Lemmy, what do you call users of Lemmy?

I like lemmings but it might be a bit derogatory. Even with that I still think it's better than 'redditors', which always sounded/looked goofy to me.

Any ideas? What do we call Lemmy users?

My current vote is for lemmings. I think it's cute.

Given the rodent theming, lemmings is appropriate. It's also slightly self-deprecating, which is a plus when it comes to community monikers.

Most of the people migrating from Reddit wouldn’t have much of a problem with self-depreciation.

If you're on reddit, you're not ok

/j, but it feels true. The reddit stereotype

have a great day and be kind! :D

More poetic themes via Wikipedia “Lemmings also appear in Arthur C. Clarke's 1953 short story "The Possessed", where their suicidal urges are attributed to the lingering consciousness of an alien group mind, which had inhabited the species in the prehistoric past.”

The past mascot was an alien

Huh. and i thought it was named after the guy from motorhead

Pretty sure those lemmings not having a choice wasn't apocryphal...

lemmy.world

I suppose not, and like them we’re being practically pushed off the cliff into a new experience. More fitting than ever.

3
lemmy.world

Well, I hope that analogy isn't very accurate since the "new experience" those lemmings were pushed into didn't end well for the poor wee creatures.

1

with the official client being called Jerboa I think we all agreed that the small rodent analogy was intended from the start

6

Yes, if we're lemmings surely we should be running on the wheel.

10

Is that what that mouse is supposed to be? I thought it was a tattoo.

I agree with everyone here on this, Lemmings is appropriate. Especially since most of the community likes it, I think choosing something that the community vibes with is important.

!!Leeemmings!! !!Leeemmings!!

I'm actually on kbin but I would consider changing to lemmy if i get to be a lemming.

11

My gosh, I hate "lemmings" because of the connotation that we're just here because everyone else is.

But you're right. A term that folks can generally vibe with is really important.

I think Lemmings is great because it's not something any PR team would approve of. It feels completely unincorporated.

They only commit unlife if you don't succesfully guide them to the next level.

13

If it makes you feel better, lemmings don't actually commit suicide like you're imagining and Disney made it all up. They basically threw lemmings off a cliff to get the footage they wanted.

There's actually a Lemmy app on called Lemmur. I downloaded it but it doesn't seem to be working at the moment.

1

I vote for lemmons, because the Walt Disney-inspired insults could get very tiresome.

5

I loke lemmings, I think it's a good reminder about how the dangers of letting any platform influence you too much.

lemming would be pretty ok for me too. I am to uncreative to come up with another name lol. maybe lemmys?

+1 for lemming. It just feels really appropriate, and who doesn't like lemmings? They're adorable!

16

yeah, they are kinda cute. i think they are a bit overlooked as far as animals go. So why not? Maybe there could be a Lemmy icon :)

We could go with federators as we are now part of the fediverse, then we can also include mastodonians

20

that makes us sound like a fallout faction, but specifically one from the first two games

I tried transforming the word Lemmy in the same way as demonyms for countries ending in Y just to see how it'd shake out.

Anything calling to anyone? 😅

Germany -> Germans -> Lemmans

Para/Uruguay -> Para/Uruguayans -> Lemmyans

Muscovy -> Muscovites -> Lemmites

Hungary -> Hungarians -> Lemmians

Norway -> Norwegians -> Lemmegians?

Turkey -> Turks? -> Lemms?

I saw someone use "Lemmurs" the other day and I'm sticking with that pending a better idea.

13

Seconding Lemmur rhymes with Lemmer of Christine Lemmer-Webber, one of the authors of the ActivityPub protocol

2

I think the hivemind has already spoken, but damn, I wish it was Lemons.

I've always been opposed to this kind of branding. Users are users, posts are posts, getting heavy into branding is always a bad sign to me.

I totally get where you're coming from but I think humanity's tribal nature makes us want to identify with something on the platform we're on.. Some type of name that defines all of us.

7

It also makes it more accessible if the language is consistent. I remember when I learned the reddit-specific terms like sub, subreddit, redditor, OP and so on. They seem obvious in hindsight, but some of them were not when I had no idea. Now imagine for each term, there would be multiple synonyms. The feeling of "I have no firm understanding of what they are talking about" would last longer, which isn't exactly a pleasant experience for newcomers.

1

I agree to the extent that, if nicknames develop they should organically do so, and not be forced because "the other guys are doing it."

1

Some old (wrong) thing about lemmings running off a cliff.

Turns out the nature photographers drove the lemmings off a cliff.

9

I also agreed with lemmings on a previous post. Coming from Reddit, self deprecating is the least of my worries 🤣

Us few subscribers to c/Australia will unquestionably be known as 'Lemingtons' from here on out.

9

Not a fan of lemmings, since everything we know about them in popular culture is incorrect - they don't commit mass suicide - and is suicide really the image we want for ourselves? @Lemminary has the right idea.

I didn't think that about lemmings

4

Asking the important questions! I won't deny this has already crossed my mind. I do think lemmings sounds like the best option.

6

Lemmites (pronounced Leh-Mites) could be one of the contenders. One can also go about saying, “Lemmites here have been nothing but kind ….” or something like, “A lemmite suggested me this website!

Lemurians, it is unique and isn't animal related.

I like this one too. It evokes a land of legend that will one day emerge from the sea.
