[What if] Spoiler SG-1 season 4 episode 5

::: spoiler spoiler
Every time I watch this episode, I feel that Martouf's death was premature. 💔 Not in the sense that he was the victim of Goa'uld brainwashing, obviously, but in the sense that he could've played a bigger role going forward, with his strong connections to Carter/Jolinar and all. I can't stop fantasizing about how he could've contributed in the war with Anubis, for instance. And while O'Neill's and Carter's forbidden love obviously has higher priority in the writing as it is, I would've loved to see Martuof and Carter hit it off. 🥰

SGU-esque SG-1 and SGA

Started rewatching SG-1 for the... I've lost count, but it's definitely more than five. Anyway, watching some of the "innocent" early episodes, such as when

I wish they could remake the whole series in the same dark, gritty, sweaty, bloody, somber, docu style like SGU. 😊

Just Finished SG-1

Since Atlantis started, I have been watching both series by following the watch guide on the gateworld website.

While seasons 9 and 10 of SG-1 were OK, they were not nearly as interesting as Atlanis was, so I found myself looking forward to finishing SG-1.

Now, that it is over, I am a bit relieved and in future rewatches, I will likely skip seasons 9 and 10.

Atlantis has been great the whole way though. I really like the cast, but I just saw that Weir was replaced and I am surprised about that decision as I thought she played that role really well.

I am still early in season 4 of Atlantis, but I will likely get through it quickly as I put the show on any chance I get.

I did watch the ark of truth movie and did not like that at all. I look forward to the next movie, which I believe I am supposed to watch at the end of season 4 of Atlantis.

Ancient Egyptian myths in Stargate

I have been reading some books about ancient Egypt for a project of mine and I came across some stuff that I found interesting. I think we all know that Stargate borrowed the names of gods for the Goa'ulds. What I didn't know was that they also borrowed some more mythology. I'll be honest, I thought that apart from very basic facts about the "gods" they mostly made this stuff up. So I thought maybe some of you would also find this interesting.

In the movie and also later in the series the topic of the rebellion against Ra comes up. This is an actual ancient Egyptian myth: A long time ago the gods used to live with the humans on earth and the sun god Ra lived among them as their king. However as Ra aged, his power became weaker. This led to the humans mocking him and defying his orders. They refused to pray to him. In anger Ra sent his daughter Hathor (goddess of love) who became Sekhmet (goddess of destruction). Sekhmet began slaughtering all humans. Ra then regretted what he had done, because he had realised that if all humans were killed there would be no one left to pray to him. He prepared beer colored red to look like blood. Sekhmet drank it all and fell asleep, thus humanity was saved. Ra forgave the humans for their betrayal but still decided to ascend to the heavens and rule from there.

I also found it interesting that doorways have an important role in Egyptian mythology. False doors were painted on the walls of tombs and were thought to be a connection to the world of the dead. Obviously they weren't round, but the idea of building doors to other worlds (the world of the dead, mostly) is prominent in ancient Egyptian culture.

In one episode the eye of Ra is introduced as a powerful weapon. In mythology Ra created humans from his tears. His eye was the embodiment of his power. In some version of the rebellion myth Sekhmet is said to act as "the eye of Ra" when she almost destroyed humanity.

And lastly this is not a myth, but Abydos is the name of a city in Egypt, where some of the oldest temples and objects connected to ancient Egyptian religions were found.

These are just some small fun facts I stumbled upon. Also, there are so many more fun Gods and myths in ancient Egyptian mythology. I understand that the series could not possibly integrate them all, but it would be a lot of fun to have them pop up e.g. in spin-offs. Like Anat, the Goddess of war and sister of Baal, who defended the Pharaoh in battle. She could be a Goa'uld who is a scientist and developed a lot of the weapon technology. Maybe she invented the Zats.

Finally Made it to Atlantis

I have really fallen in love with Stargate and I have been watching over an episode per day on average for the past few months.

I recently made it to Atlantis and Season 8 of SG1. To be honest, I was a little worried that I would not be able to enjoy it due to casting or whatever.

I'm happy to say that I love it about as much as I love SG1.

In fact, I am already on season 2 of Atlantis and season 9 of sg1. And... so far, I have some problems with season 9.

First of all... Jack O'Neill! I understand he was done with the show, but there was no send off for him. It was just so sudden. I did read about it and saw that Carter will return, so that is great.

But, the new alien girl... I hate it.

Not the actress or anything, but I hate when shows introduce these overly sexualized girls. I feel the same way about fan service in anime. I hope she goes away or stops being so horny about everything.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention that I love that they brought in Rodney to be the scientists for Atlantis. He was fun to watch in sg1 and I am happy that this role was given to him.

I'm also watching in the order on gateworld, and it was really worth it due to how the stories run concurrently. Like the episode where the energy beings take them back and Hammond is the general, when we know that O'Neill was promoted. So, we have a hint right away that something is off.

Been watching Stargate universe for the first time...

It's not my type of hair why I never watched it tell now. It's. Not that good. At least for me. But I wanted to watch it at least once all the way through.

This is one of the very few shows that have actual proper lesbian relationship and representation I have seen. No weird fetishizing of it or infantilization just two women who love each other. I really appreciate that for the show.

Update First Time Watching Stargate SG-1[Finished Season 4 and 5]

I planned to update after each season, but life gets busy and before you know it, you've finished two more seasons of SG-1.

I've continued to really love this series and I don't think there were any episode I would consider bad form these seasons. This show has been really strong.

Instead of writing my thoughts on each episode, I will pick out the notable ones to me.

Season 4

  • Episode 2 - Breeders: I think this is the one where the people they were about to trade with were actually racists. I liked this one overall and was happy to see Earth stuck by its morals and that Daniel kept persisting that Earth should learn more before helping.

  • Episode 6 - Time Loop: OK, so this might be my favorite episode. It was really funny. I love how O'Neill kept giving bad examples and how Teal'c kept getting hit during his reset. It was also funny to see that they took a break at some point and just chilled around the base.

  • Episode 7 - Watergate: This was a really fun episode. It had X-Files vibes and my wife, a Trekie, was listening in and she liked it too.

  • Episode 11 - Point of no return: This had an interesting twist. My wife was actually rewatching Sex and the City around this time, so it was cool to show her the guest actor. I like seeing him pop-up in another episode later.

  • Episode 13 - The Curse: This is another X-Files feeling episode. I did not expect the twist at the end either. I plan to show this one to my wife along with "Time Loop".

Season 5

  • Episode 5 - The Fifth Man: I figured the extra person was some sort of alien and the stakes of this one did not seem too high. I was enjoyable, but I think it would have been more interesting if the extra person wasn't so in need of help while "off world".

  • Episode 13 - Proving Grounds: I really like this. The while time, I kind of suspected it was all part of the training, but I was not sure until it was revealed. It was a fun episode to watch.

  • Episode 19 - Menace: I did not expect the girl to turn against them at the end of the episode and I did not expect her to be the mother of the replicators. I expect we will see more of her later.

  • Episode 21 - Meridian: OK, well this episode sucked for obvious reasons. He was one of my favorite characters. I stumbled over a spoiler and knew he was leaving the show at some point, but the characters all had such great chemistry together and he was written really well and had good humor. I am happy that his "death" was an honorable one at least and not pointless.

Still sad to see him go, but as a spoiler, I have liked his replacement so far. I am happy they didn't recast him and I am happy that the person who replaced him wasn't written to have the same exact skill set. Although, knowing he would leave the show, I expected the person who would replace him was the archaeologist they took from the planet that captured them in season 3.

I'm already about halfway through season 6 and will try to do another update soon.

Please no spoilers.
