking?
Hank Schrader - Breaking Bad. It started out from Ep 1 like “oh, this fucking guy 😒”. By the end of the road I was actually rooting for him. His arc was incredible.

What’s an unspoken rule that absolutely everyone should know, but most people clearly don’t?
If you need to stop while walking on a path, inside or outside, step to the side. I can’t believe how many people just abruptly stop to look at their phone, have a conversation, point out something they find interesting… like my guy, would you do that in a car? Fucking GOOOOOO!!
