A few thoughts on Beehaw's design

Thanks for mentioning the "thirst" problem in certain communities, because that's one of my biggest frustrations on other platforms right now. It gets aggravating in communities about anime, gaming and other entertainment, when where there's very little discussion about the media itself, just simping for the female characters. I get it, One Punch Man fanbase. You think Tatsumaki and Fubuki are hot.

If you're that thirsty, there are other sites on the internet for that. Plenty of them. Which is why I think it's perfectly acceptable to not allow NSFW content here. Especially for the reasons you mentioned, it's not worth the legal risk anyway.

Twitch Is Desperate

Reply in thread

The problem is, Twitch claimed on Twitter that they'll be reversing the change immediately, but when you look at the "updated" policy, it still contains some of the changes that nobody likes. This is all explained in the video that's been linked in the post.

Why is /r/Videos shutting down on June 12th? How will this change affect regular users? More info here.

It's nice to hear that so many subreddits and mods trying to do something about this... they can see the brick wall that Reddit's owners are about to plow into, and are trying to steer the site away from probable destruction. If they're dead set on selling Reddit though, I'm pessimistic about whether or not they will care enough to course correct at this point. Maybe it got their attention when Fidelity cut their valuation by 41%, but the lack of any response so far despite significant backlash has me thinking that perhaps they don't intend to respond. Regardless of whether that's their intent or not, they're certainly sending the message that they don't care. I wouldn't be surprised if they take whatever paycheck they can get, abandon the ship and have zero concerns when it sinks on someone else's watch.

Diablo IV is the fastest selling Blizzard game of all-time

I, uh... sort of feel like that's already happened? It's bloated with microtransactions, including horse armor, and people are still buying the hell out of it. Every season going forward is going to have a battle pass and 70% of the season rewards are locked behind a paywall. That's a new battle pass, and a new microtransaction, every season. It's designed to be predatory as possible from day one, and I don't want to go anywhere near it.

Biden vetoes measure overturning student loan forgiveness plan

I have no idea why Congressional Republicans wasted their time pushing this forward to Biden's desk when the Supreme Court already has a deadline to issue a ruling on the legality of the plan. If the conservative-leaning justices shoot the plan down, Biden's veto will be entirely pointless.

Also, Biden is either blatantly lying or being very forgetful when he claimed, "I won’t back down on helping hardworking folks" after vetoing this bill. He literally just backed down on the same issue when he gave into Republican demands about student loans on the debt ceiling deal.

Former Vice President Pence files paperwork launching 2024 presidential bid in challenge to Trump

It's also possible that candidates like Chris Christie, Nikki Haley, Mike Pence and Asa Hutchinson are all banking on the idea that scandals and legal troubles could sink both Trump and DeSantis by 2024. Bill Clinton wasn't seen as the obvious choice for the Democrats in 1991, and it wasn't until February or March of 1992 that he emerged as the front-runner. A lot can happen in the next several months, so I'm sure they want to get their foot in the door early.

That being said? Pence is still unelectable in my view. The MAGA death cult will write-in Ivanka, or something, rather than begrudgingly casting a vote for him.

#1 for me. That gold cartridge really stood out amidst my collection of other NES games, for more reasons than one. Naturally, I needed a guide to get through my first playthrough, but I kept coming back to it and eventually had the whole game damn near memorized.

Robert Hanssen: Convicted US spy found dead in Colorado prison

According to the FBI's website, he 'compromised numerous human sources, counterintelligence techniques, investigations, dozens of classified US government documents, and technical operations of extraordinary importance and value'.

I just think it's worth noting that the person who did that in 2002 was "one of the most damaging spies in U.S. history." But the person who allegedly did the same thing in 2021 is currently the front-runner for the Republican Party's presidential nomination.

Trump is not as popular as he was in 2016, when he promised to drain the swamp, build the wall, and lock Hillary up. He still has many deluded supporters, but a significant percentage took a look around when he left office and realized... none of those things actually happened. He never had a plan to fix Washington. He didn't pardon the Jan. 6th rioters on his way out the door. There was no secret legal trick to reinstate him as President when Biden was inaugurated. JFK Jr. didn't come back from the dead and anoint him as the messiah. I definitely think he would get fewer votes in 2024 than he did in 2020, because his utter failure to live up to those promises did damage his reputation to a measurable degree.

That being said, I'm not willing to take a risk on another Trump vs. Biden contest. If the reports are accurate, the Dept. of Justice has a recording of Trump admitting that he took classified material to Mar-A-Lago, and knew he couldn't simply declare them de-classified. That's a massive cherry on top of a layer cake of evidence turned over to DoJ by Congress. Trump needs to be indicted, convicted, and barred from holding public office as expeditiously as possible, so we never have to risk seeing that traitor in the White House ever again.

It would be nice to have an option to flag something as "paywall" or "limited paywall" in the UI when creating a post. But I also don't want to clutter up the UI too much, and I don't know if enough users would use the feature to justify adding it.

If it were possible to add flair to posts, that might be a good way of doing it, and meet other user requests related to flair. Not sure how easy it is to add that, but I would definitely use that feature if it were available.
