Yes there are plenty of open source apps to use, but sometimes closed source is way more polished because the developer makes it their job to create the app. Living isn't free. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

In fact, this defederation is most likely temporary until they either get more moderators, or the other two instances settle down some.

There is no need for an actual installed adblocker. You can simply change system wide DNS to block ads. You can really use any DNS you choose, but I'd suggest mullvads DNS.
