[META] Are paid for, closed source projects, being advertised on this community, appropriate?

If it's software that is self hosted and might be useful, I'm okay with it. We have the vote up/down to sort the wheat from the chaff. And worse case the comments can rip it apart and offer alteratives.

If it's foss or whatever abso-fucking-lutely. I love reading about new things. I first learned of Orca Slicer in a post about Bambu Slicer on 3d printing community. I'm also all for supporting solo devs. I feel that closed source is a cromulent option that has been abused by corporations. But hey, like this is just, like my opinion dude!

The initial post might be spam, but it's the discussion where the meat and potatoes live. Now, reposts of the same product (unless it's to show off major new features like once a year) I do draw the line at.

Full transparency, I'm not super active in this community, but I love reading the stuff here.

Remember: the SUX 3141 Ti is 60% slower than the SUX 3141 Xt. because it's 5 years older and has no components in common.

Thousand times this. For actual builders that care about the nuance it all probably makes sense but then there is me over here looking at pre-builts wondering why the fuck are two seemingly identical machines have a $500 difference between them.

I'm spending so much time pouring through spec sheets to find "oh the non-z version discombobulator means this cheaper one is gonna be trash in three years when I can afford to upgrade to a 6megadong tri-actor unit".

I'm in this weird state of to cheap to buy a Mac and can't be arsed to build my own.

This is a major Life Pro Tip

Growing up we had a walk in shower, the way it was setup there was no way to reach in and not get hit by cold water. Especially a short kid with short arms, you were getting a full blast cold water trying to go "out" of the shower. The tap was the push-pull type and very difficult to modulate so limiting to low pressure trickle was basically a game of russian roulette. The best I could do was hug the wall and let it only get whatever corner of my body I wanted to sacrifice to temporary hypothermia that morning.

Yup, as long as the current staff (by and large) are still at the helm of the Ars orbiting HQ, I'll continue to go there. I've lost too many other good tech news sites in the last decade, I can't lose another one.

The rest of Conde Nast is hot garbage.

No One Was Around To Collect Life Is Strange: Double Exposure's Award For Social Impact Following Layoffs

At the marketing circle jerk that is the other game awards, I would expect this. At the Game goddamn developers choice awards, yeah, show some support for the people. OR, make the effort to reach out to the people that made the game - some of them were actually at the GDC! It's not like they dropped off the face of the earth after being laid off.

Imagine a best actor award at the Oscars not having anyone come up because the actor left Miramax to join Universal afterwards - but the fucking guy is sitting in the audience.

What an embarrassment.

Worst UI Any% Speedrun

I'm not seeing "Amazon" or the plethora of online shopping stores that have followed in its footprint of complete and utter shit. To this day, I can't understand how Amazon became so big with a user interface so fucking awful but goes to show it doesn't actually fucking matter.

Considering that LLMs are trained on the whole of the internet, it's kind of amazing that they don't talk back to you like a condescending, smug asshole

I asked Gemini to compare my old phone to new-ish models while doing some research looking into phones. And I quote: "The [redacted] is a dinosaur. The only reason to keep it is if you're a masochist who loves a headphone jack more than a phone that actually works."

Yeah, fuck LLM's. This phone is perfectly cromulent. It pissed me off so much I decided to not buy a new phone that day.
