Reddit is not so fun anymore, RIP RIF

Goodbye RIF, my preferred app from the before times.

I see a lot of developers coming over to Lemmy, which is great, but I'll throw out that I've been on Jerboa since maybe my second or third day on Lemmy and I really like it. A little different than RIF, but easy and straight forward to use. Give it a try if you haven't already!

A very useful guide to buying gelato from a Italian local

I'm not sure she's correct about milk melting faster than cream or that the "deflates" if you whip too much air into it.

One of the three main differences between the ice cream and gelato is air content. ice cream has more air and doesn't loose it over night; it would be bubbly too with all the air escaping. Gelato melts quicker because it is served 10 to 15 degrees F warmer than ice cream (this main differences).

Low air content and warmer temp is why gelato is smoother.

Source: My Italian wife and I have had long discussions and Internet searches on the finer points of this topic. I'm not an expert, I could be wrong.

In 250 million years, a single supercontinent will form, wiping out nearly all mammals: Modeling study

I'm a bit doubtful of the animation they show in the article. There are active continental rift zones in East Africa and Asia, at lake Baikal, which doesn't show any movement during the animation. The San Andreas fault isn't shown having any movement in the animation either. Additionally, Europe and Africa are currently moving away from North and South America, but change direction in the animation so the four continents come together without explanation of data suggesting the direction reversal.

It seems like this is a "what if?" sort of thought experiment as opposed to based on actual data. I mean, even current direction of plates could change tomorrow in an unpredictable way, so there's no knowing either way.

Not that it really matters in any case.

Lemmy active users grew by an astounding 1600% in June

My issue was I didn't know where to go to sign up. It took me a little time to understand the fediverse, then I had to figure out what instance I should sign up for. After that I started hearing some instances weren't accepting new accounts but didn't know if that was a thing everywhere or only one instance. I consider myself above average compared to the general public when it comes to my capabilities with the Internet and computer tech in general, it's never taken me days to understand stand how to sign up for a website like this before.

It does seem simple now that I'm here and understand things better. It's just a learning curve; this is unique to any website\forum\whatever I've played with before.

Chat GPT

I thought "chat" with a hard "t" in French meant "piss", cat is pronounced "cha". I was told this by a French speaker when I was talking about a "chat noir" poster, using a hard "t" and they said "you're sayong black piss! The "t" is silent for cat".

Can anyone confirm? I feel this is important for this post, "chat gpt" could mean "piss, I farted"

Looking for help with placing my house

Are there minimum setbacks from the property line? 72' long house should fit the 100' width unless the setback is pretty large. What are you having trouble deciding?

If you want, and can, orient the house N-S, you only need to decide how big you want the front and back yard to be. What's the view to the west? I can't imagine you'd want to BBQ looking at your neighbors to the east even if you house was all the way on the west side of the property. Maybe you want the house more to the east and have a nice back yard patio to look into the desert (I'm guessing), maybe put in a pool someday (is there enough water in NM for a pool? Lol)? You don't want a pool on the street side or near your neighbors.

You could could angle the house if you can't fit it into the 100' width in a N-S orientation, but I would orient it in the NE\SW so the morning sun hits the long side of the house and the evening\setting sun has a smaller profile to hit.
