Anon is in love

"So how did they end up being defeated?"

"Well, we pacified them by giving them the love and affection that they refused to give each other."

"Wait really?"

"Yes, the majority were so starved for an emotional connection that they preferred us."

"Where are they now?"

"The majority are withering away in VR warehouses, living 'happily ever after'."

Mexico unveils new tariffs, popular e-tailers like Shein, Temu may be in crosshairs

Regardless of the merits of tariffs and protectionism, it is IMO quite necessary that these kinds of companies, that churn out cheap garbage with no regard for pollution be punitively targeted. Not only does it ruin our planet, but it also undermines those businesses who actually try to produce decent products.

Ideally big corps that simply import and resell these types of products (either through willful ignorance or malicious intent) shouldn't get away either, and need to be held accountable.

Are there any addons as essential as uBlockOrigin?

Since it hasn't been mentioned - containers.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/multi-account-containers/

Essentially lets you keep have browser tabs with entirely separate cookies from each other (like if you opened it in a different browser). Helps me keep work and personal accounts apart, and also sandbox evil^tm^ webpages I'm forced to visit (by giving them their own container).

I almost forget it isn't included in firefox by default.

Microsoft word update messes up exams in Denmark

Reply in thread

In the Scandinavian countries this sort of software is usually provided by the school/university, so the students don't have to buy it. You may however be (essentially) forced to use that software, since other options aren't supported. The exam software my uni uses for instance only runs on Windows & MacOS.

Hacked ‘AI Girlfriend’ Data Shows Prompts Describing Child Sexual Abuse

Reply in thread

Now that devices are starting to have built in features with AI automatically combing through all information on them, the idea of this sort of stuff being logged in the first place is concerning.

For instance, should someone prompting an AI to describe them beating up and torturing their boss be flagged for "potentially violent tendencies"? Who decides the "limit" where "privacy" no longer applies and stuff should be flagged, logged and sent off to authorities?

As I see it, the real issue is people being hurt, not text or fictive materials, however sickening they might be.

If the resources invested in spying on people and making databases were instead directed towards funding robust and publicly available psychiatric care I expect that'd be more efficient.

Killing blow for Tesla: The cars do not get new license plates

Reply in thread

The thing is that this isn't just about Tesla and their employees/contractors - our entire labour market is built on collective negotiations between workers and the employers. If a single big corp gets away with preventing unionization amongst its employees, it may very well upend the entire thing. Hence why other unions act in solidarity and other companies don't even try to support tesla - as doing so could very well lead to the strike spreading and becoming a general strike.

Do white men need to walk on eggshells?

Whilst I wouldn't call it "walking on eggshells" - I've had my perspective invalidated in discussions based on my perceived identity (majority culture, male) on more than one occasion.

I'm also part of an "invisible" minority which does necessitate actually "walking on eggshells" in certain contexts.

It is a bit disheartening that my being part of an invisible minority somehow makes my personal perspective "more valid" to some people. Every person is an individual, and personal, lived experiences are so much more important than demographic markers and groups.

Calling VISA to discuss the censorship of Valve & Steam games

If you are a MasterCard customer, like me, and have any concerns you'd like to bring up with the company they have a very convenient PDF with toll-free numbers for all countries available here:

https://www.mastercard.com/_assets/docs/GlobalServiceTollfreeNumbers.pdf

I was very lucky to be able to find the link, because their customer support number wasn't advertised anywhere on their website for my country!

Hot take: LLM technology is being purposefully framed as AI to avoid accountability

IMO content created by either AI or LLMs should have a special license and be considered AI public domain (unless they can prove that they own all content the AI was trained on). Commercial content made based on content marked with this license would be subject to a flat % tax that should be applied to the product price which would be earmarked for a fund distributing to human creators (coders, writers, musicians etc.).
