Where they went Tim?

I think it's more of a gaben hate thing, since the epic store can't really make a dent to steams marketshare, even when they straight up give away games.

I have a little bit of schadenfreude at the PS fan club moaning about exclusives, since their whole system is built around exclusives.
But in the end the point stands, exclusives (from anyone) are bad for consumers.

Actually one of the best courses I've taken against this kinda thing was a "Logic" course in the philosophy track in college that had a huge section devoted to how media tries to manipulate a person. Not typical high school stuff but maybe it should be, and fully up to date for social media. There's a practical course for the 21st century.

Major IT outage affecting banks, airlines, media outlets across the world
I'm so exhausted... This is madness. As a Linux user I've busy all day telling people with bricked PCs that Linux is better but there are just so many. It never ends. I think this is outage is going to keep me busy all weekend.

CrowdStrike broke Debian and Rocky Linux months ago, but no one noticed
Companies don't really use Debian or Rocky in widescale production because they have no support.
Now red hat or ubuntu is a different matter.
Honestly though this does point out that this is a pattern of behavior on crowdstrikes part. This should have been the canary in the coalmine.

Republicans are pulling out all the stops to reverse EV adoption
Surely the oil and energy companies have their own investments into renewables. I can't imagine why Rs would die on this hill except for their little culture war.

'Our long-term objective is to make printing a subscription' says HP CEO gunning for 2024's Worst Person of the Year award | Not satisfied with merely bricking printers, HP now wants to own them al...
I don't own a printer because the cost to constantly refill cartrages feels like a subscription already. I just go to the UPS store for the 3 times a year I actually need to print something, on a for-realsies printer that someone else maintains. usually costs less than a dollar every time I go.

Google Is the Only Search Engine That Works on Reddit Now Thanks to AI Deal
Still couldn't get me to use it, I use DDG which can switch between search engines and search sites very quickly with it's ! syntax (Everyone goes on about privacy, but this is pretty much it's best feature). Google results are consistently the worst for me if I'm hitting multiple search engines

What would you like to change about Lemmy culture?
More diversity, More "normies"
Hearing from pooryoungmalegamerleftist#123049781234 saying the same thing as the others isn't thought provoking or constructive. I'd like to see artists, WSB degenerates, football meatheads and everything in between in comments more because like it or not, those people are experts in Something

[Serious] What's your hot take?
Here's one I get a lot of flack for that I don't bring up much
I think people trying to cook up gun control laws are targeting the wrong guns, in going after semi auto or military rifles, when they should be going after cheap handguns that have been available forever. The majority of gun deaths are suicides, and that's almost always done with a hand gun, but even if you control for that the majority of homicides with guns are done with hand guns.
Hand guns are usually relatively cheap. They are very easy to conceal. Its very common for people to walk into a bar with a holstered hand gun and make a series of bad decisions. Its too common for people to get in road rage incidents that escalate into something tragic because of a handgun in the glove box. People leave them around their house and treat them as toys that kids end up finding.
AND I would argue that handguns are not in the spirit of the 2nd amendment. They are not fighting weapons. They are for fun, personal protection, or making people feel tough without having to do any real work. They have little range and lesser power. There are are no troops in the world that deploy with handguns as a primary weapon. US military officers get them but that's more about tradition.
Yes, I'm aware that shooting incidents done with rifles would be more deadly, but the fact there would be much fewer of them at all would be a net benefit in a society that banned or severely restricted hand guns.

There is no such thing as "unskilled labor"
"Retarded" used to be the new sensitive word for what they called a "Moron". He's not a moron he's just "Retarded (slowed)". Now retard is one of the the quickest, cutting insults you can dish out. The word shifted when it got applied to people with metal disabilities.
I guess what I'm saying is, even if we don't called unskilled labor "unskilled labor", lets say we call it "duck jobs" eventually the neutral term "duck jobs" will shift when we apply it to shitty jobs that don't pay well and anyone can do. I used to work a few duck jobs out of school, like loading trucks, but eventually I got back to college and got an internship that lead to a goose job. Now I hope to never do a duck job again.

If Reddit had a soul/conscience, I think it was us, and we're all on Lemmy now...
Reddit is large enough that it's user base is very diverse and niche hobbies can still get a substantial following. From what I can tell, us lemmings are all kinda the same nerdy person who's into Linux and gaming with not enough of us to really make communities for divergent interests.
When I first came in a few people were trying to get /c/bjj going but it just kind of fell off because the middle of a venn diagram of people who are nerdy enough to be here and also into grappling is like me and 6 other people
Still, I peek in here now and again because the shitposts tend to be better.

Why is Facebook filled with so much random junk now?
It's been a long, long time since facebook has been like you are describing.
It's been ads, and old uncle facebook fox news memes for a while. Lately they've been filling it with AI pictures and bot farmed memes. Gotta admit the memes have gotten slightly better, or at least slightly more targeted as of late.
Anyway, my point was, it's been shit for a decade
