One of Reddit’s biggest communities is suggesting users move to Discord
I’m glad they’re leaving the old site, but Discord serves different purposes and isn’t a replacement. I’d recommend they start a Lemmy community.

Good lord they are only 11 years old. Who cares what bathroom they use.

Jamie Dimon says employees can go work somewhere else if they don't like long commutes into the office, thinks remote work doesn't cut it
“We're not going to make that decision because we're pandering to employees”
Is there such a thing as “pandering to employees”? The employees are doing the real work to keep the company going, while Dimon’s work apparently includes appearing on news stations ridiculing said employees.
Hopefully the next headline we hear about J.P. Morgan will be a mass voluntary attrition.

Almost broke 2.5 million daily total users on Lemmy in the last 24 hours.
Good to see, but as with all posts like this, it’s important to note that the really important number is “Active Users” That number has gone up significantly as well, just not as fast as number of accounts.

White House urges developers to dump C and C++
I’m not sure what to think about this. It’s bizarre, the White House making any recommendations on programming languages.
They’re definitely not seen as an authority in this field. Why would anyone care what recommendation they make? And so why make one at all?

Anon is a favorite angel
Yeah I remember being taught in church about forgiveness and love. And then taught about Lucifer being kicked out to hell forever, no chance of redemption. It didn’t make sense to me, even as a kid. I think I asked a Sunday school teacher about it and got a nonsensical rationalization.

Lemmy's active users (content creators) see impressive 35% growth so far in July
Holy smokes! Honestly I don’t know if we have or will make much of a dent in r*ddit, but at this point I don’t care. We’re building a new enthusiastic community and doing it fast. It’s a lot of fun.

The longer this goes on, the more convinced I am that this will actually damage Reddit significantly.

Freenom gives away domains, many of which are used by phishers and other bad actors. Meta is suing them for not being responsive to their complaints about this. And I guess the injury inflicted on their users by phishers.

Thank you as always for the transparency. This instance is going to be the most targeted because of its size. Y’all dealing with this is hard but you’re going to figure things out that will help the other instances.

Agreed. I know that many moderators around here have never modded before, and no doubt some admins have not dealt with growth on this scale. Good job y'all!

X Purges Prominent Journalists, Leftists With No Explanation
Musk can do whatever he wants, keeping Twitter (sorry, X, yuck) alive with billions that are peanuts to him. This news isn’t a surprise to me. He talked big about free speech, but it was just talk.

Reddit Will License Its Data to Train LLMs, So We Made a Firefox Extension That Lets You Replace Your Comments With Any (Non-Copyrighted) Text
If one wanted to really screw the AI, I’d replace each post/comment with nonsense generated by ChatGPT itself on a higher-than-normal temperature setting. AI would be training on its own generated content, and out of context as well.

Is Lemmy more likely to succeed than Voat? Why or why not?
Reply in thread
I would think so. The people who were attracted to Voat could always migrate to Lemmy and host on their own instance (I’d be in favor of blocking them if their rhetoric becomes hateful, however).
