When downloading Roms, how can you know their game hashes for retroachievement

cross-posted from: https://sh.itjust.works/post/64564458

Hi everyone!

I’d want to replay my Shenmue games that I have on their original discs.

Sadly, I don’t have a Dreamcast and I don’t think I’d be able to rip them even with my bluray external drive.

So, I’ll have to download them. What would be a great place and how could I know the game hash since not all of them are compatible with retroachievements?

Thanks for your answer

EDIT: I managed to get european roms from Shenmue 1 ( https://retroachievements.org/game/3398/hashes ) and 2 ( https://retroachievements.org/game/3489/hashes ) on these 2 sites ( https://archive.org/download/RedumpSegaDreamcast20160613 and https://romsfun.com/roms/dreamcast/shenmue.html ).

Then I tried using Collision ( https://collision.geopjr.dev/ ) to check the game files but none of the MD5 hashes were the same as the ones on retroachievements.

So I have to admit that I'm a bit lost and don't know what to do just to be able to replay these lovely games while getting achievements.

Edit 2: In the end I just downloaded the games from https://archive.org/download/RedumpSegaDreamcast20160613 and https://romsfun.com/roms/dreamcast/shenmue.html and, when launching them, I got an information that I had something like 0 out 115 achievements, so I know these games work with retroachievements. Thanks!

EDIT2: This is what retroachievements is saying so apparently I shouldn't be looking for nan MD5 result. Still, Collision gives me MD5, SHA1, SHA256, SHA512, Blake3, CRC32 and Adler 32 results and none of them is the right one.

"Dreamcast uses a custom hash. The disc metadata and primary executable are hashed as follows:

The first 512 bytes of sector 0 are appended to the buffer. This contains the volume header and ROM header. The first 16 bytes must be "SEGA SEGAKATANA ". If not, discard as invalid.
The contents of the primary executable (as identified by the volume header) are appended to the buffer.
The buffer is hashed."

Edit3: In the end I just downloaded the games from https://archive.org/download/RedumpSegaDreamcast20160613 and https://romsfun.com/roms/dreamcast/shenmue.html and, when launching them, I got an information that I had something like 0 out 115 achievements, so I know these games work with retroachievements. Bluetooth problems on Pop_OS!

cross-posted from: https://sh.itjust.works/post/64544544

Hi everyone!

I've been a happy Gnome and Fedora Silverblue on a Surface Go user but I'm always happy to learn about new DE's in Linux. After trying and hating KDE on my Steam Deck desktop mode, I wanted to see if Cosmic would be the perfect middleground and installed it on my wife old MacBook Pro 2012 which was previously running Fedora Workstation flawlessly.

After some light struggles with Ventoy, I managed to install Pop_OS! 24.04 and everything was working except the wifi, which is a known issue with these Macs.

The bluetooth for my Surface Modern Mobile Mouse worked fine at that moment, but as soon as I rebooted afther the necessary commands to get the wifi card working ( sudo apt install firmware-b43-installer , sudo apt install linux-firmware , sudo reboot ), the mouse got disconnected.

I tried many things, installed blueman and the mouse is seen, but as soon as I connect to it, it disconnect.

As I wanted to isolate the issue, I uninstalled the wifi card ( sudo apt remove firmware-b43-installer, sudo reboot) and then had a perfectly working bluetooth mouse.

So for now, I have to choose between my bluetooth mouse and wifi, and both are important features.

Thanks for your help!

Othewise, the experience is good even if a bit buggy/feature lacking with these problems:

  • can't configure the f3 key to automatically tile windows on a workspace
  • being force to use 4 fingers gesture to move between workspaces instead of 3 on Gnome (muscle memory). It's difficult for me and my big hands to lay for fingers on the trackpad and I prefer it to the keyboard shortcut which I can't configure to be the same as in Gnome
  • no ability to force an application to automatically be moved on a certain workspace (on Gnome I have 6 applications opening at startup and each one is going on its own workspace with the auto move extension)

Edit: sudo apt install broadcom-sta-dkms worked so huge thanks to Anon5621!

What do you think about Exophase the throphies/achievements tracker?

Hi everyone!

