Electron apps

Spotify using several processes and GB of memory just play some music and browse a library is an abomination. WinAMP did most of that 20 years ago while using a fraction of the resources.

Discord similarly is an affront.

In my experience there’s usually a confluence of individual and institutional failures.

It usually goes like this.

  1. hotshot developers is hired at company with crappy software
  2. hotshot dev pitches a complete rewrite that will solve all issues
  3. complete rewrite is rejected
  4. hotshot dev shoehorns a new architecture and trendy dependencies into the old codebase
  5. hotshot new dev leaves
  6. software is more complex, inconsistent, and still crappy

Tinder Plans to Let AI Scan Your Camera Roll

Tinder scanning my photo library, reading my diary and social media. Then it automatically generates perfect pictures and text for my dating profile. Then an AI bot looks at profiles for me and chats with other AI bots to set up dates. It then automatically adds a date to my calendar and makes a reservation in a restaurant. Nice.

TIL for nearly a thousand years, the ancient world’s most popular and admired comedian was Menander of Athens. Ironically, his work was lost to history until 1952, when a single play was rediscovered

The story of the play concerns a rich young nobleman, Sostratos, who falls in love at first sight with a village peasant girl and decides to marry her. Unfortunately, her father, Knemon, is reclusive, notoriously bad-tempered, and next to impossible to approach. Eventually, after winning over Knemon's stepson Gorgias, showing his own work ethic, and helping to rescue Knemon from the well he has absurdly fallen into, Sostratos wins Knemon over and receives his blessing to marry his daughter. Sostratos also persuades his own father, Kallippides, to bless the betrothal of his own daughter to Gorgias. At the end of the play, Knemon is dragged kicking and screaming by the other characters to join the party for his daughter's wedding. As explained in the prologue, the events of the play are secretly orchestrated by the god Pan who wishes to reward the religious piety of Knemon's daughter and force Knemon, against his will, to experience a redemption arc.

isn't this all roman invaders?

This still exists. Rich and popular people often have guests and friends who want to stay in their good graces to have access to free stuff.

If you have enough rich friends, you can go from one summer house and holiday home to the next and eat at other rich friends. This is much easier if you’re an artist for example and you perform or create a little art for your hosts, or just be young, pretty, and fun.

me rule

Some people fall in love with depressed people or otherwise mentally ill people. Often that’s because they are available, in need, and vulnerable.

A depressed person is usually lonely. If you start a romance with them, they will give you all the attention you want. They will become dependent on you emotionally.

Mentally ill people are prime victim material for narcissists.
