One of the reasons they only teach whitewashed history at school

ITT:

Everyone thinking that the only two options are being quiet or being violent.

Strikes are currently making those in power very uncomfortable, and are resulting in genuine progress for workers.

In my area, people camping out in thousand year old trees has protected them time and again from being illegally logged.

Black Lives Matter protests were loud and made the powerful uncomfortable, and despite media narratives it wasn't "violent protesters" that made the powerful uncomfortable.

It is true that any form of protest that is loud and inconveniencing enough to actually be productive will be met with state violence.

It's also true that some working for progress do use violence. But make no mistake, it's not guns that made those in power uncomfortable when it came to Malcom X and the Black Panthers.

The most radical and intimidating (to those in power) things the Black Panthers did were to give free food to schoolchildren, and free healthcare at their People’s Free Medical Clinics.

Building community and mutual aid is subversive.

Building community and mutual aid makes those in power uncomfortable.

Development of the Wayland specification and multiple Wayland compositors is funded by the X.org foundation, and done largely by current and former Xorg developers / maintainers.

So it still works!

For those who work in companies that subscribe users to emails, when users unsubscribe, what portion of them say they "never signed up for this"?

I mark any email that I didn't intend to sign up for as spam, and I never intentionally sign up for emails from companies.

If Gmail offers a "mark as spam and unsubscribe" option, I use it.

I hope that adds just the tiniest push for Google to automatically mark these types of emails as spam and encourage companies to do better.

But then, I do this maybe once a month with Google's own emails, so 🤷.

That's why we need two ssds for dual boot

It's at least gotten a bit better.

There was a time when Photoshop and other programs used a copy-protection scheme that overwrote parts of grub, causing the user not to be able to boot Linux or Windows.

They knew about it, and just DGAF. I don't remember their exact FAQ response, but it was something along the lines of "Photoshop is incompatible with GRUB. Don't dual boot if you use Photoshop."

Grub still has code for BIOS based installs that uses reed-solomon error correction at boot time to allow grub to continue to function even if parts of its core.img were clobbered by shitty copy protection schemes for Windows software.

I can't edit /etc/default/grub

This should get you back to defaults:

sudo cp /usr/share/grub/default/grub /etc/default/grub && sudo update-grub

At some point you definitely did accidentally write to /etc/default/grub when you meant to write to /boot/grub/grub.cfg.

There's no shame in that; Grub's configuration process is very confusing and counter-intuitive.

Everybody who has used Linux long enough has stories of breaking their systems in sillier ways, and this didn't even really break your system 🙂.

"Both parties are the same!"

"Both parties are the same" is an obviously silly statement.

At the same time, "Vote for the man who says he can't avoid building Trump's wall, but can use executive power to sell weapons specifically to be used for genocide... Because the other guy is worse." is not a great way to raise voter turnout.

Some of the people criticizing others in this thread have been organizing against genocide. Have been calling their representatives, protesting in the street, etc.

If that's you; Great! My beef is not with you.

If not, and especially if you were telling people to vote for Biden in 2020 because we could "push him to the left"; Maybe work on getting Biden to stop funding genocide and generally push an agenda that will make people want to vote for him.

With current levels of partisanship, turnout is what makes the difference in elections.

Criticizing the very people you're trying to get to vote is at best counter-productive.

Like it or not, if you're campaigning for Biden then you're an embassador for the Democratic party. People notice what you spend your energy on, and what you don't. If you spend more time calling people on the left "stupid" than you do campaigning to end genocide? People will notice, and they will associate Biden supporters with hypocrites that don't actually care about them or people like them.

Being a dick is easier than actually organizing; But it won't achieve your stated goals.

Bernie Sanders Calls for ‘NO MORE’ U.S. Funding For Netanyahu’s ‘Illegal, Immoral, Brutal, and Grossly Disproportionate War’ in Gaza

This same argument has been made throughout history.