I'm slowly ditching the Playstation ecosystem for Linux gaming, through a mix of GOG and Steam.

I know some people think achievements/trophies are stupid and useless, but I'm kind of addicted to them. At least it's better than being addicted to likes on social media..

I feel like they also motivate me to go further in games where there is no story and not give up when something is too difficult.

As moving from one ecosystem to another kind of meant putting my Playstation achievements behind, I was happy to discover https://www.exophase.com/ because it gathers all your achievements across many platforms.

As I like supporting what I use, I was planning on getting the premium account at 30$ for my lifetime.

But first, I wanted to know what the open source and Linux gaming community thinks about exophase as I don't want to support a project with a bad track record.

Thanks!

Steam Machine not available in my country. What would you do?

Hi everyone!

I had been a Playstation user since the first one and I own the fifth one.

After using Linux for years on weak computers for my admin, I decided to try Linux gaming in 2025 and bought a used LCD Steam Deck.

While I’ve been enjoying the Steam Deck, it hurts my neck and isn’t powerful enough for sim racing games.

Naturally, I was happy to learn that the Steam Machine was coming and was willing to invest up to CHF1000.- (~$1236) to get it.

Sadly, it’s not available to order in my country, Switzerland.

So now I have to choose between finding ways to order a Steam Machine or buying a prebuilt computer since I don’t want to source components to build something myself.

My priority would still be the Steam Machine, but I’d be open to alternatives.

What are your advices, what would you do if you’re in the same situation?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Edit and update:

Thank you all for your answers and useful links! You gave me some great advices!

In the end, I'll keep using a combo of Steam Deck and Playstation 5 for a while. The Steam Deck for almost every game, but more often than before docked to preserve my neck, and the Playstation 5 for demanding racing games or an eventual Last Of Us 3.

Then, around 2029, once my Playstation 5 is gonna be old and not upgradeable, I'll get a Linux gaming rig which is gonna be more powerful. At that time, I'll have a better disposable income, but I'd still want to pay around CHF 1000.- anyway.

It'll also allow me to fully emulate all my Playstation games which aren't available on PC, at least from PS1 to PS4 generations, and use these consoles as decoration for memories.

GOG when available, but what should I choose between PS5 physical and Steam when not?

Hi everyone!

For my gaming needs, I have a Steam Deck and a Playstation 5 for now. They’ll probably be joined by a Steam Machine in the next year if the price is under 1000$ with 2 controllers.

For my admin needs, I have a few Linux computers running Fedora.

For my movie needs, I have an HTPC running LibreELEC.

Whenever possible, I’ll get my games on GOG from now on.

A lot of games aren’t on GOG though, so I have to choose between getting physical discs for my PS5 or through Steam.

For now, I can’t get demanding games on Steam since the Deck isn’t powerful enough, but with the arrival of the Machine, I’ll almost have power parity with the PS5.

I don’t plan on selling the PS5 as my son plays some Roblox, the NBA app works better on it than on my TV and I could want some games that Sony won’t release (anymore) on PC.

One day, once my switch to Linux gaming is over I might even give it to my son when hés gonna be old enough to game in his room.

So my question is should I buy physical games on Playstation, with the ability to resell them and get them on GOG one day for cheap, or should I get the games on Steam where they could just be taken away if Steam becomes evil?

Edit/conclusion:

In the end, if I get a Steam Machine, it’ll probably be:

  1. GOG when available
  2. Steam
  3. Playstation physical for their exclusives

Without the Steam Machine, it’ll be the same but I’ll have to take into account that some games are too demanding for the Deck, so it’ll be PS5 physical.

Can't display HEIC pictures in file explorer in Fedora Silverblue and Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS (Solved)

Hi everyone!

Everything is in the title. I can't open pictures taken from my work iPhone (HEIC and also used for family pictures) on Fedora Silverblue 44 and Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS.

