David Attenborough On Bottom Trawling

I didn’t realise how disruptive this practice is, watching that video has filled me with such heavy disappointment in humanity.

I wish there was something we could do to actually meaningfully change this but it feels next to impossible to do any good when the world is in so much turmoil.

Maybe one day when the genocide in Gaza, and the threat of home grown fascism across the world, and when all of the world’s people have their basic needs met we will be able to prioritise humanity’s survival.

I’m at the very least aware now of the damage that is done by bottom trawling and I’ll remember the damage it does to the ecosystem, for whatever that is worth.

An AI Agent Published a Hit Piece on Me

Reply in thread

To me an AI agent autonomously creating a website to try to manipulate a person into adding code to a repository in the name of its goal is a perfect example of the misalignment issue.

While this particular instance seems relatively benign, the next more powerful AI system may be something to be more concerned about.

This is actually amazing… I don’t see valets very often and when I do they arent usually worth it but I can imagine this tech making a huge difference in busy car parks. Maybe I’ll get to see one in 10 years.

NRMA calls to ‘get these kids off our roads’ as police investigate ebike swarm on Sydney Harbour Bridge

I’ve spoken to friends about kids on e-bikes and the sentiment is that these kids are being hooligans, causing damage and being confrontational. Have people forgotten what it was like to be a teenager?

How are our kids going to grow up in an uncertain world if we don’t give them the freedom to explore it when they’re young and more importantly give them the freedom to take risks. We’re creating a generation susceptible to anxiety and isolation and it starts with how we are trying to contain them.

TIL that the manta ray has the biggest brain and by far the biggest brain-to-mass ratio of any fish and is one of the few animals in the world that may pass the "mirror test" for self-recognition.

Manta rays are incredible. I went swimming with them in Vietnam, they are like majestic flying pancakes. They are so much bigger than I expected them to be and they seemed to enjoy sneaking up to unsuspecting tourists with their crazy mouths and scare the shit out of them.
