How do I get rid of this stupid freaking thing?

Reply in thread

I dunno. So far I have always found what I needed, assuming it existed. Sometimes there just isn’t a match because either it’s not a setting, or it doesn’t contain the exact text you entered. I’d imagine people’s experiences differ, but I’ve been lucky thus far, on many devices.

Yeah, I mean, someone has to provide the information. If one day, there’s a full bridge, and the next day it’s deconstructed for repairs, Google can’t magically know; some information needs to be pushed out to be parsed and updated. It wouldn’t surprise me if this was simply done by construction co. without proper filing etc. very few nations have the extreme regulations that U.S. has - it's one of America’s redeeming qualities. Of course, that may not always be the case. But yknow.

The days of custom Android ROMs are numbered, and Google is to blame

If the day comes where it’s impossible to at the very least, clean off spyware stuff you don’t want, or install custom ROMs if necessary, then I’ll stick to older units that have the ability still. And if that ever becomes impossible, then stop using a smartphone.

And all the arguments in the world about how everything requires a smartphone - I don’t care about. That cannot be literally required, at least not for anything important because it’s not possible to assume/ensure that every person has one and that it is fully operational etc.

If this creates a nuisance for providers of various services, so be it - in fact, all the better because they can potentially be a source of pressure to maintain the availability of customizable devices. But that’s a very very miniscule likelihood; more likely is that they say well, too bad, if you don’t have a smartphone then this hospital can’t treat you. There may come a point where it literally will be impossible to functionally integrate in society without being spied upon 24/7. And in America at least, this will be welcomed with open arms because - well, you know: sheep.

But even then, there will develop a bigger and bigger fringe subculture of off-the-grid individuals who still value the concept of privacy.

So - like every sci-fi dystopia depicted in film and literature throughout history. Well, anyone who complains won’t be able to claim they weren’t warned a million times literally.

Linus Torvalds says AI-powered bug hunters have made Linux security mailing list ‘almost entirely unmanageable’

Reply in thread

I know you were just being glib, but I feel compelled to point out that given its context, it was only used as one might say "AI is all well and good, but...", like just using it to get to the real point, which is that in-and-of itself, without a person acting upon the AI's results, it is actually not great at all. Like any tool, it has to be used to help you accomplish something and not just set about to do your entire job for you. So he was actually saying the opposite.

Do you dislike HR in workplaces?

It was once upon a time, called Personnel. It was Personnel since its inception, but then one day, some monsters decided that title had the word “person” in it, and, heh, well… ah, we can’t have employees thinking they are people; they need to know that they are no different from a table, a copy machine or a forklift. So some genius of corporate sadism came up with the term Human Resources, to perfectly articulate the fact that to the corporation, you are simply a resource that is classified as human. That should put an end to all this distracting and unproductive “dignity.”