For Silverblue I've tried a lot of stuff like:

rpm-ostree install libheif-tools rpm-ostree libheif-freeworld (getting unknown command) rpm-ostree install
https://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm rpm-ostree install https://mirrors.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm rpm-ostree update --uninstall rpmfusion-free-release --install rpmfusion-free-release rpm-ostree install libheif-freeworld libheif-tools

For Pop!_OS:

I've added HEIF image decoder in Kodi and tried other things that I don't remember for the file explorer. I've found an application (ImageFan Reloaded if I remember correctly) which can open them, but it's not so user friendly and it's not suitable a family gathering where you wanna watch pictures.

I have an installation of Fedora Workstation 44 and the pictures can be perfectly displayed on this one.

I'd really want to avoid converting all my HEIC pictures to another format as it would be a hassle and the pictures would take more storage space.

If someone could help, it would be nice

Solved: Getting the Flathub version instead of the system version of image viewer solved all my issues. I guess the Fedora and PopOS version are shipping without the codecs for HEIC.

(Solved) Why is Netflix smoother than DVD/Blurays?

Hi everyone!

I have a collection of around 200 movies on DVD/Blurays that I’ve ripped with MakeMKV.

Wether I watch these on my Htpc with Kodi or on my Playstation 5, there are less fluid/smooth than when I watch Netflix on my TV.

As if the movies were 24/25 fps on dics and 60fps on Netflix.

And I have the same motion settings for all sources, but Netflix is still smoother without having too much of a sitcom effect. Am I the only one noticing this and how do they do this? I haven’t found anything on the web about this..

Edit: Solved. It turned out that Wayland wasn’t allowing Kodi to adjust the display refresh rate. Switching to LibreELEC instead of PopOS solved the issue.

It should be written in Kodi’s wiki that Wayland doesn’t allow the refresh rate to be adjusted to the content.

"One or more items failed to play. Check the log for more information about this message". No log and I can still play movies, but only in "videos"

Hi everyone!

I succesfully installed Kodi on an Intel NUC7i3DNK2E running Pop!_OS . All my movies are on an external USB hard drive which automounts on startup.

Everything worked perfectly at the beginning and I managed to succesfully create my movie library.

Once I restarted, I started getting the error "One or more items failed to play. Check the log for more information about this message".

I tried to check the error log, but it's empty.

The weird thing is that I can still play the movies, but only by going into the video section of Kodi and browsing to the file where they are.

I've searched online and I've mostly found people getting that error with cache related stuff. Since I can still play the movies, but not directly from the movie library place, it seems my problem is different and probably related to the fact that the movies are on an external hard drive.

I also wanted to add that I had defined a place for my family pictures and the problem is the same. I can't directly access them through the shortcut I had created, but I can still display them if I use Kodi to browse in the hard drive.

Of course, all of these things also work if I use the OS file explorer, but I'd just want to have the niceties of the library part of Kodi (actors, trailers, covers, etc..).

I hope I was clear enough in my explanation and I'm thankful for any help in advance!

I'm excited about having an impressive digital library with all the blurays/dvds I've bought and ripped over the years!

Advice for Linux media center

Hi everyone!

In the next year or so, my project is to rip all my blurays and put them on a 4tb external USB hard drive. I've already done it for all my DVDs, but I still have to buy an external bluray player in order to finish the job. My budget for the bluray player is CHF 75.- used, so around 75$. All this is done through MakeMKV.

Then, I'd want to have a small Linux PC that I'd use as a media center. My budget is under CHF 100.-, so around 100$. I've noticed that you can get 2014 MacMinis with i5 or i7 for that budget, but I'm open to any other brand.

What I'd want the PC to do: -Play all my movies stored on my external USB drive. I don't think I have 4k movies, but I can't exclude that some of my Blurays will be 4k in the future -Display my family pictures and videos stored on kDrive (a cloud by Infomaniak) through Firefox and WebDav -Play my music on my Yamaha Amplifier through Firefox and Tidal -Use the wifi for updates, browser based stuff, etc..

The PC would probably not be used for anything else for now, but it needs to be able to become a desktop PC again in the future if needed.

I'd want to operate the PC with a bluetooth mouse and only have to use a keyboard from time to time.

I've heard about Jellyfin, Libelec, Kodi and other stuff but I don't really know what they are.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Edit: In the end I got an Intel NUC7i3DNK2E mini pc for CHF 90.- (around 90 dollars) with 8gb of ram/120gb SSD and an Asus BW-12D1S-U for CHF 84.- (around 84 dollars). This combo works great for now and I'm pleasantly surprised.

