Am I supposed to be enjoying any of this?

This is a super common and often unspoken phenomenon for fathers. It took me two years to feel emotionally attached to my first. Those two years sucked. It felt like all work, no reward. I powered through because love is a choice and I love my family. Slowly but surely, it happened. It happens for most of us. Especially as they start taking interests in the things we are interested in. You start seeing yourself in them - their looks and how they behave.

I am 99% sure you’ll end up loving your kids. I have three now. Just power through. You’re FAR from alone. Ask me if you have any questions.

1 year a go today, Concord was released.

Such a comprehensive example of poor decision making at so many levels. From the decision to charge for a PvP hero shooter in a saturated market of free PvP hero shooters, to spending what appeared to be tens of millions on marketing, PR, and CGI cut scenes, to the worst character designs in living memory. It’s clear they did zero focus group testing on those characters, or if they did, they ignored all feedback. As is so common now, everyone involved in the fiasco is going to be integrated into future projects and destroy them too. They’ll learn nothing and keep doing it.

Apple considered switching to DuckDuckGo from Google for Safari - Bloomberg News

Reply in thread

It's like Google back in 2010. You find stuff you are looking for without pages and pages of ads, spam, and clickbait.

If you hit a domain which is obviously spam, you can block it forever. If you find a domain you really like, you can promote it for future results.

It's clear that Google's motivation is no longer to offer good results. It's to maximise the time you're on the site, and the number of ads and spam sites you click. Their goal is now, literally, to feed you bad results.

Jon Stewart’s Apple TV Plus show ends, reportedly over coverage of AI and China

Good on him for sticking to his ideals. I don’t always see eye to eye with Stewart, but he’s smart, principled, and articulate. Very interesting to hear how Apple is so married to China and AI. I wonder how much we don’t hear because companies and media are afraid of angering the CCP. Thankfully Biden is continuing Trump’s policies of decoupling from China. We can’t do business with genocidal dictatorships and expect to walk away unscathed.

how positively I’m perceived on a given day seems to not correlate with any work done

seems to mostly depend on how I look in meetings

I have discovered that being liked is more important than doing anything. This appears to be a near universal reality, and applies to work, relationships, family, religion, politics, home renovation, economics, finance - you name it. Always be nice to your colleagues. Smile a lot. Be interested in their hobbies. Say yes to social time. This is how you get promoted. If you want to make it to the C suite, you need to put in a little effort. Not too much though. You don't want to become too important in your role to promote.

Apple refuses to relax its iron grip on iPhones in Europe

I think many of us anticipated Apple’s malicious compliance. Now we see if the EU really will hold them to account. I’m tentatively optimistic but I admit I’ll be very disappointed if Apple wins this. It will cement their position of power globally as untouchable, and that’s a terrible outcome for the whole world. I am very disappointed that the EU permitted Apple to declare iOS as distinct from all other mobile operating systems. They even permitted them to exclude iPadOS as a Core Platform Service. Just that decision alone now excludes all Apple TVs, iPads, the Vision, and Watch. I hope that decision is also revisited.

I don’t agree. They can reasonably argue that advertising is a requirement of their business model, so it is necessary to advertise. Therefore it is necessary for them to block access to those blocking advertising. The directive cited isn’t intended to make advertiser supported services effectively illegal in the EU. That would be a massive own goal. It’s intended to make deceptive and unnecessary data collection illegal. Nothing YouTube is doing is deceptive. They’re being very clear about their intention to advertise to non-subscribers.

‘You just can’t walk up to people with brown skin and say give me your papers,’ a federal judge told Border Patrol attorneys at a hearing challenging recent immigration sweeps.

This is settled law. 8 U.S.C. § 1357(a)(3) allows immigration officers to conduct warrantless searches and interrogations “within a reasonable distance” of the border. The term “reasonable distance” has been defined by regulation (8 C.F.R. § 287.1) as within 100 miles of any U.S. international boundary or coastline.

There is one exception in case law: they cannot stop vehicles at random without “reasonable suspicion” outside of fixed checkpoints (based on United States v. Brignoni-Ponce, 422 U.S. 873 (1975)).

The judge has not decided the case yet, but she likely understands the above well, and any judgement will be narrow and specifically within the confines of existing statute and precedent. U.S. border security laws have always been incredibly broad and arguably draconian. Successive administrations on the left and the right have kept it that way.

Separated at birth, identical twins raised in Korea and America found to have unusual differences in IQ

while the other faced hardships with her adoptive family and parents

Does anyone have more info? Abuse, neglect, and malnutrition are proven to reduce IQ. So are the concussions referenced in the article. I would be dubious to make any statements on the back of a single case like this. This is not even outside the realm of possibility of twin IQ variance - albeit unlikely.

What caused this?

China stands as a current authoritarian model which is being championed by people like Australian economist Steve Keen.

If you can handle the ethnic genocide, the lack of due process, suppression of information and free speech, and no democracy, you can look forward to clean streets, low crime, and high economic growth. Some people believe that's a worthy trade. I do not.

Arrrrr! Welcome Aboard The Good Ship Matey 🏴‍☠️

With Radarr, Sonarr, and Plex, I get a better TV and movie service than anything I could pay for. I can afford to pay, and I would, but they won't offer anything reasonable. I ditched Netflix years ago when they removed the rating system to promote their low quality schlock. They kept removing content. Content would auto-play. Discovery broke as they kept trying to make me watch things I didn't want to watch. If they make their products worse, and keep charging me more every year, they shouldn't be surprised when I leave.

The White House wants to 'cryptographically verify' videos of Joe Biden so viewers don't mistake them for AI deepfakes

This doesn’t solve anything. The White House will only authenticate videos which make the President look good. Curated and carefully edited PR. Maybe the occasional press conference. The vast majority of content will not be authenticated. If anything this makes the problem worse, as it will give the President remit to claim videos which make them look bad are not authenticated and should therefore be distrusted.

Spoiler: I am deeply into the arr "ecosystem" and love the shit out of it.

I think I finally understand Linux fans. Yes it's confusing for new people, but because I'm so into the weeds on this stuff I love how much choice I have. And if one of the projects doesn't have what we want, someone makes a fork.

To point: you really only need Sonarr and Radarr. Get those set up and working how you like. I recommend the Trash Guides. Once that's working how you like, get Prowlarr for easy management of your usenet and torrent indexers. Most people should stop there.

Both of his Dune adaptations are, IMHO, perfect. I don't know how he did it but he pulled off one of the most ambitious sci-fi books of all time. I have full confidence. Even if he doesn't knock the next one out of the park, it will still have a great script, great acting, incredible score, incredible cinematography, great CGI, great costumes, and great sets. That's good enough for me. I'm just looking forward to more Dune by Villeneuve.
