Can anyone make a community like one would on reddit?
Yep you can, but it probably has to be through the web interface instead of an app. I created ![email protected] myself a few weeks ago, there were no restrictions. It’s literally just the button, then you go through a setup wizard.

Detective show recommendations?
Seconding Broadchurch, it’s incredible. Big Little Lies too. Poker Face arguably counts, with its Columbo-esque “just one more thing” motif. And The Flight Attendant gave me a lot more respect for Kaley Cuoco (of Big Bang Theory fame), though it’s also got some (darkly) comedic elements. Naturally, do a cursory search for all of these before passing them along: I enjoyed them, but idk what your grandparents are like…

Access to Lemmy
iOS user here on lemmy.world - I mainly use Memmy. But because all the apps are still pretty young, I also use Mlem and Liftoff (e.g. right now Memmy errors when I try to post, so I do my posting in Mlem). So far, it seems the most analogous to Apollo, which I had really enjoyed. Btw login issues are weird, like right now I can login on Chrome but not Firefox (mobile, that is: desktop Firefox, my daily driver, is fine)
Edit: just tried Voyager because of this thread and it rocks, may replace Memmy as my main

Thoughts on The Fugitive (1993)?
A+ movie. Also makes me wish I could find the early 2000s TV series. It’s probably not worth revisiting, but I’d still like to try.

Yeah! Interesting how many different approaches there are to metal album art. I don’t see a lot of “abstract art” examples like this one, but it’s really captivating

Wow terrific! I’d thought Vincent taught me never to pass up Don McLean, but then I didn’t know Grave from the same album

I always enjoy that element in their music! It's part of what I keep coming back to Maelstrom for.

I should have known RoS would elicit some opinions, ha. But yeah I know exactly what you mean! I frequently have a similar reaction to some recommended release, where all the members are playing the hell out of their parts, but some stylistic choice just isn’t right for me. Much like for you it’s the balance/fit, I’ll be weirded out by the mix, or an unusual vocal style (see Spite as a deathcore example), or OSDM drums that keep distracting from everything else.
Thanks for chiming in! This makes me curious now, especially since tech death is a less-listened subgenre for you: what are some of your AOTY picks? One of my favorite things about metal communities is getting fresh input from fans with a different perspective than me, I tend to end up with discoveries I wouldn’t have made on my own.

Yeah! That jaunty stylistic switch-up of Don’t Go Out into the Woods Alone was really catchy (and hilarious) too. I also loved how debut Planet Storm did space themes without going full Rings of Saturn aliencore in its sound.

Spire Of Lazarus - Farah (Austria, 2022)
Love this album. For anyone else who's interested, they also put out a couple albums under the old name Dayum (Encyclopaedia Metallum: Spire of Lazarus, Dayum)