Same distribution, but different DE. Wifi works in one, but not in the other.

Hi everyone!

I've been enjoying Gnome for the last 5 years, mainly in Fedora Workstation. Lately, I've been feeling a scratch to try something else after a few annoyances with notifications or the file manager.

I've also been using KDE in Steam OS on my Steam Deck, but something doesn't feel right even if I managed to reproduce my Gnome workflow in it.

I thought that Cosmic could be the perfect middle ground and I wanted to dual boot it alongside Fedora Workstation on my second computer, an upgraded Mac Book Pro from 2012. As I enjoy Fedora, I downloaded the Fedora Cosmic Atomic version.

On this computer, you normally have to enable RPM fusion to get the broadcom drivers for the wifi. I followed the instructions related to os-tree based systems with no luck. Then I thought, let's just download the normal Fedora Cosmic as I don't need an immutable distro and the commands should be the same as for Workstation.

Despite, managing to get the Broadcom drivers, I never managed to get the wifi working in Fedora Cosmic.

I might be stupid, but I don't understand why as it's the same distro and just a different DE. Doe's anyone have an explanation?

It might be a sign that I should just live with the minor annoyances I get in Gnome, but some things looked really good in Cosmic and I'd love to dual boot it for a while..

No achievements in Wolfenstein the New Order through Heroic

Hi everyone!

Due to my Playstation 4 version of Wolfenstein the New Order being now only in german after an update, I sold the game and bought it again to replay it on my Steam Deck through Heroic.

I'm enjoying the game as everything works perfectly except that I'm getting no achievements even if my playtime is synchronized to GOG.

Apparently, even on Windows people are having this problem: https://www.gog.com/forum/wolfenstein_series/new_order_achievements_broken/?search=achievements

So in hope of an Idea, I'm turning to Lemmy even if I don't have much hope. Apparently downgrading the version of the game could help, but I can't get a confirmation if it would mean starting from scratch again or not.

I'm running the 1.0.0.2 hotfix version of the game.

Edit: downgrading to 1.0.0.2 through Heroic worked

Kwin workspace rules not working and Evolution not remembering passwords in KDE

Hi everyone!

I'm a 90% satisfied Gnome user only looking for more customization possibilities.

I had tried KDE on a VM, but, since I have a Steam Deck (Steam OS), I thought I should try to fully make it usable as a computer in case I'd need it.

I kind of managed to recreate the Gnome workflow where you switch between workspaces.

I've also set up kwin rules telling, for instance, Firefox to open on workspace No 2 on startup.

I don't know why, but that doesn't work for 2 of my main applications.

I use Evolution mail and it always starts on the wrong workspace. Same for OnlyOffice, but for this one I can't even create a kwin rule as I don't have that option while right clicking on the far right of the app. They're bot installed as Flatpaks.

I wanted to take a screenshot of the issue, but Spectacle doesn't allow me to take a screenshot when the right click menu is open..

Also, Evolution can't seem to remember my passwords despite allowing them to be saved in the keyring. Since I have around 10 calendars, it means entering 10 passwords at startup..

Suffice to say that my experience with KDE isn't great so far even if I'd really want to try it a bit more..

Does anyone knows how to solve these issues?

Thanks in advance!

Edit: In the end, using alt+F3 did the trick in order to apply window rules to OnlyOffice (but not to Evolution) and I switched to Thunderbird for my KDE install in order to avoid the keyring issue

Mass Effect is one of the greatest games ever and EA makes good games

Hi everyone!

I've been replaying the Mass Effect games and I'm really impressed by how great they are.

Someway, even if I really enjoyed them back in the days on my Playstation 3, I feel like it's now even better now that I get to enjoy the Legendary Edition on my Steam Deck.

I think I might have been too young to appreciate all the work that goes into creating such a universe and how you can just spend time by listening to conversations, look at the world around you and get involved in all the politics and news.

I was also surprized at how integrated the DLC's are. The other day I started playing the Omega freeing mission in Mass Effect 3, just to discover after a few hours that it's not part of the main game.

