Men can take their shirts off for hot days and exercise. Why can't women do the same in 2025?

In much of Europe and North America, female toplessness is legal. As for why women don't take advantage of it when exercising, breast movement varies from annoyance to uncomfortable and throwing off momentum depending upon size. As a result, many women exercise wearing what is most convenient: a sports-bra top. However, concerns about harassment are sadly valid.

Women are the majority of voting age adults, but they aren't a homogeneous group voting exclusively on gender. 45% of women voted for Trump in 2024.

As a male who exercises in high heat on occasion (35-38c), I have never once thought that I'd rather be naked. I wear breathable, light colored clothing. I also wear a top. Sun burns aren't healthy.

Why do Americans pretend they're not broke when most Americans are in debt?

Debt, used properly, makes you wealthy. Every billionaire you know has debt because of the advantages.

I grew up middle class. To afford my prestigeous university, I took out debt (before grant only financial aid). The value of my education allowed me to earn a higher salary to pay it off in two years. I kept earning that salary and more after the debt was paid. It had a high present value.

I bought my latest house four years ago. Mortgage rates were so low I decided to finance part of it at 2% even though I had the cash. I now earn 4.5% in money markets. After taxes, I earn 0.72% every year not to pay off my mortgage. With $350,000 remaining, this is an extra $2,500/year right now.

I shop with credit cards that give me 2-5% back on purchases. I pay off my balance every month and have never paid one penny in interest or penalties in over a decade. My credit cards therefore pay ~$1,500/year tax free.

Larry Ellison likes controlling Oracle and being a billionaire. Rather than selling stock of Oracle to fund his lifestyle, he instead borrows against the value of the stock. As Oracle appreciated, he got to keep the gains he doesn't trigger capital gains taxes.

Most Americans do live paycheck to paycheck. They live at the ragged edge of their means and remain ignorant of finance. However, this is a global phenomenon. The difference is that much of the United States tax code is set up to benefit the wealthy. Adopt their habits and your wealth starts to snowball.

'I've Never Seen Anything Like It': Trump Policies Leave US Farmers in Dire Straits

78% of top farming counties voted for Trump and his clearly defined policies less than a year ago, so I fail to understand the complaints.

If they wanted cheap migrant farm labor and global markets to buy their goods, they should have supported another candidate for President loudly and overwhelmingly.

As a result, farmers can raise what they pay to entice American labor and sell their soybeans cheaper domestically. If they didn't do the math to determine if their politics were profitable, they can relinquish the businesses they mismanaged, and better people/companies can take over the land or it can return to nature.

Cheap healthy plant protein, more intelligent replacement farmers, and/or less factory farming dumping nitrates in the Gulf seems like a win for everyone but those who willingly chose this path.

Cracker Barrel Outrage Was Almost Certainly Driven by Bots, Researchers Say

I like Cracker Barrel's four vegetarian sides plate. I can pick reasonably healthy options and the price isn't terrible. They are my preferred interstate-adjacent dining option on roadtrips. I'm even a loyalty member.

Yet I can't imagine spending one microsecond thinking about their logo let alone being stupid enough to be manipulated into having an opinion and then believing it relates to politics. Unless you are the majority shareholder, your view is utterly irrelevant. Shut up and either patronize the place or not.

There are a lot of people today on the right who cosplay as libertarians but somehow care deeply about the logo of a company they don't own.

Priorities

The room has a >91.25% annual shooting rate?

I don't want to brag, but I've been living in the United States for 25 years and I haven't been shot once. If the room resets annually, my odds to this point were 3.55x10^-27. Am I the last American?

Inspiration towards a life more aligned with solarpunk values

Here are the steps in our journey over the past five years:

  • Subscribed to solar power for 100% of my electricity
  • Drive an electric car when I have to, but bike exclusively within a two mile radius
  • Bought a laundry line and line dry clothes
  • Eat a mostly whole food, plant-based diet with lots of legumes to maximize my health and wealth while cutting my climate impact
  • Slashed my single use plastics consumption as well as durable to reduce microplastics breathed and consumed
  • Visit a library once a week
  • Grow simple plants (green onions, basil)
  • Keep air conditioning to a minimum (live in Florida)
  • Buy used/refurbished preferentially
  • Pesticide-free outdoors to encourage native insect predators and now my backyard is filled with butterflies
  • Recycle maximally following all guidelines and produce less than 1/10th the waste stream of my neighbors for a family of four with two pets
  • Replaced older, less efficient air conditioning with newer, high efficiency

I'm proud of what we've achieved, but there's still more to do. In the next five years we will:

  • Replace our other, less driven ICE vehicle with an electric
  • Transition to full pesca-vegetarianism
  • Install balcony solar as hopefully it will become legal (or I will smuggle a system in from Utah or Vermont)
  • Plant fruit/shade trees
  • Paint our home a lighter, high albedo color
  • Blow in additional insulation in the attic
  • Install a home car charger
  • Replace the last of our plastic clothing with natural fibers

2 tonnes CO2eq/person without carbon offsets for everything but travel is our end goal.

Talk about mixed messages

California NIMBYs are the worst in the country.

The only problem I see is the buildings aren't tall enough. If we want to end the cost of living crisis, we need affordable housing stock and lots of it. To get that, we need to build. To build to meet demand, we need flexible zoning.

The Bay Area should copy Tokyo, the largest metropolis on the planet which is also in an earthquake zone and has relatively affordable housing with excellent neighborhoods.

Scientists for Future, October 2021: Nuclear Energy is no technology for solving the Climate Crisis

I disagree completely. This text is oddly biased and in parts, completely false. It also dates from 2021.

Nuclear power is the single safest power source ever devised and does not suffer from intermittency. The fearmongering from anti-nuclear, anti-science campaigners in the 1970s was nothing but a gift to coal and advanced climate change by five years.

Climate change is an existential threat. Nuclear power is one of the answers.