"If we let Black people have freedom they'll murder all of the white plantation owners!"

Now, I wouldn't blame formerly enslaved people for murdering the people who enslaved them, but that didn't happen.

Aparthide in South Africa was ended without the promised (by white people) "white genocide" either.

Settler-colonial powers always think that the people they're oppressing will commit genocide, because it's what colonizers do.

The only road to true peace is full human rights for all.

STOP WRITING C

Fun fact!

The Asahi Linux drivers for the Apple M1 GPU were originally written in Python: https://asahilinux.org/2022/11/tales-of-the-m1-gpu/

GPU drivers in Python?!

Since getting all these structures right is critical for the GPU to work and the firmware to not crash, I needed a way of quickly experimenting with them while I reverse engineered things. Thankfully, the Asahi Linux project already has a tool for this: The m1n1 Python framework! Since I was already writing a GPU tracer for the m1n1 hypervisor and filling out structure definitions in Python, I decided to just flip it on its head and start writing a Python GPU kernel driver, using the same structure definitions. Python is great for this, since it is very easy to iterate with! Even better, it can already talk the basic RTKit protocols and parse crash logs, and I improved the tools for that so I could see exactly what the firmware was doing when it crashes. This is all done by running scripts on a development machine which connects to the M1 machine via USB, so you can easily reboot it every time you want to test something and the test cycle is very fast!

Why would the inventory be off?

Maybe OP didn't explain it well, but I would imagine that:

  1. This only happened with people who paid cash
  2. If we imagine that every person in line has one drink and is paying with cash, OP would be ringing up 2 drinks for every other customer.

For the purposes of inventory, 1 drink per person is the same as 2 for every other person.

What is an extremely dangerous thing that we use daily?

Reply in thread

Ok, this is a weird hypothetical, but if the world had been overcast for the last thousand years, and then suddenly there was sometimes just a completely blinding light in the sky that you sometimes have to drive straight toward, it would be chaos.

Before COVID I imagined that the death toll would be so high that most roads would be shut down until technology had been developed and distributed so that you could never be blinded by the sun while driving. (Not just a flip down sun visor, but something like an LCD screen front windshield with head tracking that automatically blocks just the sun from your view).

Now I know how quickly and easily people become acquainted with mass death.

Now I imagine there wouldn't even be a new driver's test required that requires you to demonstrate that you can safely drive into the sunset.

Just "We recommend, but don't require, that you have a sun visor in your car when using public roads."

Biden invites Trump to work together to lobby Congress on an immigration bill as both candidates visit border

Reply in thread

You know what's easy though?

Not bypassing congress to sell arms to a country specifically for genocide. (Biden and Israel)

Democrats will break rules / norms, it's just almost never for causes that help people.

He could have simply not done anything, and it would have been better.

If "Don't go out of your way to support genocide." is asking too much, then don't be surprised when people aren't excited to vote for your candidate.

Trolley Problem Solution

Reply in thread

A concrete example of this is doctors and hospitals creating guidelines about how to triage care when ICUs were/are full because of unmitigated spread of COVID.

It is definitely an "interesting" phylisophical question to ask:

"If a long term ventilator user comes into the ICU, with the ventilator they own and brought from home, and they are less likely to survive than an otherwise healthy young man who needs a respirator due to COVID infection, is the morally best choice to steal the disabled person's ventilator (killing them) and use it to save the young man's life?"

The policy question that should be asked instead, and never really ways, is "How do we make sure that we never get to the point where we have so many people in the ICU from a preventable disease that we run out of respirators and need to start choosing who to let die?"

This is not just a hypothetical question:

https://www.reuters.com/legal/government/long-term-ventilator-users-lose-bid-revive-suit-over-ny-emergency-guidelines-2022-11-23/

Disabled people continue to plead with us for the bare minimum, like requiring doctors who work with immunocompromised patients to wear N95 respirators while treating those patients.

We continue to chose to stack more people on both sets of tracks instead.