Since I don't remember my first playthrough, it makes me wonder how many of the DLC's I've played for now.

I'm around 20 hours in Mass Effect 3 and I hope the end is as good as I remember (even if I know that some people where not happy with the end). For now, I don't even know if there are many endings, so no spoiler please.

All of this, just to say that you shoud get the game if you haven't played it yet. I got it for around 10$ if I remember, but it'd would even still be worth it at the 69$ they are asking for it these days) I can lower the TDP to 7/ 30 FPS and the game still looks gorgeous on the Deck's small screen.

I feel like it's even better than Cyberpunk 2077 while still filling my need of a huge world with a lot of tech stuff and background stories.

Some people are complaining about the always online requirement, but I think you can even avoid it.

I also wanted to add that EA has a bad reputation on Lemmy (and it's probably justified in a way and not gonna get better soon), but they've created some great games over the years. Here is a list of the ones I've enjoyed just as a reminder:

-Dead Space 1-3 (3 is great despite everything people are saying) -Battlefield 1 -Star Wars Jedi Survivor and fallen order -Need For Speed Shift 1-2

(Solved) Sometimes, my computer is very slow and sometimes really fast. Fedora 43.

Hi everyone!

My daily driver is a Surface Go 1 running Fedora with 8GB of ram and 128GB of storage. It is always hooked up to a Philips 273B screen via USB-C.

Most of the time, it is really fast and a perfect tiny Linux and Gnome machine easily hookable to a big screen for when you're not travelling.

However, sometimes, after installing updates but maybe not always, it is slow as hell. Sometimes, detaching the Surface from the big screen and hooking it again, solves the issue, but not always. It is a behavior I already had when I was using Ubuntu and I've had on Fedora since version 36.

Here are some useful printscreens from HTOP and the ressource management system:

#high cpu usage

#low cpu usage

I thought that maybe installing the Surface kernel would stop the issue, but it didn't..

Sometimes it's annoying enough to make me just want to use my wife's MacBook Pro 2012 running Fedora as a daily driver but the form factor is less practical.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Edit: it happens on startup, even after days of inactivity

Edit2: Thanks everyone for your help! I’ll see if it’s worry investigating more as the problem is more complex to solve than I thought

Edit 3: Apparently the problem was solved by switching to Silverblue after a failed update. I’ve been daily driving it for a month and the issue hasn’t returned

How to get rid of 2 Boxtron errors I get every time I launch the desktop mode?

Hi everyone!

Around a year ago I went through many steps (Boxtron and other stuff) to get Earthworm Jim running on my Steam Deck just to discover afterward that these were not needed in the end.

I think I've uninstalled everything but I can't get rid of two error messages I'm getting every time I switch to desktop mode.

One of them says: Game not recogninzed as DOSBox compatible

The second one says: DOSBox argument error: "unrecognized arguments: -d3d12"

https://github.com/dreamer/boxtron/issues/58 https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/11435

I've found two conversations on github about these, but I have to admit I don't really know what they're talking about and what to do.

I wouldn't want to break my system to solve these errors as these are just minor inconveniences without any influence on functionnality. Could someone guide me on what to do?

Thanks in advance

How can I import GOG offline installers in Heroic while retaining the ability to get achievements?

publication croisée depuis : https://sh.itjust.works/post/52114779

Hi everyone!

Sadly when I'm trying to download games through Heroic, it appears as if the download limit was kind of limited to 0.5 Mbps which is way to slow when you have to download a game like Wolfenstein the New Order which has 40Gb of data.

For now I haven't found a way around this problem so I'm downloading the offline installers from GOG at around 3Mbps (which is way better). The problem is that I can't find a way to import them in Heroic on my Steam Deck.

By the way it's very important for me to retain the ability to get achievements (through Comet) as I'm addicted to these.

Could someone help me about importing these offline installers?

Also, I'll be happy to hear if someone knows a way to improve my download speeds through Heroic and get the ability to keep downloaded files when turning off my Deck as for now I'd have to start everything again if the game hasn't reached 100%?

Thanks in advance for your help!
