How active is Lemmy now?

Remember when forums would be super active with, like, 500 users?

"Millions of users" is a vanity stat. The critical mass needed to keep a discussion group alive is actually quite small -- assuming you're interested in, you know, discussing things. So, how active "Lemmy" is is entirely dependent on which topics you're interested in.

Just curious

A bridge isn't really necessary. Both Lemmy and Pixelfed use the same communication protocol. Lemmy just doesn't let you follow users, and PixelFed is a user-based, rather than group-based, program.

If you want to follow both groups and users, you should just use a site that's running software that supports that. Mbin, or nodeBB, or something.

‘We will be your human shields’: Why unions are showing up in force to support the U of T pro-Palestinian protest encampment

Reply in thread

If the police show up, and the labour unions actually stand off against them, the photos alone could spark a significant social movement. One of the things that labour has failed to show for, oh, like 2 generations now is that the movement is willing to actually help people more generally, being mostly content to limit itself to helping its membership.

Engaging publicly in a big way has the potential, at least, to be a huge deal.

D&D Co-Creator Gary Gygax was Sexist. Talking about it is Key to Preserving His Legacy.

No, this isn't the casual sexism of the 70s. This is deliberate, rabid, reactionary misogyny that he felt OK to publicly publish:

I thought perhaps these folks were right and considered adding women in the ‘Raping and Pillaging[’] section, in the ‘Whores and Tavern Wenches’ chapter, the special magical part dealing with ‘Hags and Crones’, and thought perhaps of adding an appendix on ‘Medieval Harems, Slave Girls, and Going Viking’.

That's specific, and directed hatred. Dude was engaging in standard Incel bullshit.

Study: Increasing minimum wage does not reduce jobs

Reply in thread

corporate profits decrease very slightly

This is the thing that people will reflexively point to, but this:

quality of life increases

This is the real issue. If quality of life increases, workers are less desperate, and are less willing to put up with their employers BS. Moreover, if other jobs are also paying a living wage, it's much easier to quit.

We have seen, over and over, that businesses are willing to spend money to exert control over workers. They'll do it even if it means a decline in profits, or even in revenue. Because at the end of the day, if you have your needs met, any money left over is just power, and power is meant to be used to control others.

Carney’s Message to the World: The Rules No Longer Protect You | The Walrus

Reply in thread

I wish he was less of a, you know, investor capitalist, but his take on international relations is a wonder to behold. This speech basically boiled down to his election speeches, calling out the US, and telling the world that the Big Fish are nobody's friend, and that the rest of us need to partner up and stop competing with each other to simp for the Americans.

He basically declared that the American Empire is over, and we're done acting as a vassal state.

Fucking wild. I never thought I'd live to see the day.

Claims in 'Duty To Warn' Letter to Harris Alleging Compromised Election Are Misleading

Reply in thread

Yup. They had a hook with Walz and the 'weird' talking points. That seemed to really resonate with the Republicans and made them go out of their way to highlight out weird they were.

Then they pivoted to try and win Republicans. And... they died.

'Weird' probably wouldn't have won them the election or anything, but it was working. It could have been paired with good, short talking points about helping people, and Walz is a good enough, and genuine enough (or at least appears to be so) guy to really sell those talking points in a way that didn't feel pandering or cynical.

But they really wanted that right-wing vote. It's like right-wingers telling the Democrats that they'll never vote for them just makes the Dems want to win them over that much more.

It's wild.

US congress to vote on prohibiting funds for the Armed Forces from invading or seizing territory in Canada/Panama/Greenland

Reply in thread

That's the point. Opposition bills in the US are often put forth to force members of the majority party to publicly vote against it, so that there is public record of their position on things.

It's an easy system to game, too, since it's trivially easy to include a poisoned pill in the bill that will push the members to reject it.
