Texas offers Donald Trump huge ranch for mass deportation plan

Interesting. When the topic is punishment, there are plenty of resources. When the topic is helping people, it's "who's footing the bill for that?!" I never saw a headline about a 1400 acre ranch being offered up to house people in poverty, but it gets offered up to imprison people with the "wrong" names and skin color. And they have the audacity to parade out "America first!" as a slogan to prioritize helping Americans before worrying about solving problems around the world.

Punishing people for allegedly coming here illegally will do nothing to help me. Them allegedly having come here illegally never hurt me. Help people who have been unhoused or addicted to harmful substances or traumatized by abuse to get to a place where that can be productive in our society. That would obviously help them, and then they would be able to help their communities. It's complicated and it's difficult, but it's work worth doing. I'm tired of lazy politicians and leaders looking for quick and easy solutions to fabricated problems so they can maximize the number of boxes that get checked. And that's a generous read on it. The reality is that they're greedy whores accepting money and power in exchange for punishing certain people while rewarding certain companies.

Republican politicians don't give a flying fuck about you and yours.

Fifa suspends Luis Rubiales from all football-related activity over Hermoso kiss

I'm surprised by this. Pleasantly surprised. This is a slap on the wrist for show, but it's more than the nothing I was expecting.

I'd be pretty pissed if somebody like my regional manager grabbed my head and kissed my lips because I did well at my job. Even moreso if it were extremely public and there were no repercussions for him. Extremely pissed off if it happened to be in a monopolized industry where my company stands alone and I could be blacklisted for not being okay with the kiss. This wasn't just shitty for women's soccer, and it wasn't even just shitty for women; this was shitty for every person who has felt pressured to choose between themselves and pleasing somebody who holds power in some regard. Whether it's parents, partners, coaches, teachers, bosses, etc, that power is used to exploit the comfort and safety of millions every day, so it's really important that such a public instance of it be taken seriously.

What is your least favourite acronym?

As a kid, I was in the room at one point while my mom was watching some TV show, maybe law and order or something similar. I heard somebody letting somebody else know (verbally) the details of some victim and described the cause of injury or death or whatever as "GSW". I asked my mom what GSW meant. She said "gun shot wound". I said that that couldn't possibly be right, and she was curious why. I said because "gun shot wound" is 3 syllables and "GSW" is 5; it's literally quicker to say the full thing.

So yeah, GSW is fucking stupid when said aloud, and even me as a dumbass child knew that.

"but- But- inflation go brrrr 🥺👉👈"

Reply in thread

I was talking with a coworker the other day and they were talking about how raising minimum wage causes inflation because businesses will raise prices to offset to rise in labor costs. I asked if he thought inflation had gotten bad in the past 5ish years in particular. He said of course. I said well federal minimum wage hasn't risen since 2009, which was 15 years ago, so it sounds like inflation is gonna happen regardless of wages and is based on the capitalistic goal of infinite growth, so maybe we should raise minimum wage so lower income people have a shot at affording basic necessities.

He just said no, then inflation just would've been worse. It's maddening.

What are some underrated yet well paid jobs that one should consider and why ?

I have been working in power plants for over ten years. Entry level plant operators can make six figures with a high school diploma. At a decent plant, you'll be balls to the wall busy on 5-10% of your shifts, pretty steady with general routine stuff that's mostly just confirming that shit is normal 80% of the time, and the remaining 10% is in outages which can vary between busting your ass and waiting around but it's rough either way because you might be working every day for a few weeks. Every plant I've been to does 12 hour shifts with pretty frequent changes between days and nights, which is by far the worst part. You'll have an easier time getting in and moving up if you are pretty good with STEM stuff, but you're fine if you passed honors physics in high school. V=IR and PV=nRT will get you really far. Spatial reasoning skills are also really helpful.

I'm at a combined cycle natural gas plant where I started as an outside operator almost 3 years ago at $39.80/hour and am now a ZLD water treatment operator in the same plant at $52/hour; control room operators start at about $60/hour here. I had a really shitty 12 hour shift today so I earned every dime of that wage, but sometimes it's only like 4-6 hours of work in a 12 hour shift and a bunch of reading or YouTube in between while monitoring everything. Even the tough shifts are kinda good sometimes because I get to work the puzzle part of my brain.

