EU KIDS Act will require age verification for all online and perhaps offline games to "protect children"

Reply in thread

the world seems to actively hate the idea of kids having something that remotely looks like choice.

Replace that with "power seems to actively hate the idea of anyone having anything that remotely looks like choice". Mostly because everything is determined. And they know this. They understand that nothing is up to chance. We're perfect little bots who respond deterministically (albeit chaotically) to sex, advertisement, gambling, propaganda, drugs, and so on. Basically all aspects of modern life are designed to chip away at your degrees of freedom. Consider a mortgage, for instance. It locks you into a job so that you can't afford to quit anymore, or you end up destitute. Then consider marriage: it exists so that you buy a house and so that you have children in it. Every choice we think we're making clicks like a ratchet and locks us into a lower energy state that's easy to control.

Or... and I'm prepared to receive flak for this. But consider transitioning in the US specifically. On one side you have Dems coddling you, and on the other side you have Republicans threatening to murder you. So once you transition you're a Dem voter for life even if you don't agree on their other policies. Both parties are playing the same game behind your back.

Why Does Nobody Use Lemmy?

Because it's a carbon copy of reddit and it replicates all of its problems in miniature. Also because everyone in here is extremely exclusionary and hateful of anyone who isn't wholesome 100. Also because it's decentralized but not peer to peer, which means that it's basically feudalism.

"Everything was Forbidden Except Breathing and Swift Death”: Israel’s Sadism Up Close

Reply in thread

I mean sure but you're using the term "conservative" which is deeply embedded in american rhetoric. You're basically saying that anyone who isn't an ardent communist or anarchist should die, which is not exactly what Popper meant either..

Conservative just means opposed to radical change. Sometimes the world gets enshittified. Sometimes a thing you gave for granted changes, and the change hurts because you know what it was like before.

My political views in a nutshell

Right. So everyone in this thread is seeing whatever the fuck they want to see in the comic, which is vague on purpose because god forbid OP actually expresses their political views like an adult, and we're all talking over each other while they sit back without elaborating on what the fuck they meant. And we think we're so smart, too, while discussing engagement bait drawn by someone with the artistic skills of a literal toddler.

Man, I feel you. You say X and then a mob of rabid dogs comes at you with "SO YOU SUPPORT HITLER??!??!". Modern online discussion is soul-draining. You know what's funny to me? That these people copy and pasted reddit, and instead of removing downvotes or at least bringing them back to a tool for moderating off-topic content, they kept them. And they still use them as a "I disagree" button, which is against the original purpose of the reddiquette that no one ever read. Also they made it decentralized but not peer to peer, so basically they ended up promoting reddit mods to instance admins. Amazing revolutionary pragmatism.

My political views in a nutshell

Popper's paradox of intolerance is something that is never discussed by online leftists. Why is that? How can you respect people who will put you in an oven the moment they gain power? Don't you see how you're literally enabling them by pretending to hold a moral high ground that doesn't exist?

The internet trained us to think that anything remotely hostile or "hateful" is an indictment on a person's soul. That if you don't accept everyone unconditionally you must be a monster. But my immune system keeps me alive by literally eradicating foreign pathogens that pretend to be benign. If my immune system didn't do that, then not only I but humanity itself would not exist. So what gives?

Google Accused of Illegally Killing a Massive Forest for Its New Data Center Project: It's "gross incompetence," or "gross disregard" for the law. Or both.

Reply in thread

Google was born from In-Q-Tel. they're literally the CIA. How uninformed is the average internet user to not see that the entire techbro oligopoly is simply the mask dropping? Sometimes I wonder what the koolaid tastes like. To believe that things just happen uncaused, that geopolitics is the weather, and that conspiracies are better explained by emergent behavior. That it's never malice, just stupidity. That the top 1% is not on the far end of the bell curve, that they're not merely pretending to be retarded. You know it's like looking at the top chess players and concluding that it's not skill (or anal beads), but dumb luck.

In other words the thing I'm mocking (and being downvoted for) is the notion that Google can be split up when it acts as an extension of the government. It's like asking a person to cut off their own arm. Of course they won't.

Another win for the decentralized Fediverse when a government domain takeback can’t shut it down!

Bruh it's 10 dollars PER YEAR.

I've owned a .com domain for over a decade, ever since BEFORE I actually had a job and was living on allowances, and it still doesn't register as an expense to me.

The content I host on that domain has been used by 3 different people tops, which is me and a couple of my friends. It's still worth it.

If I were to build a public-facing service I'd certainly fork over the bare minimum to guarantee that it fucking stays up even if I don't expect thousands of users. It's just a matter of doing things properly. Free domains have always been sketchy as fuck, every scam ever was hosted on a .tk domain at some point.

But as it has been stated multiple times already, the only reason they actually went with ".ml" is because they thought it would be funny for the marxist-leninist association. That's literally it. It's not about money. Anyone with access to a dev machine has 10 dollars a year to spend or they wouldn't be shitposting on the internet.
