stick

Well, does it?

I just realized there is an entire continent where there are no trees, and thus no sticks.

And it isnt a small continent either. it is larger than all of Europe and also larger than Australia. We arent talking about an island or archipelago or even some random landlocked desert. It is a continent.

the fact that there are no sticks that naturally occur there at all... it confuses and concerns me.

This is deeply unsettling to me.

A dramatic rise in pregnant women dying in Texas after abortion ban

Please support Elevated Access in any way you can. Even if you are not a pilot or know jack shit about general aviation, you can help. Donate to them or reach out and drive a friend to a local ga airport. Its probably outside of your hometown. Ill land on a dirt strip to help.

I personally fly for them. Many pilots in texas do. We can cross state borders to get texas women the care they need and deserve. Colorado or new mexico doesnt have to be a ten hour drive. Ken Paxton and his ilk want to shut down the state highways to stop pro choice in Texas, but they cant stop federal airways.

Trump pardons Ross Ulbricht, founder of Silk Road drug marketplace

Because he needed the libertarian vote this time in order to win. Its a very cheap promise that guarantees votes and doesnt alienate anyone that doesnt care. Honestly, the fact that he followed through suprises me.

"But why didnt he need the libertarian vote in 16?"

Because he never intended to win the first time. The first run was a fluke. He wanted to play victim and run the media circuit for profit.

The Republican-controlled US government has decided to impose a 25% tax on American imports of goods from Canada

You guys in canada should 100% support retaliatory tariffs. Fire them at us as hard as you can. Make us a pariah.

We fucked around. We should find out. We couldnt learn from round one of trump. We couldnt learn from watching the train wreck that was brexit. If you dont quid pro quo. If you capitulate. We will not learn our lesson.

Teach us and do not make our mistakes.

Susan Crawford wins Wisconsin Supreme Court race, defying Elon Musk

Reply in thread

Yeah my internet history alone would eliminate me from that running.

The winners are "pre selected". Thats how his bullshit workaround works. Its been admitted. But for the uninformed, it sounds like a lottery.

It isnt.

even if a communist or anarchist or whatever tried to play the game and if it were a true lottery, you would be committing a far worse disservice by keeping quiet at this point.

Stay quiet and maybe get a million. Its the democrat way if you look at our current dem politicians... do you really want to be like them right now?

One Cigarette Takes 20 Minutes Off Your Life Expectancy, According to New Study

While i dont doubt it, i had an observation about this fact a long time ago.

I was on a blind date years ago, and was a pack a day smoker. We eat dinner, have dessert and coffee, and stepping outside, i light up a smoke.

"You know those things are bad for you, right?"

"I know, its a terrible habit"

" do you ever wish you had never picked up the first one? It will kill you eventually..."

I took a drag. Held it, and exhaled.

"No. No i dont think i regret it at all"

She tilted her head like a puppy does when you whistle a high pitch with no prompt. It was confusion. She didnt understand. I stomped out my cigarette. We started walking.

"If i think about it, the chance encounters ive had on a balcony, or outside a random doorway with a stranger. conversation with no precontext or preconceptions. Just two people enjoying a thing that will eventually kill them. Theres something beautiful about that"

She still didnt get it.

"Those moments, and the friendships that resulted. They have already saved my life. Times over probably. So a few hours, or days at the end, in comparison to the things that i built off of those little moments, in the moment, where its just people and their habit...

I dont think i would change it"

The date went nowhere. There wasnt really a spark to begin with. It wasnt a big deal. Never saw her again.

But the friend that set her up with me, the one who i met by chance smoking in a backyard at a party. Shes still my friend. We talk once a week, if not more.

Her and her wife are expecting their first child this spring. I was at her dads funeral this fall. Lung cancer. He will never meet his grandson.

Neither of us smoke now. But, despite it all. I do not regret starting with that first smoke. Without that friendship, i would never have made it this far.

But in acknowledging that fact, there is a cost.

Theres always a a cost. But i value the time i traded, and i personally, have no regrets.

New bird flu variant found in Nevada dairy cows has experts sounding alarms: ‘We have never been closer to a pandemic from this virus’

As a dairy farmer myself, im paying extreem attention to all of this. Ive been paying attention to it since we found out about it a year ago. Our response has been absolute garbage and ill be one of the first to call out our absolutely shitty response. Im on the front lines right now. We have not dealt with this problem with the seriousness and attention it deserves.

That being said, this comment chain feels wierd. Like, the discourse im seeing is setting off real red flags right now for me. Im not so sure that lemmy is as secure as i expected it to be.

Im still here and will stay here, but something doesnt feel right about our conversation in this thread right now.

Trump administration fires top US general and Navy chief in unprecedented purge of military leadership

You know. Its interesting. Like... really interesting. And sobering.

Reading history books about the rise of the nazis and the reich, and you ask yourself, "how could they have not known what was going on?" and "how could they let these things happen?" What were they doing just standing around? Why did they let this happen?

I understand that history is written by the victors. I understand that there is so much we will never know. There is nuance and circumstance and so many things that snowball into the most terrible things.

But now... im starting to understand the feeling of powerlessness now. The inability to change the machines that are in motion. The overwhelming dread.

I could make generalizations of the people of germany in the 1930s. But it would be disingenuous. And unnecessary. It feels like they are my neighbors now in 2025. They are angry, or apathetic, or ignorant. And the machine and history does not care about them in the slightest. History will be written by the winner and we are all going to be a broad generalization of what happens next. Your experiences will be written off as a success for the new order, or as a failure. If it is written at all.

History doesnt teach you to dwell on the minutiae and routines of the common man. It doesnt teach you that, despite everything you may do or what you believe, or how much you loathe the actions of your leaders, that you have so little sway. That you are powerless and ineffective.

I feel that and understand that now.

History books in school taught us the wrong lesson i think. But i dont think that we can learn this experience from a book or documentary. If it could, we would not be repeating it now.

Elon Musk asks if America should 'liberate the people of Britain' in tirade against UK government

Reply in thread

He sounds like hes trying to demo what he wants to happen in other places. Normalise the conversation, break the standards. If its part of the dialogue now, it isnt that far fetched if it happens in the future. "We can do it too" "they did it first"

Its not subtle. Its a game plan. Its disgusting, but that is exactly whats happening. Same as when he said that the king of england should dissolve parliament. That wont happen, but saying it out loud unfortunately gives it merit. If its part of the conversation, its going to have opinions. Opinions that used to be only said in shadows, can now be said in public. And then they can be pointed to as justification.
