According to Lemmy Users: Blockchain was a grift, AI is a grift, Quantum computing will be a future grift. So according to you what new and emergent technologies are not / will not be a grift?

I'm sure at first I would love it because instead of having to purchase this robot it would be "free" to me.

But after everyone gets used to the clothes robots there would eventually be paid subscription tiers and the next time you open your drawers all your pants have DraftKings ads on the butt.

+1 for stating that the technologies themselves are not the grifts.

LLMs are fantastic tools. Quantum Computing will have meaningful uses.

The grift is the marketing and the dumb C-Suites that fall for it.

To answer your real question though, I need an AI that will actually convert a basket of dirty laundry into a stack of neatly folded clean clothes. That shit will be revolutionary.

Anon goes on a diet

Addicted to alcohol: Stop drinking. You can't control an addiction so you have to completely stop.

Addicted to cigarettes: Stop smoking. You can't control an addiction so you have to completely stop.

Addicted to crack: Stop smoking crack. You can't control an addiction so you have to completely stop.

Addicted to food: Must be your fault for being weak-willed. Just don't consume so much of that thing that you're addicted to. You can control your addiction. Just stop being a loser...

The literal solution to every addiction is stop it, cold turkey. One Day At A Time. But you can't stop eating food.

The only thing you want to see on the website

I would love if most restaurants had pdfs.

Lately it seems almost every restaurant's "menu" button takes you to an online ordering site where you have to pretend like you're ordering to view the menu.

That is very much not what I asked for when I clicked "menu". I clicked menu because I want to see a god damn menu.

Am I the only one watching the Olympics opening ceremonies? Because WTF am I watching?

I've re-watched that Gojira performance like 10 times. The beheaded Marie Antionettes were <chef's kiss>.

I'm getting old and have watched a lot of opening ceremonies with all of this art that they have to explain the meaning to you.

In front of an in-person audience of hundreds of world leaders and live to the entire world, the French chose to depict their final monarch that they deposed and beheaded while playing death metal and opera. That's one of the most badass things I've ever seen. And the announcers didn't have to explain to you how badass it was.

Disagrulement

Yeah, someone said no when a woman asked to touch their penis. Totally realistic.

Yes, you can hold it when I pee. Yes, you can hold it while I'm making sandwiches. Yes, you can hold it while we're on the VelociCoaster at Islands of Adventure...

It's either this or the ozone

This is the second screenshot post today that asked why women used to have big hair and someone snippily "replied" that the hairspray is illegal now, which is objectively false. Only the CFC propellents are illegal. You can still buy a big ass can of AquaNet and spray your hair into the same big crunchy hairdo.

What are the odds of the exact same idea but with different photos and slightly different wording happening organically on the same day?

I'm 50; when I started my career pretty much everyone a little older than me had pensions and I arrived right as the pensions were being phased out. It was a running joke when they would talk about pensions and I would say "what's a pension?"

So my age group will be retiring in 15 years, not 30 years. Almost everyone I know my age has a meager 401k and nothing else.

The streets are going to be flooded with people too old to work and no retirement income in much less than 30 years...
