The Reddit Blackout Is Breaking Reddit

Reply in thread

It's a big, relevant, ongoing event which affects the fediverse directly. There's a huge influx of new users who were recently burned by it who would normally go to "the other website" to discuss, but no longer do.

Would you prefer they go back, or is there a place here for those displaced?

I've seen a few discussions about the "failed" protests and wanted to talk about it

Honestly I feel that the outcome was optimal.

  1. It created animosity towards Reddit.
  2. It exposed major problems with Reddit.
  3. It boosted fediverse's numbers.
  4. It tapered off before the fediverse came crashing down from the influx of millions.
  5. It reinforced the mandate to develop the fediverse, there's clearly something here and it's worth deving towards.
  6. Reddit is guaranteed to shoot itself in the foot again, probably pre-IPO, definitely post-IPO, and now the fediverse is being given some much needed time to flesh itself out before they do.

If Reddit collapsed over this I don't believe the infrastructure exists at this time to onboard all those members, so it's a blessing in disguise.

Well that depends, you've been pretty thoroughly educated in this post, so now what will you do about it? I fully expect you'll return to your far right anti-woke hatemongering, in which case yes you should be blocked.

Or you can retract it, and maybe there's hope for you yet.
