It's not what they want to know about, it's what they find easy to talk about. They're topics that everyone has some connection with, and with which you're unlikely to cause a significant disagreement by bringing it up. You start with the easy stuff, and then use whatever comes up as a bridge to more meaningful conversation.

Cyclists Break Far Fewer Road Rules Than Motorists, Finds New Video Study

People like to think that bicyclists are breaking laws all the time because they assume that bicycles must be treated as either cars or pedestrians. They are, in fact, a secret third thing with their own set of laws. Motorists don't know those laws because they have no reason to look them up. It's easier to just assume that the bicycle on the road/on the sidewalk/not stopping for the stop sign must be breaking the law because it would be illegal for a car to do it.

After Security Scare, Trump Demands Approval for His White House Ballroom

Reply in thread

The security people at the event did do their jobs. Someone attempted to commit a violent act, was immediately identified as a threat, and was arrested with no deaths and one minor injury. The attacker didn't get anywhere close to his intended targets because security stopped him so quickly. If anything, this shows how completely unnecessary his stupid armored ballroom would be because the event security was 100% capable of stopping an attacker.

JD Vance Confirms Iran Will Get Jaw-Dropping Sum Under Trump Deal

It doesn't matter how much they say they're going to pay. We're just going to get another turn of the wheel: we'll be right on the cusp of a deal, then Israel will murder a few thousand people and literally blow the deal up. The war continues but we're still in a ceasefire, the Straight is open but nobody's allowed through, Iran's military capabilities have been completely destroyed but they're still launching missiles. Give it two more weeks and we'll be right on the cusp of a deal with another jaw-dropping offer for Iran that won't matter because they know we'll just turn the wheel again.