Don’t ever hand your phone to the cops

Reply in thread

This. You have rights, but the police will lie, cheat, and steal their way into getting whatever they want, especially when what they want is for you to waive your rights.

When stopped by the police (in America), you say "I invoke my fifth amendment right to not answer questions and I don't consent to any searches and seizures. Am I being detained or am I free to go?" That question starts a clock for what is a reasonable amount of time to detain you for their investigation because you've made it clear that you'd like to leave as soon as you're legally allowed to.

As for any kind of force, just stay silent and unthreatening. They're gonna do what they're gonna do, and anything you do can be used as rationalization for escalation, which they really seem to fucking love. Be polite when you do choose to speak. Obey lawful commands and let them arrest you if that's what they're gonna do. You don't fight armed thugs in the street, you fight them in court. File complaints and sue when they violate your rights and cause undue harm. Swinging at them or shouting in their face is how you get shot. Let their ego win the moment and then administratively destroy their career and life later on.

I'm also not a lawyer, but this is what any half decent lawyer would tell you to do. Just shut the fuck up (but invoke your right to shut the fuck up or your silence can actually be used against you) and be as passive as possible so your lawyer has a slam dunk case getting your charges dropped and/or suing the everloving fuck out of them, hopefully nullifying their qualified immunity in the process. Nothing you do or say to the police can help you, but it sure as shit will be used against you. Even things you think are innocuous can corroborate that you're who they're looking for, so just shut the fuck up.

'You deceived millions of us!': Trump fans tell him they're outraged over Navy pick

Reply in thread

This is the most terrifying part. They say that he's "liberated" now, but to me that just means he has nothing to lose. Assuming he lives past January 2029, he has nothing to lose and everything to gain by throwing all resources into staying in power. He has no reason to give a fuck about whether anything he does or says is "popular" once he's sworn in. There will be zero consequences for anything until he leaves office, if he leaves office.

The dumb motherfucker proved that somebody with the mentality of a six year old can win the US presidency and then do whatever the fuck he wants, and he'll never face a single, real, goddamn consequence. I am ashamed of my country, and it's horribly depressing how many people died serving our military just to have this flag-hugging dipshit get to be the commander in chief, and he'll sell out to the highest bidders and get several more killed.

We're fucked, and only a small fraction of his worshipers are even beginning to see that. And when the shit hits their fan specifically, most of them will find a way to blame somebody else, probably somebody who is brown and/or has a vagina. Most of these incurious assholes will line up for whatever strong daddy negs them hard enough, and right now that's trump, and there will be a new strong daddy successor to tell them what to do and who to love and how to dress. Strong daddy hurts you and controls you, but at least you don't have to make decisions for yourself when you have strong daddy there to tell you what to think.

Fucking pathetic.

Trump’s Most Unhinged Plans for His Second Term

Reply in thread

It's fair to criticize Biden for not being better than he is but it's fucking braindead, bordering on parody to suggest that Biden isn't better than Trump. Only complete morons or people that aren't paying attention would suggest such a thing, so I'll just give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you aren't aware of what Biden has gotten done in his first two years.

I can't stand that he's old, he fucked over rail workers, he's still supporting Israel in their genocidal quest, and he has increased funding for police, but it's hyperbolic af to say he's just as fascist as trump, the poster child of American fascism. Dude literally attempted to overthrow democracy to stay in power. "The boss is not going to leave under any circumstances. We are just going to stay in power."

The children yearn for the mines

Reply in thread

God forbid their parents be paid well enough that these children are allowed to have a childhood before having to work 40+ years until they die chasing retirement. Kids are already in school for like 35 hours per week plus they have homework and chores. When are they supposed to play with toys, see friends, go outside, or participate in clubs or team sports or whatever they might be interested in?

Only a few decades ago it was normal for a single income to provide for a family, including owning a home and taking vacations. Then both parents started having to work. Now it's rare for a couple even without kids to be able to buy a house. And you're seriously defending the normalization of working parents sending their kids to work?! Fuck that. This is third world country shit that we used to adopt refugee children from, and now we're doing it to our own kids.
