This list feel a little dated. On the top of my head I'd add "Visual Studio Code" for programming, Cakewalk for music composition, and Davinci Resolve for video editing.

I imagine it lurking in the shadows, waiting to strike
It would be stupid, but very funny if someone created a YouTube bot for Piped links...

Wait, what? $900 to see Beyonce? How is that justified? Or even possible?

... then I think this isn't the community for you. Home automation is for, you know, automating our homes: Not because it's the only way, but because it's the EASY way.
This is just an extension based on the same reason for your TV having a remote, your car (probably) has an automatic gearbox, your smart phone does much you needed a computer to do back in the days, etc.
Convenience is king.

There's More to the Reddit Meltdown Than Meets the Eye
What's the alternative? Should we all stop discussing in favor of writing articles on Medium?
"The forum" as a medium has a well-fundamented place on the web in 2023, 2030 and 2078, I'm not worried about that.

Smart-homes: The future, or harmful?
I've had a smart home for the last 15 years, and now can't live without it. Use a protocol like Z-wave or Zigbee and you won't have to connect your home to the internet for basic operations like lights and heating/cooling.
If you find Home Assistant too intimidating, then I would suggest HomeSeer. It's extremely stable, and easy to use, and you could just let it run for years. That being said Home Assistant has gotten much better in the last couple of years.
For some things you will need internett access, there's just no way around it. We are in a world that "make a product smart" is the same as "make an app", and misc. equipment does not have local access. It it stupid? Yes. Is it annoying? Yes. I tend to buy the most integrate able products available to vote with my wallet.

2 authors say OpenAI 'ingested' their books to train ChatGPT. Now they're suing, and a 'wave' of similar court cases may follow.
Reply in thread
ChatGPT could have read 1000 other summaries of the book, it doesn't have to read the actual book to make a summary. It can just rewrite don't out the old ones.

What are y'all's all time favourite game OSTs?
In the beginning it was Day of the Tentacle and Transport Tycoon. For the longest time it was Red Dead Redemption 1 and then 2.
Then suddenly Desperados III came along and is so far winning.
