What are the First Principles of investing/personal finance?

Buy low, sell high is applicable to trading securities which is only a minor part overall of personal finance.

Personal finance in its whole is a system for managing the flow of one’s money in an optimized way which both minimizes losses to taxes and interest while maximizing ROI.

A great starting resource is the Bogleheads wiki: https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Getting_started

They provide general flows to managing personal finances.

Family

Lean into this and always have a lengthy, detailed presentation ready to go at the drop of a hat. Just an absolute knowledge vomit.

They’ll do this once and never again.

It's funny when you tell them these things when they grow up

Worked at a business which offered reduced pricing for kids. Front desk was trained in the habit of asking, not how old the kids were (because parents had trained them to give the age under the pricing shelf), but “what grade are you in this year”?

Not having prepared for that particular question, the kids would always answer honestly, and we could derive their age and charge accordingly.

Inner Peace [SMBC]

Some quick math on what this looks like:

Assume $70k median income, this means passive income would need to be $140k. In order to get $140k/yr one would need $4M to draw down at 3.5%/yr and meet that goal.

To get to $4M, using the following assumptions: 20% savings rate (not accounting for inflation, raises, bonuses, etc) per year and a 10%ROR on the index funds would take a little more than 35y.

It takes a substantial amount of discipline to do this. If one could make $70k/y starting the year they turn 18, it could be done by the time they’re 53.

What can I do daily to improve my on-the-spot cognitive abilities?

Exposure and repetition through low stakes practice.

When you are out and about, think about what you would do if x happened to y at the moment you’re there. Standing in line behind an older person and suddenly they collapse? Be observant and notice if they seemed stressed, swaying, or uneven on their feet; be ready to slow their fall—place them into the recovery position and point to someone and say “YOU, call [emergency service number]”.

There are many aspects and many levels of preparedness. Decide up front to what extent you will be involved.
