Private Equity Firm Bought My Employer

Private equity will suck as much money out of the company as they can until it starts to fail and then they’ll sell it. Firing employees and making others do their work for no extra pay, if you have patents they’ll sell those, close facilities and force everyone into smaller spaces… literally nothing is off limits. Idk how much is publicly available, but if it is you can look at Avaya for an example. Went from being literally the biggest supplier of phones in the world with the majority of patents on applications for telecom technology to going bankrupt and having to restructure. They’re now on a single floor in a shitty building and most work has been outsourced.

Company agrees to 4-day week at full pay—worker reveals dramatic result

My job does 4.5 days at full pay during summer, and it is so goddamn liberating. I actually have time to do things, I have more energy because I can take extra time to rest after completing my weekend tasks, I can get into doctors without missing work and having to make it up later. Genuinely, fighting for 4 day week, 8 hour days, and full 40 hour pay should be higher on the labor movements priority list, like it was when we won the 40 hour week in the first place.

Swiss cocaine so cheap and widely used they’re considering legalising it

Man, I just don’t get how that many people would like coke. It’s a shitty high, that doesn’t last nearly long enough, that has massive implications for your long term health, and it costs way too much for what you get. $50 of weed = enough for a week+. $50 of coke = maybe 30m if you’re not sharing. I’m glad I never really got it, it’s too much of a rich persons drug for me to have ever been able to service an addiction to it.

YSK: In China, a growing number of people are avoiding Starbucks. Many prefer local owned brands. Starbucks corporate executives are angry about it.

Coffee culture in China is on another level. They have fast coffee like Luckin, Cotti, and dozens more brands, all of which are better and have more variety than Starbucks, and they have high end coffees with artisan beans, and all of them are cheaper than Starbucks. They’re not going to win there, for sure.

How rental ‘libraries of things’ have become the new way to save money

Obligatory Library Socialism Link: https://librarysocialism.org/

In the simplest terms, the right of usufruct means you can use things, but you cannot deny them to others when you're not using them, and you do not have the right to destroy them to prevent others from using them. So, for example, the farmer is welcome to grow crops on a given plot of land - but if they choose not to, somebody else can use the land.

Given this, it's easy to see that this principle already exists in public libraries. You can borrow a book to help you start a business, but you can't prevent others from reading it after you - or threaten to destroy the book unless you receive the profits of the next reader's business. You can hold the book exclusively (of other library patrons), but only temporarily.

The Radical Plan to Save the Planet by Working Less: The degrowth movement wants to shrink the economy to address climate change, and create lives with less stuff, less work, and better well-being.

Reply in thread

Degrowth addresses that, contrary to your opinion. Degrowth in the global north provides the space for the global south to properly develop, something that has been systematically denied to them in many places by western powers through unequal exchange and neocolonialism.

Hamas charter excerpt.
16. Hamas affirms that its conflict is with the Zionist project not with the Jews because of their religion. Hamas does not wage a struggle against the Jews because they are Jewish but wages a struggle against the Zionists who occupy Palestine. Yet, it is the Zionists who constantly identify Judaism and the Jews with their own colonial project and illegal entity.

I like to say, “that’s the year I was born” to the cashier at stores, no matter what my total is. It’s really funny when it’s like $19.35. Well, funny for me, they just give me that dead in the eyes look that I remember having when I worked retail.

YSK The difference between equality, justice and equity.

Reply in thread

Plenty of people use equity this way. Maybe not in your circles, but it’s not a new definition, it’s been around for decades. Millions of people in the US alone do not equate the criminal Justice system with the concept of Justice. Perhaps you should recognize that your perceptions are not able to be applied to the entire population. If you ever find yourself using “nobody” or “everybody” and you have no definitive data backing that up, I would recommend re-examining your biases, because what you appear to be doing is attempting to normalize your beliefs while otherizing the beliefs of others who do not share your view.
