"Progress"

You might be able to easily spot sarcasm, but not everyone is blessed with that ability. Many autistic people, for instance, struggle to detect sarcasm. And comments being text only makes it harder. "/s" is an accessibility tool and implying that using these tools is "dumbing down" communication is honestly a very shitty move.

Windows compatibility is insane!

Not my experience. I've had multiple old games and an old printer that just straight up didn't work under Windows. On Linux however (using wine for the windows exe's) it usually does run. Sometimes it does require some googling, but there's usually someone who tried it before.

Most Brits reckon Brexit has failed, new poll finds

It surprises me that so many people think it didn't fail. Remainers, which as far as I can remember nearly made up 50%, will almost all think it has failed from the start because they see the whole Brexit as a failed idea. And many Brexiteers seemed to have very unrealistic ideas about Brexit, seemingly thinking that they could just boss the EU around and get everything their way. And because we don't live in their fairytale Brexit utopia world, they would always have been disappointed. Add to that the general incompetency of the Conservatives and it's honestly quite astounding that anyone still thinks it's going well.

Rule

I swear, these workplace "training" programmes seem to be so incredibly out of touch sometimes. We also had one of these trainings and while the goal is of course very noble, it really just had the opposite effect. The examples were so silly that people just laughed at it and made fun of the whole thing, which made the workplace less welcoming instead of more.

Something something The Juniper Tree

That was hard to read, damn. I can read German quite well, but the font basically makes the capital letters a pure gamble to me. I guess this is a lesson to always listen to speaking cats lol.

Edit: Like "Der Vater hat's verboten". "Vater" is written more like "Bater" in this font

Since I deleted Apollo from my phone. Rince and repeat.

Reply in thread

Yeah I did the same with Jerboa a few days ago. I keep clicking it, and it's actually building the "good" habit of using Lemmy instead of reddit. There's less content here though, but maybe that's a blessing in disguise. Filling the "mindless scrolling of the internet" time with something useful should be my actual goal. So having less stuff to browse might help with that.

This comment right here

This change may also be explained because many protestors are still gone. I have barely touched Reddit after the blackout, and the only time I did was to support some of these votes. But inevitably I must've missed some. It's probably a bit of survivorship bias. Though it's probably also partially that people did indeed realize that they can't miss the thing they're addicted to for more than 2 days.

What screams "poorly educated"?

Reply in thread

To be honest, I disagree. It'd be logical if that was true, because that's what you'd expect, but I've met plenty of counterexamples. People who were well educated in some subject and therefore assumed that they know everything better. I've found that for a certain group of people, having a bachelor's or master's degree makes them overestimate their ability massively. Some of them you could at least partially convince with facts, but I've also met a few of them who has gone completely off the deep end. Well educated doesn't always mean intelligent

How does everyone here feel about foldable phones?

I definitely understand that there is a market for it, but personally I'm not interested. They're expensive, vulnerable, and I have no need for a screen like that. The high prices and vulnerability were excusable in the first few generations, but I feel like we should've advanced further by now. I wonder how many people really use one.

Are you still enjoying F1 this season?

I'm loving it. Ignoring Max, every race is different. Basically anyone can finish at any place, even though there are definitely trends. Hulkenberg and Norris suddenly being up in the top 5, Albon in the points. Then you have the constant fight between Aston, Mercedes, Ferrari, and Perez. There's plenty of good racing, you just shouldn't care too much about who wins (since that's almost a given).

Lemmy controversy?

Reply in thread

I think the problem is moreso (as far as I've heard) that the owners of the lemmy.ml instance overlap with the owners of lemmygrad, which is basically the table/authoritarian commie instance. There have been some rumours about posts and comments being deleted for being critical of China/Russia. How much of that is true, I don't know,l. What I have noticed is that there is a higher percentage of tankies on Lemmy, but they're still usually down voted when they say dumb stuff.

It's a bit silly, because this kind of meme can definitely be interpreted as both a bigoted meme and as a sort of "ironic" kinda meme that is quite often posted in LGBT+ circles. It uses a lot of outdated terms like "Transsexual" and "Hermaphrodite", but then also has the more LGBT+ shitpost stuff like "pet walking on keyboard - Other". And indeed the absurdity of asking gender everywhere in the first place. I choose to pick the LGBT+ positive interpretation, but idk whether that's its actual meaning.

Haskell is so cool. It feels like exploring a new world. I've learnt so many things in Haskell over the years, and yet it feels like there's always more stuff to find out. I still don't full get monads
